But still if there is only an ever shrinking supply of coins... It doesnt bode well for the longevity of bitcoins.

Re: If theres only 21 million bitcoins, How many people can use BitCoin ?

For the satoshi to be the base unit of BitCoin the value would have to skyrocket...well over 1BTC = $1000 USD

Also my other thread deals with bitcoins going out of circulation past the inital 21 million mark, While related, is not exactly the topic of this thread.

If theres only 21 million bitcoins, How many people can use BitCoin ?

Think about it, how many people do you figure are already using and trying to amass bitcoins? At least 500,000 by now if not more....

Thats only 42 BitCoins per person......Which sets a rather low transaction cap, about $1,500 at todays rate. assuming you have the max amount of bitcoins someone could have, if everyone had roughly the same amount of BitCoins.

If BitCoins only ever go out of circulations past 21 million, What do we do when all coins are stored in dormant, idle or otherwise inaccessible wallets ?

Example; Lets say a person has accumulated 10,000 BTC over their lifetime...and then...they die. There computer is formatted and either resold or passed on to a relative. Either way the wallet.dat and the private keys are gone.

Thats 10,000 BTC that will never be circulated again.

It that occurred only 21,000 or so times. That would the whole of BitCoins in circulation would it not ?

Re: Vanity addresses: how to get them?

Does generating an address reserve that address on the network then? Or are you just mathematically validating said address?

Once you have a validated unused address, How does one then get it into your wallet ?
It doesn't reserve it in the networks (at least I'm NEARLY sure it doesn't) until you add it to your wallet. What wallet are you using to store your addresses? If you are using a web-based wallet, it varies, but for Bitcoin-QT (the desktop client), go here for instructions: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/How_to_import_private_keys

Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking about writing a program to generate valid addresses. Just for educational purposes, I dont think i would get into the keys part of it.
