How today's Zerocoin article relates to PIVX


First and foremost, none of these issues affect PIVX any longer. One was never a problem in PIVX, another was fixed in November, and the last is fixed in v3.1 and zPIV is disabled until then.

An article was released today discussing past and present vulnerabilities in the libzerocoin repository most zerocoin coins are based on. PIVX posted a response here but I want to provide some more details.

As mentioned in the article, Tim Ruffing practiced responsible disclosure by privately informing the ZCoin team, the PIVX team, and perhaps others. This gave them a chance to design and release patches for the software prior to public release of the information (as most teams have done). This article is that public disclosure

The article discussed 3 separate issues:

Serial Troll – Fixed in v3.1, zPIV is already disabled until the 3.1 fork goes live, so there is no risk right now - If a 3rd party can capture your zerocoin spend and block it from propagating to the network, they can maliciously mark that spend's serial as spent which effectively burns it for the real owner. This requires the attacker to be in a very specific position like controlling your local network or being your ISP, along with several other requirements outlined in the article.
Additionally, PIVX mitigated this risk in February by prioritizing zPIV spends, on top of our already long accumulation phase of 10 to 19 blocks. There are no reported cases of this attack on PIVX (or any other coins to my knowledge)

Inflation – Fixed in v3.0.5 - https://github.com/Zerocoin/libzerocoin/pull/16 – Allows spoofed zPIV spends. This was the attack that hit all zerocoin coins in November. PIVX used their spork to disable zPIV and then invalidated these fraudulent coins instead of rolling back the chain or letting the attacker keep them

Tx signing – Fixed before v3.0.0, PIVX was never affected - https://github.com/Zerocoin/libzerocoin/pull/17 – Allows transaction replication where an attacker can reroute spends to their own address

Issues 2 and 3 were fixed in PIVX and the libzerocoin repository by PIVX's very own Presstab:

While it is difficult to summarize the situation dealing with 5 coins who handled it in different ways, accuracy is still important. The problem with both of these tweets was that they used future and past tense (respectively) for a past tense vulnerability.

Tim Ruffing has said that he will fix a few inaccuracies in the article tomorrow

Little update for folks here (if you aren't in the discord channels).

I'm on my way to the "haste and hustle" event in Toronto, which is spearheaded and largely driven by Gary Vaynerchuk.  PIVX is a main sponsor, and I'll get a LOT of facetime with Gary, introductions to influences, etc, etc...introduce him for his keynote, and also get a few interviews.

PIVX is crossing the threshold into "brand" territory, where recognizable "celebs" and market drivers with lots of followers are beginning to pay attention to the Purple

Ok Ok...bitcointalk is user friendly   Perhaps "overwheleming" at first is a more adequate representation of what I was feeling at that moment

Thanks for the support and encouragement.  PIVX has an incredible community.  It's an honor to be able to do videos and interviews on "behalf" of all of us.

Few Things:

1) UPF - Universal Purple Flow.  Someone on a whim said this in a conversation "It's like PIVX has this Universal Purple Flow" - and it took off.  Many folks (both inside and outside of PIVX) talk about the community.  The People.  How PIVX has and is something special...because it has incredible, cutting edge tech, innovation, etc...AND an incredibly active and uplifting community.

What's interesting to me is this - Saying "We have an incredible community" largely people just go "ehh" and move forward.  Use an acronym to give a representation of the "ness" of the community, and folks go bonkers.

There have been some complaints that UPF was misleading - yet when I ask folks why they felt that way, they said it because it felt like PIVX was pushing some new tech feature (and thus we begin to talk about how they were assuming it was a tech feature).  The point though is people felt mis-led perhaps, and for that, I'm sorry that UPF and talking about UPF made you feel that way.

UPF now is an acronym for and of the community.  It's us as people, and WE....the community, are the ones who have built that, implemented it, changed it, and refined it throughout the lifecycle of this endeavor.  UPF just gave it a name.

zPIV never "leaves" your wallet.  When you authorize a send of zPIV, what occurs is that that zerocoin protocol receives the input you want to spend/send zPIV.  The receiving address (a PIVX address) is credited/deposited with that amount of PIV.  You see your zPIV balance decrease by the same amount.

Bathrobe: Yeah - It's been a patient building for sure.  One that many of us have known is solid, and "markets" are now beginning to validate.

The amount of reach PIVX is setting up to have in 2018 is amazing.

I have a twitter wager going... I said around $80 by end of next year.  Another is saying $100+.  11 PIV is on the line.  Either way - whoever wins, we all win.

The rate we're expanding, I think $80 might be low...

Yup!  Upbit (apparently) has not released their API's yet (that is what CMC informed me)....thus, CMC hasn't added them yet.

on Upbit (Korean Exchange) we are seeing upwards of $30-$40million in volume trades a DAY for PIVX.  This is a really, really good sign and indicator there is a LOT of movement occurring (and wildly, still outside the knowledge of many folks in the US/Europe/Etc).

Multiple factors emerging for #PIVX.

As for news:

1) zPIV : is live, active, and holy crap it's fast.  Compared to all/other zerocoin protocol implemented coins, zPIVs are ~5x faster. 
2) Multi-sig escrow:  That's right, it's ALREADY active and live in the wallets. 
3) Android Wallets: Updated with more features (push notifications for alerts/reminders/core wallet updates are in works).
4) iPHONE wallets: almost completed (<4 weeks to launch).
5) LANGUAGES: PIVX has the MOST native language translations of any crypto(I think we're at 32 languages now?).
6) USE and ADOPTION: First AFRICA crypto transaction using PIVX in a retail store (https://youtu.be/AL2-ONN2Fbk).
7) zDEX: plans for a decentralized exchange within the wallets is already proposed and being explored for PIVX
Governance: 4 proposals for laying the foundations for enhanced and improving governance/voting were submitted.
9) Web Summit: PIVX was the ONLY cryptocurrency at Web Summit (80k attendees, 2500+ exhibitors).  Lots of traction
