Re: Cryptocurrency in Nigeria: From ban to taxation

On the eve of his departure from office on May 28, former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari signed the Finance Act, 2023, into law. The act introduces a series of tax reforms aimed at modernizing the country’s fiscal framework. Among its provisions was the introduction of a 10% tax on gains from the disposal of digital assets, including cryptocurrencies.
In early 2021, CBN sent a memo to all commercial banks in the country to block the accounts of persons or establishments involved in crypto activities but with this bill passed into law it seems that the CBN ban of cryptocurrency is no longer effective since the government now wants a 10% taxation fee from the gain in cypto usage.

In many cases, governments do require the cooperation of crypto exchanges operating within their jurisdiction to track users’ capital gains. By working with exchanges, authorities can access transaction data and identify individuals or entities for tax purposes. However, the level of cooperation and specific regulations vary from country to country. Some jurisdictions have implemented stricter requirements for exchanges to report user information, while others may have limited regulations or are in the process of developing them.
Nigerian government can be successful with the new taxation law by having crypto platforms that are registered and operating in the country like Remitano, Luno, Roqqu, Bitmama, NairaEx etc. pay for their taxes but...Is this tax also applied to individuals using or trading cryptocurrency in these platforms? If yes... Do you think they will have any luck in taxing individuals using this platforms since we've not really had good results in collecting taxes from physical businesses? Also, most of these crypto merchants charges high transaction fees already and with the new law in place, can these platforms include a tax fee for every transactions without most users noticing?

Share your thoughts.

When you are in a confused country where people don't know what they really want. They keep on making up and down decisions; in the first instance, there was no tangible reason for them to ban cryptocurrency, just because the young population was gaining financial independence from the government through cryptocurrency.

Re: Subsidy removal and all you need to know
by

on 12/06/2023, 12:11:29 UTC
I greet una my fellow 9ja people with maximum respect. No be new thing again say the new administration of PBAT don announced the removal of subsidy and the thing dey cause noise everywhere sortey NLC wan embark on strike. The matter long but make I cut am short and tell una something wey we need to know about the whole issue as explained by the NNPC for their verify Twitter handle link.
why price increase wey June never end?
From the report, we hear say former president Buhari signed till June 30th to cover for the subsidy but that date never reach and the price Don sky rocket reach #500 and above. Wetin cause am? NNPC say since 2022 govt no drop money for the subsidy and govt dey owe them 2.8trl reach this moment, na dem dey use their money to supply the fuel na why dem increase the price now make scarcity no con dey.
why selling old fuel with new price?
Normally na so business be. If you hear about the increment of price for market you no need to allow your former product finish before you increase your price too. Why is it like that? If you no increase the price and you wan wait for your former product to finish that means you no go see new product buy again since the price don increase for market and your money no go reach again.
why NNPC dey fix price?
NNPC say e no dey fix price for anybody. Na you wey dey sell your market go determine your own price depending on how you sef see am buy  Grin no believe anyone wey tell you say na NNPC dey fix fuel price for sellers.
na like this we go dey buy fuel at higher price dey go?
No! This price hike no go continue like this dey go. E go dey change as people are buying and the sellers too go soon dey reduce the price in order to attract more customers to their side. The problem here be say we dey easily adapt to things for this country  Angry
how Dangote, NNPC and other refineries fit help the matter?
Plenty things go take place if dangote refinary begin dey work now and more extra better things if govt own refineries are revive also. Fuel go choke everywhere plenty if we start the refining for ourselves, work go dey for our youths and our GDP go begin smoke to high like kilode 😂

The above contents was culled from the image share by NNPC in the Twitter link provided above in this post with a little modification for better and to aid understanding more easily.
Removing subsidies was a good move, although there was no time when the country was paying for subsidies. You shouldn't create more problems when you are trying to solve one. Mr. President should have put measures in place before making such announcements. People are really suffering.

Africans truly gain independence from the West?
by
Sharonchy
on 29/05/2023, 06:04:28 UTC
African countries have gained political independence from their former colonial powers, but the legacy of colonialism still shapes many aspects of their societies and economies. While many African countries have made progress in terms of economic development, poverty reduction, and political stability, they still face significant challenges in fully realizing their potential.

One of the ongoing legacies of colonialism is economic dependence on former colonial powers and other developed nations. Many African countries continue to rely on exports of raw materials and commodities, which leaves them vulnerable to fluctuations in global commodity prices. In addition, many African countries still face significant debt burdens, which limit their ability to invest in infrastructure and social programs.

Another legacy of colonialism is the persistence of political instability and conflict in many African countries. This frequently has something to do with the arbitrary lines drawn by colonial powers, which split ethnic groups and led to conflicts that still exist today. In addition, many African countries have struggled to establish democratic governance systems that are free from corruption and political repression.

Finally, the legacy of colonialism has contributed to ongoing struggles for racial justice and equality, both within African countries and in the broader international community. Many African countries continue to face discrimination and marginalization on the global stage, and the ongoing legacy of colonialism has contributed to ongoing struggles for social and economic justice.

Re: The hypocrisy of the Western world to Africans
by
Sharonchy
on 29/05/2023, 05:27:52 UTC
The relationship between Africa and the Western world has been complex and controversial, and accusations of hypocrisy are not uncommon. Some argue that the Western world has historically exploited Africa's resources and people, while claiming to promote democracy, human rights, and development.

One example of this is the legacy of colonialism, which left many African countries with a legacy of economic and political instability. Despite the end of formal colonization, some argue that Western countries have continued to exert influence over African nations through economic policies, aid, and military intervention.

Critics also argue that Western countries have often turned a blind eye to human rights abuses committed by African leaders who are seen as strategic allies. At the same time, Western countries have been quick to condemn human rights abuses in African countries that are not seen as strategic partners.

That's are your thoughts?
I don't dispute your claims @OP but am tired of seeing Africans continue blaming Europeans for their misfortune. The main problem in Africa are Africans. European nations might be exploiting Africa but we have failed to maximize the resources or finance at our disposal. African leaders and even citizens are good wasters. We want to own many houses, buy many cars, and live a flamboyant life by stealing from our fellow countrymen. This money would have been used to provide basic infrastructure to develop the continent.

If you are a government official and refuse to steal to become rich, you will be seen as a stupid man but corrupt officials are given national awards and celebrated by the public because corruption is now acceptable in our society. Europeans cannot steal from Africa without the help or collaboration of Africans. Other continents were also colonized but they have developed more than African counties because they want change. Let Africans stop pointing at the Europeans as the architect of their misery because Africans are the true enemies of Africa. Please these are my thoughts.

There are certainly examples of hypocrisy on the part of Western countries towards Africa, particularly when it comes to issues of economic exploitation and human rights abuses. For example, many Western countries have historically supported authoritarian regimes in Africa that were responsible for serious human rights violations, all in the name of maintaining political and economic stability in the region.

Additionally, Western countries have often been accused of exploiting African resources, such as minerals and oil, without providing fair compensation or investing in local communities. This has led to a situation where African countries are often left with little control over their own resources and are unable to fully benefit from them.

Furthermore, Western countries have been criticized for imposing unfair trade policies on African countries, which have made it difficult for African businesses to compete on a global scale. This has had a negative impact on the economies of many African countries, leading to poverty, unemployment, and other social problems.

The effects of this hypocrisy on the people of Africa have been significant. Many Africans have been left without access to basic necessities such as healthcare, education, and clean water, while others have been forced into poverty and become vulnerable to exploitation, including modern-day slavery. This has perpetuated a cycle of poverty and underdevelopment in many parts of Africa, which has been difficult to break.
