Re: Why i prefer POW over POS
by
Thread7
on 13/05/2014, 04:17:37 UTC
I disagree with several of balu2's points:
-POW gives everybody the opportunity to get in on a coin through mining. POS on the other hand favours early adopters. People who come late to the show have a serious disadvantage.
I think just the oppposite - Those with the biggest and best mining equipment (ASICS, gridseed, graphics cards, or whatever) get a greater percentage of POW coins.

-POW means the creation of coins is decentralized where many POS-coins are mined out within days and weeks which makes flashmining an even greater issue
-POW is time-tested
I agree here.

Also, as said by others - POW uses up a lot of energy.  POS is superior in this respect.
The other argument I've heard is that POS usually means more centralization.  POW tends to be very decentralized.  I'm not sure that is necessarily a bad thing.

The new BitID Authentication System
by
Thread7
on 07/05/2014, 17:30:17 UTC
I just learned of this new login authentication service that uses your Bitcoin wallet to login to various places.  Instead of "Connect with Google" or "Connect with Facebook" instead you can "Connect with Bitcoin".

http://www.coindesk.com/authentication-protocol-bitid-lets-users-connect-bitcoin/

My gut reaction is that this is not a good idea.  It creates another system that needs to access your private key.  Why is that necessary when you aren't making a payment?  For example, if I want to access my hotel room - instead of a key;swipe card;access code - BitID would allow you to use your bitcoin wallet.   But this means the authentication mechanism needs to access my private key.  Why do I want that happening when an access code or something would not put my wallet credentials at more risk?

Thoughts?

The drinkable book and water out of thin air look like great products.  However, I would suggest to the devs to concentrate on the coin itself, exchanges, and getting affiliated with charities.  (Unless these products are charities in themselves).  Things like this could cause you to get sidetracked from the true mission of getting widespread usage of Donationcoin.

Re: Next Dogecoin Halving
by

I've done quite a bit of Googling and can't find out when the last DOGE halving actually happened.  I was curious to see if the price went up or down. I did find a halving on Feb 14th, 2014.  The price went up in the days leading up, but then went gradually down afterwords.  This most recent halving - I'm not sure because I can't find when it happened!

Hmmm, I just see that [Suspicious link removed] link was deemed suspicious and removed.  No sure why since that is a popular link shortening service.  Anyways, here is the link directly to youTube:

Wow, the net hash rate is amazing.  12,191 MH/s.  Is it the fact that everyone wants to mine it while they still can during the 5 days?

#‎Dogecar‬ was mentioned on the Fox Talladega NASCAR 2014 broadcast - YouTube /wsYMU]http://[Suspicious link removed]/wsYMU
This may seem trivial to some.  But I think it is a huge step for alts.  NASCAR is an extremely popular mainstream sport that now has altcoin exposure.

Good points.  I can't argue with any of them.  I do think the crazy arms race for mining needs to stop at some point.  Maybe a POS coin could make some gains on bitcoin.

I like to see the network hash rate on one of these tables.  And I guess it would need the algorithm type too so you could accurately compare.

I just want to say that I really like the idea of this coin and have started mining it.  Suggestion, when you hook up with a charity, get them to send an email blast to their membership notifying them of DonationCoin.  Get their members to vote on the exchanges.

What are the specs on the coin - Scrypt or SHA-256?  Proof of Stake, Proof of work, or hybrid? What wallets are available?  Maybe you can just say what other coin it was based off?

Any faucet would need to be pretty sophisticated.  Spoofing your lat.lon coordinates is a piece of cake.  Sharing a QR code with thousands of people would be easy.  I do have an idea to make it more secure.  Maybe I'll send a PM with the idea.

I didn't read every post in this thread but noticed a lot of the back and forth is regarding the photograph.  I must admit that it also looks photoshopped to me.  If not, then I think there is an easy way to verify it.  Just go out and take a few more photos.  One from the exact same spot.  The environment most likely changed a bit from when the first photo was taken.  That should make it look slightly different yet a human should be able to easily tell it was taken in the same spot.  Second, take one standing maybe 10 meters to the left.  And take another 10 meters to the right.  If those photos come back as looking very natural, then there should be little question as to the validity.  And I would be glad to donate.

I like the initiative.  I think interviewing the developers of a given coin can give you a lot of insight into many of these items.  If they decline to be interviewed, well, then they may have something to hide which would impact their rating.

I lost some various coins that are now stuck in there.  Thankfully not a ton.  I always thought this exchange would get it together.  The site was painfully slow most of the time.  But the thing I liked is that they always let you know what we going on via their Twitter feed.  I guess I just need to be more cautious.

The "worst" voting is the funnest thing here for me personally.  There are/were some bad exchanges out there.  Bad graphics and bad coins too.

The web site just asks for BTC.  It doesn't even say what the coin is all about.  IMO a very poor implementation.

Re: Most efficient distribution strategies

Social media distribution can be gamed in most cases rather easily.  Requiring a Facebook verified ID helps level the playing field a bit.  I like what Silicon Valley Coin did.  They mailed coin vouchers to random addresses in Silicon Valley.  Finding ways to get coin in the hands of those who didn't request it is probably the most fair.
