Re: Mac OS X: Increase Bitcoin keypool

This command:
bitcoin-qt -keypool=1000

Is if you are running Bitcoin from the command line (e.g. Terminal in OS x, or a shell in Linux).

You can edit the config file to increase it, see:
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Running_Bitcoin

You can see the OS x directory and file you need to edit with the keypool=1000 command.

In the wiki the example shows:
#keypool=100

which means it is commented out. You can edit it to say:
keypool=1000

Thanks, I went into the OS X Terminal and typed in

bitcoin-qt -keypool=1000

but it returned the error message "command not found".

I don't feel comfortable creating & editing a config file. Would love to be able to just use the terminal command, but there seems to be no instructions anywhere on how to actually use these terminal commands.

(LOL. And we wonder why "normal people" don't use Bitcoin yet. This is so many years away from being easy enough for the mainstream populace! Wink)

You need to navigate to the directory bitcoin-qt is located in using the terminal before running the command.

More Complicated:
Otherwise for that command to work the moment you open the terminal, you need to edit your .bash_profile to include an EXPORT to the location where bitcoin-qt lives, that is if you want to be able to launch bitcoin-qt wherever you are in the terminal.

Just use 'cd' to get to where Bitcoin-qt lives then run the command

Re: Lost Bitcoins

I'm just wondering how many Bitcoins have been lost to the ether. There are a few threads from 2011 that discuss the philosophical details of lost Bitcoins and one thread in 2013 tries to list all the losses but gets as far as 2 instances totalling juuuuuust over 20 Bitcoin.

I'd like to create a definitive list of lost Bitcoins.

I need an address (so that we can easily find coins that move) and an amount. It might be hard to determine an address if you've formatted your wallet on the hard drive but without an address the data would be meaningless. (Yes I know, you could just not move coins from a wallet to make it appear as if it's lost/abandoned but why would you do that?)

Amount | Address
===========

I remember this thread from awhile ago: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=7253.0

That thread might be of some use if your going to honestly sit down and try to track each address. I would make a share on google docs maybe so we all can edit

Nice picture!

I can't say I dream about Bitcoin, I try not to think about it as much as possible.

Hi All, I have been thinking, what happens after the whole 21million bitcoins have been mined? How will it affect demand, supply and price?

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=427519.0 - Check out this experiment which is related, known as Premine coin. All of the coins are already in circulation, the coins were given out to anyone over 30 day period. You can see how the network behaves when a coin is nearing the end of its life in regards to the getBlockReward value. It won't be exactly like Bitcoin since it is not as valuable but you can study several of the qualities it has.

Re: Limit of 7 transactions per second....

:S This sounds like it could be a massive show stopper.

"There is a clear path to scaling up the network to handle several thousand transactions per second (“Visa scale”). Getting there won’t be trivial, because writing solid, secure code takes time and because getting consensus is hard. Fortunately technological progress marches on, and Nielsen’s Law of Internet Bandwidth and Moore’s Law make scaling up easier as time passes." - Gavin Andresen

Re: Why does BTC cause so much controversy even with friends and family?

It takes effort to learn how revolutionary Bitcoin really is. My room-mate does not want to take the time to read the white-paper.

My brother thinks Bitcoin is "useless". After asking which is more important: Games or Bitcoins, he answered "games". I then revealed that Bitcoin market cap (4.4 Trillion at this writing) exceeds the entire revenues of the world entertainment industry (2.8 Trillion in 2009).

Both my banker and sister classify Bitcoin as an investment, akin to the stock market. They see the volatility, but not necessarily the fundamental potential of the technology.

I also have an acquaintance that informed me they (as in the people in charge of it) "canceled" Bitcoin (this was in June or so). I resisted the urge to tell them they failed to tell me to shut down my node Tongue It appears people can't comprehend that it is decentralized.

Bitcoin's market cap is not 4.4 Trillion :X, it is 4.4 Billion which is alot less than the sum of the entire Video Game industry. Use this time before they understand to get well ahead of the plebeian minded fellow.
