So what are the next steps for nem?

What would you like them to be?  Wink
If you haven't yet, come join us and propose projects, ideas etc. and help us make NEM something never before seen in the history of men! :-D

I believe that the first next step now is the publishing of the whitepaper.
Hopefully shortly after we are going to see mobile app.
Continuous strenghtening of the network, nodes etc.
Continuous refinement and adding of the features line n-x multisig, asset exchange etc.

Remember that by each day that NEM network and security isn't breached it gives NEM project validity.

Is there is any market place for XEM? Where can we buy/sell stuff for XEM?

Not directly yet AFAIK, but there is https://coingateway.net/ through which one can pay with XEM wherever BTC is accepted.

Also we are now beginning to build up a momentum, infrastructure etc. and that is the "only" adventage Bitcoin has and it is what makes its value now.

At this point everything rises and falls with Bitcoin. Every crypto is linked to Bitcoin and that's bad for NEM, too. NEM has to shake Bitcoin off and be a standalone-thing.

That would be a success definitely never before seen in crypto world...
That is also something I believe NEM has good foundations for... So many REAL stakeholders presents a good staring point to building that.

You don't need 5 million, that is just the number that would be optimal.
They are not about to say, "surprise, you only have 3 million so your out!"

I agree.
no way that would be consistent with what NEM is and want to present to the world.
All the decisions so far were spot on and there is no doubt that this "5 million XEM" thing will benefit NEM and not harm it.

Also, based on experience so far, NEM is a long term thing and there is no rush with anything and I like that approach a lot so I don't think there is going to be - ups, you didn't buy/have 5 mil on time so you are missing out on anything and will never be able to have some X feature/benefit whatever.
The only thing people may (and probably will) miss out is a low price to buy XEM.

I'm slowly converting all my NXT to NEM. I have my orders on Polo that are slowly being filled day by day for a price I'm comfortable with...
The highest price I was buying for was 113 sat/xem and right now I'm hoping to get as much as I can before some new ninja announcement comes out.

I don't know if price is going to be even lower but once the mobile app appears and devs finish the whitepaper and turn to really build on top of this most advance "base" in crypto, we all will be sad we haven't invested more.

Let's not forget that this "base" which already works just fine with one of the smoothest launches I've encountered. This "base" already offers some never before seen things like multisig, PoI, very neat Harvesting options, remote nodes, encrypted messaging etc.

I'm saying "base" because that it is - it is only beginning of the platform that will come in the future and I thing it will be HUGE.

I like this NIS/NCC thing because this modular approach gives so much opportunity for various things to be built on top and around NEM.

I already have a choice of having a full node on my computer or using NCC wallet more like electrum wallet.
When I fire up NXT wallet I have to wait for hours to update. I'll never have to wait that with NEM... BTC - I'm even scared to run the Armory on my desktop pc because I don't have SSD yet on it and waiting for a two day torment of my HDD is not an option...

What can go wrong with NEM?
A lot of things - fate of all cryptos is unclear but they are the future no doubt there...
Some big flaw in NEM? - maybe but seen how fast the reaction our devs already presented I'm at ease...
What if something better comes along? - always a possibility but don't forget that adaptability is the key to success in nature and NEM is built with that adaptability in mind. We have great devs, a great number of supporting teams of different specialization, best distribution so far, lots of people supporting and adding to the project already, big stash of XEM in different funds to grow further than we can now imagine. Also we are now beginning to build up a momentum, infrastructure etc. and that is the "only" adventage Bitcoin has and it is what makes its value now.

Just a reminder to everyone.
Please have at least a backup of your private keys...

Sorry, I don't get the point. Do you mean, if I would set up a public node on a VPS, the node would harvesting 24/7?

Same here. I've only got a stock of 0.1 NEMStakes ( around 245k ) and harvested 1369 XEM so far. This is much more than I have ever done on other cryptos. This shows the coins is really fair for non big-mining-rig owners...

And when you set it up so that you can do that even when your computer is off -   Grin

It doesn't have to be public - but that would be great! ;-)
Here is the list of public nodes... Please add yours if you want to setup one for yourself (and others to use).
https://forum.ournem.com/vps-nodes/list-of-dedicated-vps-nodes-to-conect-nem/

When you connect to remote node (under settings - change "localhost" to address of the remote node), and if you have activated delegated harvesting, you can start delegated harvesting.
Then you can turn off your computer.

Desktop PCs and Laptops are very ineficient and use more electricity than VPS instances or even Raspberry Pis. So why not use them for having a node (NIS) working on them and then you just connect to them with your NCC from your Desktop PC.
A great benefits are that you always have up to date NIS (no syncing required), you are more secured because your wallet is not exposed to the network all the time, you harvest 24/7 even totaly free if you set up your node using free Amazon VPS like described in this tutorial:
https://forum.ournem.com/vps-nodes/list-of-dedicated-vps-nodes-to-conect-nem/msg16429/#msg16429

I don't imagine getting better than that! :-D

I have 3.7% importance but have been unable to harvest a single block. It has been days does anyone have any advice or is this how it works?

EDIT nvm I did harvest a block but the reward was zero. So why harvest at all? It doesnt seem like the reward is worth it.

Hi!
I'm glad the harvesting is working for you...
You should have harves more blocks in last few day than just 1. I have importance of 6.74%oo and I find from 3-8 blocks per day...
Even then I wouldn't call that worth it in sense of profit...

Since this being PoI - there is no new coins created through Harvesting (in comparison to BTC). So what we get when finding a block i s only the fees for transactions that are in that block. So as the NEM grows, the quantity of transactions will grow so will the rewards for those finding those blocks.

On the other hand, you don't need to spend a lot of computer power (read electricity and money for ASICs etc) to harvest XEM... You can do it for free!
On our forum there are guides how to set up your own 24/7 FREE node which will harvest for you - something you cannot do in BTC or other PoW cryptos.

Presently none of us who harvest (except extra big accounts - like exchanges (Poloniex)) don't really do that for big profit... It is done to support the network and occasional higher yeilding block is very gladly received :-)

Do you use delegated or local harvesting - I ask this for this reason: maybe you turn off your computer over night - if you are doing local then during off time you are not harvesting.

If non of this works then headover to http://forum.ournem.com/ or http://support.ournem.com/ to get support.
It's harder to help people here as theres also other "discussions" going on.

Glad to have you in NEM!

When I installed the NEM client (v0.6.28) and imported my private key the balance showed 0 XEM. The private key correctly loaded the same address that I sent in. I also set it to primary account. What am I missing?

Please check this thread that your address is not listed as sock:

Thank you. So how can I increase importance in other way than buying more XEMs?

By transacting with other.
We are trying to test that system/theory here on official forum:
https://forum.ournem.com/general-discussion/spread-some-xem!/

But be aware that what we do on that thread is not to increase profit in harvesting because when you send back and forth transactions it costs you fees - more than what the increased improtance score will bring you.
But it is fun! :-D

Someone please explain how to import export wallet and default locations of wallet for manual backup.

Windows,osx, linux.

From the Knowledgebase: http://support.ournem.com/knowledgebase.php?article=3

Your NEM client stores your private keys, addresses and other valuable information in .wlt (wallet file) and .adb (addressbook) files.

It is wise to have proper backup of those files.

You can locate them if you use Windows here:

C:\Users\[your user name]\nem\ncc\

Both files will have name same as what your wallet is named but they will have extensions .wlt and .adb

Here is more detailed tutorial with screenshots.

http://blog.nem.io/how-to-find-export-or-delete-your-wallet-and-address-book-file/

Make copies of them. Remember they are protected with password you've set up for your wallet. Make sure you don't loose/forget that password.

Warning: Please do not use the built-in feature to back-up your wallet! Most likely it will generate incorrect data and backup will NOT be usable. We appologize for this issue, it will be fixed in the next release.

what are the benefits of the delegated harvesting Huh
from: http://support.ournem.com/knowledgebase.php?article=13

Which is better? Local or delegated harvesting?

Local harvesting is the default option and implies you are harvesting on your local computer where you have both the node (NIS) and the wallet (NCC) present. Simple to use. All the control of NEM, XEM, uptime and harvesting is in one machine and it's owner. When that machine is not working (or disconnected) there is no supporting of the NEM network, no harvesting and no synchronizing with the network - that means that when that machine is started again it can take some time before it is synced with the network so that transactions can be seen or made.

If 24/7 harvesting is planned on local, everyday PC, the cost of electricity will be higher than setting up a node on some VPS or Raspberry Pi

Delegated harvesting is awesome and uniqe feature of NEM. It implies transfering of your importance to some other node (NIS) (it can be whatever node your wallet (NCC) connects to - even your own and even local). To enable delegated harvesting the transfer of the importance must be done by a special transaction and it needs time (6 hours). After it is activated, wallet (NCC) can access a remote (or local) node (NIS) and harvest using the resources of that node even if the computer where the wallet is turned off or offline.

For example: my friend has a Raspberry Pi that is always online and working. He installs NIS on it and both my friend and I can connect with our desktop PCs to that Raspberry Pi computer to harvest, issue transactions etc. When either or both of us turn off our PCs, harvesting will continue for both of us.

Security is very high or even better then local harvesting since no keys left our PCs. So if his Raspberry Pi is hacked or stolen or whatever - we are safe. Like we used offline wallets. Also, when if we dont turn on our PCs for a month and then want to check our XEM balance or issue transactions we don't have to wait for the syncing of the NIS because Raspberry was doing that all the time. The drawback is that I have to relay on my friend that he will have that Raspberry Pi working.

For both types of harvesting the account must have at least 10 000 XEM vested.

Pros and cons:

Local harvesting:

+ No setup required - just click Start local harvesting

- No offline harvesting

- Time to synchronize if turned off for a while

- Potential security risk from unauthorized access to the machine because of available wallet files

- Higher cost for electricity if run on regular PC vs delegated on VPS or Raspberry Pi

Delegated harvesting:

+ Better security because wallet is not on the same computer that is exposed to the network

+ Lower cost of harvesting

+ Fast connecting to the network (no syncing)

+ Always harvesting (even if desktop/main PC is turned off)

- Needs time to activate/deactivate (6 hours)

- Needs the address of the remote node (if localhost is not used)

Importance is the same on both options so harvesting chance and/or rewards will be the same either way.

If delegated harvesting is used to harvest on local (same) computer than it is virtually the same as local harvesting.

More detailed explanation how local and delegated harvesting works:

The vesting is happening at the rate of 10% per day. So if you transfer 20K today, tomorrow you will have 2K vested, day after tomorrow it will be 4K vested etc...

I don't think that's how it works.
I think only the not vested balance is taken into account and therefore the 10% are smaller than before.
Day 1 it's 10% of 20000
Day 2 it's 10% of (20000 - vested from day 1)
Day 3 it's 10% of vested from day 2
...

So I'm guessing it'll take about a week before you're able to harvest with a balance of 20k.

/edit: Quickly whiped out some python and if I haven't fucked up this is what it should be like (don't count on it though...it's early)

day 1: 2000 vested out of 20000
day 2: 3800 vested out of 20000
day 3: 5420 vested out of 20000
day 4: 6878 vested out of 20000
day 5: 8190 vested out of 20000
day 6: 9371 vested out of 20000
day 7: 10433 vested out of 20000

Thank you for your correction. I think it would be great if we could have some more info about vesting. We get a lot of similar vesting-related questions and I think it would be very helpful to have info about vesting put on FAQ or Knowledgebase.

Hi, where i can get some xem dor starting harvesting?
How i can send them to my wallet, if i get them outside?

Thank you.

Hi do you have an account at one of these exchanges?
https://poloniex.com/

https://bittrex.com/

https://bter.com/

and there are a few more

Yes, I have one on poloniex, but i still don't know how to get/send xem into my wallet((

I don't know what you've done so far so let me begin from scratch:

  • Go to nem.io and download the most recent version of NEM software here: http://nem.io/install.html
  • Istall it and everything is ok you should see the wallet (NCC) apear in your browser tab
  • Create wallet - name of the wallet should not contain spaces or dots; also please choose a strong passwor (at least 12 characters)
  • Once logged in your wallet you should see your address on the left side which you can use to accept XEM
  • Please make sure you make a backup of your wallet files
http://support.ournem.com/knowledgebase.php?article=3

Then go over Poloniex and buy some XEM. When you have your XEM you need to send it to your address in your wallet.
To do that go to https://poloniex.com/balances and find your XEM balance. On the right from your balance there are fields where you can set the amount and the address (use your wallet address), you don't need to put any message (but you can if you want) when withdrawing the funds from Poloniex. Click on Withdraw XEM and your XEM should be visible very shortly in your wallet!

If you have more questions, and you probably have, feel more than welcome to join our official forum: https://forum.ournem.com/ or submit a ticket on support.ournem.com
We welcome you in NEM! :-)

Thank you for help.
I have one more question, What if had about 20k of XEM, how many time i need to get them on vested balnce(10k) and to start harvesting?

The vesting is happening at the rate of 10% per day. So if you transfer 20K today, tomorrow you will have 2K vested, day after tomorrow it will be 4K vested etc...

Btw why this Message is needed to withdraw?

It is not needed... You may leave it blank

When depositing XEM on Poloniex it is needed so that they can distinguish your deposit from others (they use one NEM address for all deposits as I remember)
