The journalist incorrectly interpreted the association. The title should have read  “SolarChange Founders Introduce New Blockchain-Based Network for Global". SolarChange and Solcrypto are affiliates of The SolarCoin Foundation.

https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0065.mediawiki

This BIP describes a new opcode (OP_CHECKLOCKTIMEVERIFY) that allows a transaction output to be made unspendable until some point in the future.

Key element to timelock of SolarCoin generator pool.

SolarCoin Generator Pool Security
The SolarCoin Foundation has made securing the SolarCoin Generator Pool a top priority for 2017 to help give future and current SLR owners certainty about the source and amount of SolarCoin released into circulation.  After much research and debate, balancing security and simplicity, the SolarCoin Foundation proposes a time lock on the Generator Pool. The details are being finalized, but the approach would be similar to what Ripple has communicated: https://www.coindesk.com/ripple-pledges-lock-14-billion-xrp-cryptocurrency

Some common wallet security practices for cryptocurrencies that the SolarCoin Foundation considered are:
-Cold Storage of wallets - Currently implemented for the generator pool and would continue to be operational for any wallets not time locked
-Very small amount of coin available for issuance at any one point in time (reduce risk by shrinking the size of the target) - Timelock of generator pool accomplishes this goal.
-Multi-signature authentication (m of n) from separate resources to access wallets - Currently implemented for the generator pool distributed internationally
-Proactive security of posting 100% collateral to access wallets - Decided against because of smart contract implementation complexity

The SolarCoin Foundation welcomes the community to comment on this important security requirement.

Implementation of these factors definitely seems to be important for the health of this coin long term. I'm especially excited by limited amount of coin available for issuance at any one point in time. This coin really seems to have a strong future ahead!

That is just the security behind the Generator pool. There are always 98 Billion coin available for Claims and 500M for Development is also available at any time.

There are approx 97.5 Billion SolarCoin in there generator pool. With the time lock functionality implemented, they will NOT be available for claims at any time. Only a very small portion will be.

for those interested, there is a channel on solarcoin-group slack for exploring methods and approaches for securing the generator pool of solarcoins.

can i have the link?

I am curious to know how this happened, is it solarangel ? what was the approach ? is there any lessons learned ? how long did the granting process take ? What was the document asked as a proof of production ? thks

The SolarCoin Foundation performed the following Enhanced Due Diligence for one business week verifying the large South African facility:
1) Google maps visibility confirmation
2) Third party confirmation of facility and claimant - http://www.fin24.com/Economy/Major-boost-for-solar-energy-20151005
3) Review of Independent Engineer Commissioning Report
4) Review of Monitoring Portal data showing actual total electricity produced (as well as total irradiance) since the system was connected to the grid
5) Review of Official yield report, showing the realism of the actual generation profile in relation to the simulated results
6) Comparison of actual metered electricity generated to an estimate based on 20% capacity factor for South Africa
7) Affiliate Skype conversation with claimant

SolarCoin's global value is driven by network growth of participants. Open networks like SolarCoin scale and innovate extremely rapidly. The recently announced Nasdaq proof of concept may be an interesting approach for a subset of American Solar producers seeking to augment their SREC or other programs using the private markets LINQ technology.  We welcome innovation in the solar energy space and look forward to encouraging potential participants into the SolarCoin program.  SolarCoin has been granting rewards to global solar energy generators since 2014, and now uses the lowest carbon footprint open blockchain technology available.

Both lfloorwalker and corather are correct.

Thermodynamics rests on two main laws. Both are first principles: The first law commands the conservation of energy, and the second law commands irreversibility: the tendency of all currents to flow from high (temperature, pressure) to low. These two laws are about systems in the most general sense, viewed as black boxes, without shape and structure.

The two laws of thermodynamics do not account for nature completely. Nature is not made of black boxes. Nature’s boxes are filled with evolving, freely morphing configurations—even the fact that they have names (rivers, blood vessels) is due to their appearance, organization, or design. Where the second law commands that things should flow from high to low, the constructal law commands that they evolve in configurations that flow more and more easily over time.

Life is flow. The second law defines "what" flows and the constructal law defines "how" things flow. Evolving networks facilitate easier flow over time.

Securing the SolarCoin Generator Pool is a top priority of the SolarCoin Foundation for 2016
The SolarCoin Foundation would like to present the following Generator Pool Security Framework to the community for comment.

Please refer to the following Security Engineering book as a reference: http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rja14/book.html
Some common wallet security practices for crypto-currencies are:
-Cold Storage of wallets (currently implemented for the generator pool)
-Small amount of coin available for issuance at any one point in time (reduce risk by shrinking the size of the target)
-Multi-signature authentication (m of n) from separate resources to access wallets
-Proactive security of posting 100% collateral to access wallets

Generator Pool Security Examples
SLR Drip 1
- 97.5 B SLR in generator pool is replaced with a 97.5B notional algorithm that “drips” a set amount (X) of SLR to a granting wallet (s) and replenishes it based on granting activity.
- Access to granting wallet requires multi signature authentication from separate sources
- Proactive security measure of posting a high SLR collateral amount to have access to the granting wallet
- The SLR posted collateral to access the granting wallet will be forfeited back to the generator pool if certain predefined activities are not met.
SLR Drip 2
- Same as SLR Drip 1
- 97.5 B SLR in generator pool is transformed in a smart contract to have a waterfall transfer that “drips” a set amount (X) of SLR to a granting wallet (s) and replenishes it based on granting activity.

Please provide feedback on this important security requirement.
Regards,
The SolarCoin Foundation
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Generator Pool Security Framework

Goals
 Static
  -Non-stop Function (high availability)
-No single actor or point of failure can limit global granting
  -Ease of repeated use
  -Transparency whenever possible
-Security for at least 40 years
-Fail safe (failure has limited repercussions)
 Dynamic
-Future group proof (expanding and rolling control) oversight
-Ability to "reset" system in extreme without hardfork? i.e. transfer all coins to new secure account hardwired with new "secure" system.
    -40 year design
-Trusted Control either by people/and machine
  -Increasingly "distributed de-centralized " control

Constraint Dimension
 Static
-Limit outbound flow to 1MWh = 1SLR parity or claimed parity
-Must by consensus community acceptable in terms of "control" and over-rides
-Genesis pool must not be greater than 5% of circulating SLR
-Simple solutions preferred over Complex solutions
 Dynamic
-Don't know future location(s) of future lock control of wallets and keys
-Not sure about future wallet technology
  -Don’t know future demand
-Don't know future users or "owners" of pool, keys, locks

Ideal end functioning state
 -Fully decentralized granting
 -Automatic granting of verified claims
   -No non-verified transactions
-Impervious to external probes / attacks
-Fully transparent security (decentralized nature of ownership)

Failure points/modes
 Wallet(s) lock holder(s)
  Wallet publication
    Human compromised (black mail etc.)
actors who want to shut it down economically (macro actors likely TAX/regulate out of existence)
         Geo political Threat
           -Explicit seizure
           -"wealth" taxation
           -technical blocking IP
           -Wallet Seizure
           -key seizure
   Wallet loss
Obsolete security (technology overwhelms it Quantum crypto etc.)
      -Cracking technology improves
  Disburse account (send from) account
 Key(s)
   -Key theft
   -Key publication
   -Key loss
     -Death of holder/loss
 Requestors claimant(affiliate/sub affiliates)
  -Community
-Community Suicide "Scarcity gone wild" (kill the generator pool)
-Community Suicide "claims gone wild" (hyper inflation)
  -lost wallets
  -lost keys
 SolarCoin transactions
  -Community
    -disagrees with grant
  -Coin Theft
  -Device weaknesses
     -IP snooping
     -inbuilt wallet weakness BIP100
     -Server weakness
-man in the middle type attacks
  -Confirmation requirements
 SLR Request for claim payment
 SolarCoin Blockchain
  -Hardfork
    -spam/spim
-hackers (halt of inhibit for fun)
 SolarCoin blockchain explorer
   -Message spoofing
 Key Holder(s)
  -Blackmail coercion legal tax
  -lost keys
  -publication of keys
  -hack (known)
  -hacked unknown
  -key transfer
  -key distribution
 Failure scenarios
-Each element should have a failure scenario (stops functions) what it over-ride protocol and worst failure event.

The "Earnable matured interest" in the pop-up box next to the Staking circle is actually the Time-active fraction with range of 0 to 1 (0% to 100%)
Please see pages 6 and 7 of the link below:
http://www.vericoin.info/downloads/VeriCoinPoSTWhitePaper10May2015.pdf

It is a confusing label carried over from VeriCoin.
An attempt will be to display the interest rate if it does not consume to much CPU power.
If not, the confusing label "Earnable matured interest" will be removed.
