Ethereum Layer 2 is on FIRE!

In the wake of Ethereum’s network congestion and sky-rocketing transaction fees, technologies around layer 2 solutions have matured dramatically in the past year. Today, we’re seeing a meteoric rise in Ethereum layer 2 activity, as many leading DeFi protocols are now choosing to build on or port contracts to several thriving Layer 2 ecosystems.

What is Layer 2?
The term “layer 2” or “L2” collectively describes a number of solutions (rollups, validium, plasma, state channels, etc.) that help decentralized applications scale by taking transactions off-chain. They are conceptually built on top of Ethereum, hence the name. Despite the congestion on the Ethereum network, layer 2 solutions allow users of any Ethereum application to enjoy near-instant and affordable transactions for a tiny fraction of the gas cost while still leveraging the robust security and decentralization of the Ethereum mainnet.

Top DeFi Protocols Are Leading the Way
DeFi 1.0 has shown its potential to transform global finance. However, Ethereum network congestion and high gas fees are still pricing many out of usage. Now that DeFi has established a firm foothold, we’re seeing some of the most well-known protocols rushing to implement layer 2 solutions to ease the burden and barrier to entry for users.

  • Aave, a non-custodial liquidity protocol for earning interest on deposits and borrowing assets. It launched on Polygon last month as part of a wider plan to make DeFi products more accessible to all and rapidly grew to over $1 billion worth of liquidity in just 10 days.

  • 1inch, a platform that aims to find the best deals across multiple decentralized exchanges (DEXs), just announced its expansion to Polygon. It joins Aave as arguably the most notable DeFi dapps to integrate with layer 2. The move provides 1inch users access to several Polygon-based liquidity sources that already include Curve, SushiSwap, QuickSwap, Aave.

  • dYdX is a leading DeFi platform for margin and perpetual trading. To significantly scale trading, dYdX and StarkWare have built a Layer 2 protocol for cross-margined Perpetuals, based on StarkWare’s StarkEx scalability engine (Layer 2) and dYdX’s Perpetual smart contracts. dYdX users can now trade with zero gas costs, lower trading fees, and reduced minimum trade sizes.

The List Goes On
Additional projects include Chainlink, Sushiswap, Open Sea, Curve Finance, Graph, Polywhale, Decentraland, SuperFarm, Pooltogether, with many more on their way.

L2 Network Effect is Heating Up
As the technology continues to mature and the need to take Ethereum transactions off-chain grows, the growth of layer 2 ecosystems is getting interesting. Due to the recent surge in L2 activity, there is a significant network effect that provides even more incentive for DeFi protocols to integrate. Currently, it’s Polygon that boasts the most established and fastest-growing network. Since October 2020, the total value locked on Polygon has risen from under $5 million to $5.8 billion at the time of this writing. In comparison, xDAI’s TVL is currently around $71 million.

Hottest Upcoming Projects Are Building on L2
While many projects on Ethereum are migrating to layer 2 after initially building on layer 1, some of the most anticipated projects of 2021 are choosing to build there from the start. One example is Scaleswap, an upcoming IDO launchpad that is in partnership with Polygon. Scaleswap is leveraging layer 2 scaling and a state-of-the-art UX to improve the IDO experience, making it accessible and fair to all.

IDO launchpads have fully revolutionized crypto investing and fundraising ever since the rise of Polkastarter in late 2020. However, as with many early DeFi protocols, the current platforms haven’t been able to provide truly open access due to high gas costs and less than ideal selection criteria for deciding participation in launch pools. Layer 2 scaling and a community-centric approach are helping Scaleswap tackle both of these pain points head-on.

Ethereum 2.0 on the Horizon
The big question on everyone’s minds is whether the layer 2 space will still be relevant once Ethereum 2.0 arrives. Ethereum 2.0 has multiple layers, and not all are being immediately deployed. One aspect, the PoS merge, is scheduled to go live later this year but is just the first of five major concepts that make up the future of Ethereum. The big throughput upgrade is sharding, and that will not happen until 2022 or 2023. Sharding itself will be deployed in stages and could take additional time beyond that to fully roll out.

The bottom line? No amount of Ethereum 2.0 scaling will ever be enough to meet demand. Users will always want the network to be cheaper and faster. Vitalik Buterin, in response to whether L2 scaling solutions will still be relevant upon the release of ETH 2.0, stated:

Quote
Fully off-chain L2s based on channels and Plasma will continue to be relevant … an ecosystem where Ethereum covers the world could easily have a need for even more, especially for micropayment-oriented applications. TLDR: the "layer 2" space is about to get a lot more interesting.

There won’t be a battle between Ethereum 2.0 and Layer 2 solutions. Instead, the two will work together synergistically. Ethereum is and always will be the main highway. Layer 2 provides the surrounding roads, bridges, on-ramps, and additional infrastructure necessary to grow Ethereum into a robust and globally scaled network. The Ethereum Layer 2 ecosystem is thriving, and it’s only just getting started.

Quick question... When we mine at a pool that says x% is donated to the coin we are mining... does that go towards the exchange race or is that a separate fund?

stocks.exhange update... They finally processed my deposit. I was able to buy btcz and withdraw without any issues. However, I would never use them again because you will never be able to speak to someone if something does go wrong. They don't respond to support tickets or twitter.

Can someone explain to me why the donation numbers go down at the exchange race? (https://hodler95.github.io/exchangesrace/) I've been checking this 5 times a day and I see the total amount of donated BTC go down after a few hours. Are these funds being used for other purposes?

Edit* False alarm... It looks like keeping a tab open in my browser and refreshing it is bringing up previous data. I cleared cache and revisited the page and the numbers were back up.

I was selling some stuff on Craigslist this weekend. They have a checkbox to let buyers know you accept crypto currency. I started offering buyers a discount if they pay in BitcoinZ. It motivated me to start selling more stuff I had laying around the basement and it gives me the opportunity to give 5-10 people a day an elevator pitch on BTCZ. To the top one person at a time!

I'd feel better about this when there are easier and more secure ways to buy BTCZ, considering it looks like stocks.exchange just took 95 dollars from me. But its a solid way to spread the word for now.

I still haven't received any assistance with stocks.exchange. My money is still not in my account. However, I did the same transaction with tradesatoshi. I was able to get my money in, buy BTCZ and get it withdrawn in about 20 minutes. That was about as easy as it gets.

Any good news news from Bitcoinz Devs? Some good ones would be nice to us, any information?

Coinomi Update

We would like to oficially announce to the community that BTCZ will be incorporated to the Coinomi Wallet.

After negotiation rounds with Coinomi team, this community quickly Voted and Approved the raise of funds to close this deal.

We had great help from Cryptorex, managing the donation funds/conversion/transfer to Coinomi. (Great and Brave Support! Thanks a lot Cryptorex! You just acted fast and with perfect timing!)

Also great help from "hodler95" who set up the webpage where we all could follow the evolution of fund raising in real time (That was awesome! Thanks a lot!).   Link:   http://btcz.altervista.org/coinomi.html

Coinomi already included BTCZ in its Beta version. And we already tested transfer features from that wallet, interaction directly with the Coinomi team.

So, for their next update, BTCZ will be there, and that is huge for us in many ways.

- Coinomi has great capillarity and usually is a great tool for people beginning to touch the crypto world, specially if they are willing to hold many coins at the same place.

- Currently available for Android, Inclusion to App Store is coming soon (just check their web site: https://coinomi.com )

- Soon, holding BTCZ in Iphones will be available.

- This will bring us an extra option for wallets, and making our network more user friendly, stable and safe.

- Coinomi is also working in a desktop wallet for Windows, Linux and Mac. And we will be there. Bringing large exposure and visibility to our BTCZ community project.

From my side, I have to say a big thanks to the whole community. I am truly enjoying to be directly involved in this project; It was a pleasure and great lesson to negotiate this deal with Coinomi, from the beginning to the end.

Visiting many other communities, I find this one really unique and special. People here are moving. And when needed, they move tempestuously fast!

Thanks a lot!!

llbrunoll

Great news! Great Job!

On a sour note. I transfered $95 dollars of ETH to stocks.exchange to buy BTCZ and after 12 hours the money is still not in my account. They haven't answered my support ticket yet either. Is anyone else having an issue with them right now?

I saw mentions of BTCZ needing Youtube videos for exposure/marketing. I make pretty good explainer videos. Here is a sample... https://vimeo.com/122895461

I wrote the script and did the animation for that. The voiceover was done by me as well but we would also have the option of hiring a professional voice-over artist.

Can I ask what's the logic behind preferring BTC-Alpha + OpenLedger + Coinexchange.io over Cryptopia?
I think Cryptopia would give more exposure even if it's just a single exchange, specially since lately people have started to understand that the place is an incubator of lowcap coins that can boom and become very relevant.

Well... On the other side if I can be selfish for a moment I'm fine with the coin not reaching Cryptopia (yet) so I can keep accumulating, but I still think it's an important milestone the community should try to aim for.

Hello,
First of all thanks for asking before making any asumptions.
This is a ‘Race’, so basically donators can decide the exchange.

As i donated more than 10k BTCZ for the three exchanges I can tell you my reasons, I don’t know others reason for their chosen option. BTCZ is about decentralization. Decentralization means that if one piece falls the coin will not suffer. So i choose 3 exchanges instead of one because I think that we need to have a backup if one exchange closes or has technical issues. Right now we have 3 exchanges and we all know that those are not the best. Another 3 means that we have more chances to ALWAYS be available for investors. Those 3 in the race might have their own issues, but i want BTCZ on more exchanges before hitting a big one, that way we can be sure that one exchange does not dictate the price.

Also I heard of pump & dump scheme. Most of these schemes take place on coins that are listed only on cryptopia. Because the price can be easily manipulated by whales.

Another reason is that i support Decentralized exchanges, OpenLedger is one of them. I think those are the future when people will realize that on DEXs they have the coins, bot some storage on a server.

At the end: i think we should go for another 2-3 small exchanges besides those 3 from Exchange Race before going big. We need volume and price direction from 10 small ones so we assure that big ones do not affect us.

This is just my humble opinion, and the reason I vore for those... at the moment. This coin is young, we need organic grow.

I've been wondering the same. Thanks for the explanation. I am more an more impressed by the community behind this coin every day. I just switched to mining BTCZ 24/7.

How do I get awesome miner to start mining automatically after a system reboot? My computer rebooted in the middle of the night last night. AM opened up after the reboot but it did not start mining.

Will this work?

I set up a rule: Trigger: detect offline, 20 seconds Actions: start miner

I think the Zotac cooling thing was that the mini's don't advertise ball bearing fans.  I'm not sure about the amp extremes.  I'm sure you can figure that out though.

I have 12 EVGA 1070ti FTW2 split between two rigs.  So far as good on them.  I hear good things about them, but they've only been running for a couple of weeks, so I don't have any personal long term experience with them.

I heard good things about those ftw2 models. I think Vosk used those and was really happy with the performance. Are you mining equihash? How are they performing?

I also have 7 zotac 1070ti amp extreme's being delivered next week. I thought I loved everything about this card but I really dislike the dual 8 pin power input. Philipma help me figure out a solution to that problem but I'm also starting to hear the cooling system on the Zotac cards is not great. It is a giant card with a huge heatsink so I thought cooling was a priority for them. I am starting to regret this purchase.

I have a friend that is offering to buy the Zotac amp extremes from me. Would I be better off selling them and going with another evga 1070ti hybrid rig? I've also had my eye on the Asus rog strix 1070ti. Who makes the best non-hybrid cooling systems?

I have evga 1070 ti hybrids that I am setting up this weekend. Everything I hear about them is fantastic. The only downside to them is cost and they use a little more electricity than other 1070 ti's.

I need a rock solid card for my next build. Any suggestions on a brand?

I am planning my next build and I wanted to do things a little different this time. I've made a few mistakes with the planning of my last 2 builds. I found ways to make them work with the help of the community here... but I think it will be much easier to get advice before I spend my money.

5k budget
Mining performance is obviously important to me but I prefer reliability and longevity over anything else.
Located in the United States: 0.12 eclectricty costs

I have the most trouble selecting a good GPU. Which is your favorite?
