No idea what's happened. Hopefully it will get up and running again soon.

Why the price panic? (does anyone know anything about the 7th-Aug massive sell?)
by

Just before heading to bed, I checked the price on BritCoin.co.uk...

1BTC = £4  Shocked

I was a little shocked as I was expecting to see about £8 as it was about 24 hours ago. I'm now under my break even point for electricity consumption, so I'm considering switching off the miners.

However the drop in price seems to be due to a single (or a small number of) massive sells that moved the market:

Does anyone know anything about the 7th Aug massive sell off? Was this a single sale or a very small number of massive sales by the same individual or group? If so, why wasn't the dark pool used?

Anyway, my miners have been switched off temporarily to give them a break, at least until the morning when hopefully things will pick up again - they've been running constantly now for well over a month...

Use a pool that doesn't tell you how many blocks you found?  Smiley

^ This Smiley

It even tells me which worker found the blocks. One of the workers (one GPU) found two blocks. I'm thinking this is my lucky graphics card. I might put that one solo while the other five work pooled Smiley

Yes, 2-3% reject rate is about right for slush as it doesn't do long polling.

Thanks for the confirmation.

You've been pretty lucky, it seems. Maybe you'll be pretty unlucky for a while after this.

The point of being in a pool is to reduce variance; instead of randomly receiving 50 BTC at virtually unpredictable times, you receive smaller amounts at more predictable times. If you don't mind the variance, then by all means mine solo.

This exactly, I would suggest switching now.. but of course in the "long run" you will always come out making more because you aren't relying on a server to be up 24/7 and you aren't paying any fees.

So you get less downtime and more BTC.. hmm..

Hmm, thanks for the suggestion...

Downtime is a factor; Slush's has been down before:

I quite like Slush's interface as it lets me check the status of my workers (and reward) remotely via a convenient interface...

Thanks,

SM

Thanks error,

I thought so too (that I'd been lucky). I wonder what the odds are of three blocks in a month @ 'only' 2100Mhash/sec. I must say that I don't like the variance, however 150 BTC is *substantially* higher than I've earnt via pooled mining and if I find another block in the next couple of weeks I think I'll go crazy.

As for Slush's, my accepted/rejected block ratio is 2.39% rejected/stale; does that seem about right?

Thanks for your advice.

Should I switch to solo mining?

Hello everyone,

I've been Bitcoin mining for just over one month using two machines each with three Radeon 5870 cards giving me approximately 2100 Mhash/second over the time period.

I've earn't an average of 1.5BTC per day on Slush's pool.

However, I've found THREE blocks = (3 x 50 BTC).

http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/6752/15072011022222.png

After finding the first "golden block" a few weeks ago I thought, "Meh - what are the odds? I'll stay in the pool". Then the second came and I thought, "That's my luck done for the quarter!". When the third came, I'm beginning to seriously reconsider pooled mining in favour of going solo.

My question to you all is this; am I best off staying in Slush' pool, moving to another pool or going solo?

Thanks in advance :-)

It all depends on whether new markets will open up to Bitcoin....

I can't see that happening, so it's a market fueled almost entirely on speculation for the foreseeable future.

Direct link to CSV is in this forum thread:

It's not pretty. I'm about half way down - that means that MtGox user accounts pretty much doubled in the last couple of weeks.

I certainly hope MtGox don't die from this but I'm deeply confused as to how they claim that they are able to rollback. How is that even *possible*?

Surely they can declare that the price is at a certain level and/or roll back their orders database but that would surely mean that MtGox would have to dip into their own pockets to stump up the BTC that was taken from any compromised accounts prior to detection.

It's good news that other exchanges will get more custom. It's bad news for new and old users of MtGox.

I put my first 1BTC to GBP (via USD) sale through MtGox last week and they currently have 2BTC of mine. I wonder what will happen :-(

Does anyone have a link to the .csv file in question? I'd like to look myself up on it...

I'm sorry to hear about all your losses :-(

Has anybody been able to confirm that their account balances at MtGox are safe? I have a small about of BTC there (ready for sale - more than 1, less than 10). It's only a small amount (as I don't yet trust MtGox) and I moved it there last week.

I am a newbie, and I'm just experimenting with purchases and sales of smaller amounts before investigating the currency further. The recent events at MtGox are indeed troubling... I hope they haven't lost my BTC...

"TLDR: Buy BTC, Move BTC, Use BTC."

I agree. Add this: "Don't keep all your eggs in one basket".

Allinvain's loss of (equivalent) $500k USD should be a reminder to everyone to keep wallets secure, in smaller amounts kept apart and never, ever reuse usernames and passwords.

"I don't think I used the same password but both sites were the first I signed up to so I might have made that mistake"

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I too have an MtGox account (with BTC in it..) that I hope is restored to the pink of health in due course.

I suspect that the trouble here is using the same username/password on other sites. It seems reasonable to assume that if you have captured a username/password combination that one (bad person) would attempt to use the same credentials at similar sites - it's an easy fix.

Is there a way to report that wallet address as a potential "bad" one? Some form of reputation for addresses might help reduce the affect of stealing currency, even if slightly (every little helps!)...
