We also help other less famous Hong Kong-Canadian organizations--any others that ask, really. There's a whole community over here that basically lives in fear of the CCP. If you know another group in need of support, just tell them to reach out to us. We don't care if you give us Bitcoin or not; we will help them anyways. I will also walk away happy if you donate Bitcoin to some other HK group, instead.

I (one of the Bitcoin Co-op directors) was an English Second Language teacher before Bitcoin, and I still help run a student group with over 22,000 Facebook followers. I met my best friend through this group, someone who has helped me through thick and thin, and they keep complaining to me about China. Please do not take my attempt to help them as an attempt to step on anybody's territory; I would prefer you to help Hong Kong in whatever manner you prefer.

Please rest assured that your money would be safe, however. I have been doing CoinFest (www.coinfest.org) since 2013, and never taken embezzled from it. You can see all our finances on our website, tracked via blockchain, since we do not use fiat. I've been responsible for many other nonprofit initiatives in the blockchain space, as well. I also would not want to sacrifice my reputation; one of my startup projects (www.eslcoin.org) communicates directly with the British Columbia Securities Commission, and would lose any chance of getting approval for an ICO in the future.


Definitely a good option. Some friends of ours donate to the cause this way, actually.

You can also volunteer for a pro-Hong Kong organization. We just started doing it, really... some Hong Kong Canadians asked for help protecting their website, and we said "OK." They've already been getting DDoS'd ever since they testified to Canadian parliament. We had existing connections in the ESL/immigrant community, but you can find people in need of help if you look around at their rallies and stuff.

Anybody else working on this? Some Bitcoin community members in Canada have gotten involved due to the high number of Hong Kong expatriates here... they're helping them with security issues. The most notable beneficiary of support has been Alliance Canada Hong Kong--Google them to find lots of news results. See this page about the Initiative. Totally non-profit stuff

Lots of updates! We've had some great events in Decentraland. You can see a promo video of our CoinFest activities, and a full recording of our Decentraland University Workshop. We've scored ample media attention along the way.

COVID19 threw CoinFest for a loop in 2020, forcing the cancellation of all physical events for the first time in our years-long history. We still had to celebrate the usual date in April, however, so we did a big virtual event in Decentraland. We got media attention from multiple outlets and made a promo video you can watch.

Things are still up in the air for CoinFest 2021, but we are optimistic that physical gatherings will be able to resume in April. Activities intended for CoinFest 2020 will resume as previously planned. If the global health situation does not go well, we will still do another event in Decentraland either way. We will provide more information in the next couple months.

Details are now public about our CoinFest event in Decentraland. Coronavirus may have postponed our Expo, for now, but we're still gonna meet, get freebies, play games and explore the decentralized virtual world together. Expo sponsors get free speaking/exhibiting opportunities; others can guarantee a slot for themselves with a small donation to the venue host, whose generosity enables us to keep this event free.

We shall gather in Decentraland, the virtual decentralized world based on blockchain technology, and get fee tokens, play games, and explore together. We have canceled our events in Vancouver for April completely... we probably will not even meet at our local crypto hack space. I recommend taking drastic measures in the UK, as well, which seems to be getting hit hard.

We are working to have an event in Decentraland, though... we just have to build our virtual clubhouse, first. If we can get it done in under two weeks, it would be great if you guys joined us online.

The coronavirus has now brought significant changes to CoinFest this year. Despite our extensive preparations, sponsors and exhibitors from places like Italy and Washington State will not be able to travel. Health officials are also recommending against very large gatherings in Europe and North America.

As a result, events in Vancouver and Manchester will be drastically scaled down, this year. However, events in Africa—which has not been as severely affected—will continue as planned. Postponed events will return in the fall of 2020. Stay tuned for updates regarding new dates and the new status of CoinFest Vancouver and CoinFest UK.

Funny you should ask that. We are heavily considering organizing an event in a decentralized virtual world such as Decentraland. We will let you all know if that plan works out, hopefully soon.
