Yes, could someone please tell me what do all these categories mean? Will they contribute in building up our merit in anyway?

Re: Is it possible that facebook will be replaced?

Facebook is thriving because of the amount of user data it has, and it is using that data to show its users advertisements. It sells user data to companies, which then show us ads. Highly unlikely that Facebook will die anytime soon.

Re: how to identify a scam ICO project
by
Vinz1992
on 31/03/2018, 17:09:47 UTC
Here are certain steps you can take to check whether an ICO is a scam -

1. Are the team members on the website and included in the whitepaper? Do they have Linkedin profiles and an online presence? If the team members have funny names and the pictures look too perfect, check and double check on the authenticity of the profiles.

2. Read the whitepaper carefully. Is the writer making far-fetched claims? Is the technical architecture and tokenomics included in the whitepaper? Is the business idea expressed simply enough or is it a buzzword salad?

3. Check for code. Is the code on github during the ICO? If it's not, the dev team probably has no intentions of building the product. If the code is there, has it been audited by a third party?

4. Are the members of the team available on Slack or Telegram to answer your questions?

It is a possibility, but it might not be Bitcoin. Bitcoin's system is slow and expensive. It has to be something more efficient.

New SEC regulations
by
Vinz1992

What are the implications of the new SEC regulations for cryptocurrencies? Is it true that new ICOs will have to shell out half a million dollars to get their token registered as a security and it will be 12 months after an ICO before trading in it is allowed?

The patience you need as a newbie account member, the 360 seconds wait to post. I think bitcointalk teaches you a lot of patience other than give you knowledge about the crypto world.

Is this a spam message on BitcoinTalk?

My friend is not being to join BitcoinTalk. He has tried registering with two ids but both the times he got a long message which is-  Remove Proxyban
Due to a bug, some payments made between March 3 and March 5 were not credited. Only if you ALREADY PAID and it was NOT CREDITED, email your username and the Bitcoin address to which you paid to mar18paybug@theymos.e4ward.com.

"Your IP address has previously been used for evil on this forum, or it is a known proxy/VPN/Tor exit node, so you are required to pay a small fee before you are able to post messages or send PMs. You can still use all of the read-only features without paying.

Your account contains 1.05 units of evil. To atone, you must pay a total of 0.00000297 bitcoins (0.00297 mBTC; 297 satoshi). Pay to the address 3657VS3gJhztVvSxGAzd2qkYztjVAAivCU. Once you have paid the full amount, wait a few seconds and then reload this page. If the fee is so small that your wallet is unable to send it, you can send any larger amount, though you will not be refunded the difference.

Alternatively, any forum staff member and some other notable members can manually whitelist you. Paying the fee is probably easier/quicker, though.

If you don't have any bitcoins, you can get small amounts of free bitcoins using the sites listed here. It is recommended that you give the free bitcoin sites the address listed above. Do not collect money in your own wallet and then send the bitcoins to the forum -- this will likely result in significant network fees.

If you find any bugs in this system, email pbbugs-J6X0kjVn@theymos.e4ward.com. For example, send email here if your payment is not registered an hour after sending it. The mere fact that payment is required for your IP address is never a bug. You will be permanently banned if you send email here requesting free whitelisting.

People commonly say, "I haven't posted anything before, so why on Earth am I banned?" You are not banned. Your IP address was previously used for evil, so everyone who uses that IP address has to pay this registration fee."

He is absolutely new to bitcoin, and he has never before used any of his devices or ids for registering on bitcointalk before. So why is he seeing this?

All those who are scorning at me and other people who found the story are completely missing the point here. Because we know that there are scammers out there, we ought to be extra careful while doing our research before investing in anything about which we know so little. Isn't it? The couple probably has a lot of money and did not care much about that 1000 USD and that's why they threw it away like that without bothering to check with the internet or someone else before their purchase.

I have not seen their coin, but my friend has, and he tells me it is a collectible. The thing is, that the couple only got in touch with my friend after they "faced trouble selling the Bitcoin". They're the kind of rich, snooty couple who would've bragged about their "achievement" at some party had they managed to sell it off successfully.

Okay...so I have a funny Bitcoin story for you which I heard from a friend.

A middle-aged couple bought 1 BTC for a 1000 USD recently. They were happy beyond what can be described in words at the good deal they had got. So they got in touch with my friend to ask him about how they could sell it. He sent them the links to various medium articles and blogposts on how to buy and sell bitcoin. The couple got in touch with him again and told him that they had failed to sell the bitcoin. So my friend went and met them. They then "showed" him their bitcoin. It was a plastic coin with the Bitcoin symbol on it!
I see nothing funny in this story. Elderly people find it very difficult to keep up with the changes in the modern world. They are like children. Scammers took advantage of this and tricked them. What's so funny? If their place were your parents or grandparents you laughed too ? Maybe it was all of their savings. Never laugh at someone else's grief.

I'm sorry but I'm not feeling sorry for laughing at them. The couple's not elderly first of all. They are well-versed with computers, at least they know Facebook and Snapchat. They socialize in circles where people have a lot of money and have invested in Bitcoin. My point is, that before jumping into anything at all, and especially something as complex as Bitcoin, blockchain and other cryptocurrencies, you must do your research thoroughly.

Well, I get your point there. But it's funny to me because so many people around me are so blinded by the prospects of making money from Bitcoin that they are jumping into it without any research at all. They could have asked someone who knew about Bitcoin before deciding to buy the plastic coin. And it's not that they aren't literate or something. They probably just bought it because they had heard about it from their friends without doing any prior research about it.

hmm. there are physical bitcoins out there, I don't know if there are any plastic ones, but it is practically a simple object with bitcoin logo on it which also actually contains bitcoin with the public key and private key and everything.

is your friend sure that it was not just an ugly collectible?
https://www.coindesk.com/10-physical-bitcoins-good-bad-ugly/

https://media.coindesk.com/uploads/2014/09/antana-statistical-coin.jpg

oh.. Is that so? But how do you know that the coins are valid? And where do you get these physical coins from?

And I'm not sure if it was the kind of coin you are talking about... It's the first time I have heard of such a thing.
