We're missing a lot of great short blocks on Deepbit, bithopper only picked up the one where "Your Shares" are shown, the others were ignored.

What scheduler are you using?

Trying to mine Deepbit and using slicing at the same time might not work so well unless the slices are very very small.  It doesn't take them long to get past the default 43.5% mark.  If you are in the middle of a slice when Deepbit starts a new round, it could be over before you get a chance to hop.

Also, Deepbit support doesn't seem to be working perfectly yet, so it might just be an issue with BH.  Like others, I found that I only hopped to Deepbit once after updating bitHopper and running it for 10 hours or so.

All I'm saying is if you have more than three pools, the only hopping you have to do is when another pool has fewer shares than the one you're on. You shouldn't have to jump to backup at  43% - this number its only useful if you have one proportional pool and one pps pool. So if any pool ops are checking for you hopping off at 43%, not hopping off then won't have an effect on your long term earnings.
...
sort of. we're talking long term here, so even going over 1*diff doesn't matter. If you set the threshold to 3*diff, then for a particular round it might make a difference, but only if no other pools were available. But that's pretty rare and in the long run it wont have a significant effect on overall earnings.
...
I know this is all very counter intuitive - I wrote the sim and it took me a week to believe the results. Plus I'm probably not explaining it well, sorry.

First, I wanted to thank you for doing these sims and sharing the results, this is absolutely fascinating.  It makes sense right up until going over 1*diff part.  I think that is what I'm having trouble getting my head around, so maybe you could try to explain that aspect of it better?

It seems that any time that you can submit a share with a higher EV that is your best course of action.  Is this specifically vs. submitting to a PPS pool?  Would I be right in assuming that if you had the option to Solo mine vs submit a share at more than 1*diff that Solo mining would be the better option in the long run?

Sorry for all the questions, just a little bit mind bending....

(Oh, and if anyone has a hden invite, I'd love to not be cluttering up the thread with non-BH stuff.  Thanks)

first block bonus sent to varkbit

And received.

Thank You and Good Luck with your pool.

I would not have been submitting even 1 share if it wasn't for c00w's bitHopper, so some thanks goes to him as well.

Happy mining!

I'm ultraparanoid. It should be my username...

I have my wallet on my Linux box who's / is under 4 concurrent layers of DM_crypt. I ran that system before I ever heard of bitcoin. I'm not doing anything illegal, I just don't think my business is anyone's damn business. I take my wallet offline with a flash drive using TrueCrypt. I use the triple cascade encryption option on a file container. I even use that tiny new lexar echo drive and geocache a backup of the wallet in a similar container file. It's tiny, and even if somebody finds it, what can they do? That degree of encryption is just stupid. I'm considering a MicroSD geocache instead, it's even smaller.

If I could do that to the cash in my wallet, I would. You can't hide cash in a geocache as an off-site, off-line backup, and still be assured of it's safety. BTC is the best.

I only wish I could find someone local to buy BTC from w/ cash... The locator services are useless. If the forums had a geographicaly organised section, it would be a dream...

There's still time to change your username, because that would have been most fitting!

BTC to Cash locally is tough, I would suspect mostly because this is a pretty small community by most standards and we're spread out all over the globe.  I haven't found a good solution yet either, I'm just hoping that as Bitcoin matures so will the locator services and alike.

But, until then, I just had to offer my kudos on a truly terrifying amount of encryption on your part.   Shocked

Re: what makes the value of bitcoins go up and down

I'll guess this has been asked and answered more than a few times, but I'll give it a quick go:

Bitcoins go up and down in price in response to changes in Supply and Demand.

That is it.  Since production of Bitcoins happens at a fixed rate (over the long term), the Supply side of that equation is always worked into the price.  So essentially Bitcoins respond to changes in Demand.

There is no "man behind the curtain", just simple economics 101.  Think of anything that could increase or decrease demand for Bitcoins and you will have one of the many drivers of bitcoin pricing.

Were you guys having any problems with your server a few hours ago?

I was seeing 0 for the GH/s rate for the pool but shares were still going up?

Anyways, being in the U.S. I seemed to get an unusually high number of stales when I was mining with you guys a few weeks ago.  Have any changes been made to help this problem or is the U.S. not your primary area of service?

Thanks, hope you guys kill your current block soon!

Buy time buy time, everybody do your share!

Why is it buy time?  Do you know what receivership is?

No one knows what "receivership" is in this context.  I assume it means he is going to divide up the remaining BTC between everyone, maybe based on how much they had deposited at the time of the "attack".

That would sort of mirror what would happen in the real world when a company dissolves.

Longtime lurker, first time poster... uh... obviously.

I've been mining for the last month or so, slowly building my rigs up.

Currently running 7 miners with 28 cards (mostly 5830's, a few 5850's thrown in) that come in around 8200~ mH/s.  Already looking to expand.  Smiley

I believe there is a huge future in Bitcoin.  My former life was spent as a commodity options trader and I'm hoping to branch out from mining to also develop some good services for the BTC economy.

Cheers!
