Re: Isn't Mtgox multiple currency trading kind of a sham?

I don't see any new feature or change on the trading interface regarding different currency markets and in fact they have *removed* all reference to depositing via Australian dollars.

Yeah, this was confusing. It looks like the options shown for Add Funds are dependent on your selected wallet. I got an AUD wallet by swapping my main account currency to AUD, then back to USD. Then if you change to your AUD wallet via the dropdown next to your username the Technocash deposit method should be visible again.

Re: TradeHill - False emails claiming to be from us or Mt Gox

We've only sent one mass email (I don't believe it had a link in it)

3) Do NOT EVER click a link in an email, or hit reply, and provide any private information to what you think is a request from your bank or financial institution.  It isn't.  It's a scam.

Ahem. OK, you didn't give a login link, just a URL to a blog (which I still had trouble believing was actually associated with Tradehill, because I'd never seen it before). However as pointed out, training customers to click on URL's in emails sent by a financial institution is irresponsible.

Much better would be to show me that message after I logged into the site.

Actually looks like it could be legit.

I wasn't doubting the legitimacy of the email, although they could have done more to make it not set off my immediate reaction of "phishing scam".

If this request is driven by the requirements of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006, I will await with interest to see whether Tradehill is considered to be a reporting entity under that act.

Tradehill - identity requirements for Australian customers
by
Wombat

Tradehill sent me an email (full text below) requesting paperwork to confirm my identity (something that wasn't required when the account was originally created).

Is this a common requirement for BTC exchanges? I have no idea what an Australian AML policy is, but I can certainly believe that they were requested to do this by their Australian bank. I'm not unsympathetic to Tradehill's position here (although I'm dubious that it's an actual legal requirement for them to gather this info), but there's no way I'm sending any of this info that's ripe for identity theft (and certainly not in an unencrypted email as requested), and I've emailed them asking what will happen to my account/funds as a result.

Thoughts?

TradeHill Info info@tradehill.com to bcc: me

Dear customer,

IMPORTANT: We are using sendgrid in order to send this email to hundreds of users. Please do not send us any information to this email address as it will not be received by our team. For reference, we have also posted a blog post with summarized information here: www.TradeHillblog.com.

We have been working to improve our processes to comply with Australian regulations, which has resulted in a few changes that we need to communicate, so we have two updates for our Australian customers.

1-In order to comply with Australian AML policies and our new bank's fraud prevention policies, we will have to verify the identity of our customers. This will be a simple procedure and will be required only once for each account. We have taken every precaution to make this process as agile and painless as possible without interrupting our service.

To begin this process, we will need your full name, any service bill with your name on it (or another document to provide proof of address) and ONE of the following items:

a) Scanned copy of your driver license
b) Medicare number and reference
c) Scanned copy of your passport

Please send this information to info@TradeHill.com from the email address you used to sign up with us and DO NOT reply to this email with the information.

Also, the bank account(s) that you use for deposits and withdrawals, will have to match the name registered in the TradeHill account. In case you require to make a withdrawal to a third party (either to pay for a service or fee) please let us know in advance as we will also have to verify that account.

2-We have opened a new bank account for our customers and the old one at Commonwealth bank will be closed. Please see details below:

Account name: Business Zero Account
BSB: 302-100
Account No: 1794808
Account mailing address: 40 Daley Rd Acton, ACT, 2601
BIC (SWIFT): BKWAAU6P

Please note that the account verification is a requirement from our bank. Non compliance with this may result in our account falling at risk of being frozen or closed which would force us to interrupt service for our customers. Therefore, our goal is to verify all Australian TradeHill accounts by September 15th 2011.

As usual, if you have any queries or concerns, please send us an email to info@tradehill.com.

Best regards,
TradeHill Team

Did you install the curses dependency mentioned in the README?

sudo apt-get install libncurses5-dev

Code:
cgminer: Befehl nicht gefunden
(command not found)

Maybe the current directory isn't in your path, try ./cgminer ?

Well, you could download the pre-built binary version from the cgminer thread instead:

http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=28402.0

If you still want to try building from git, you'll need the curses dependency as well:

sudo apt-get install libncurses5-dev

Then just follow the build instructions in the README. It's good to know how to do this, as cgminer is under active development, and you can get early access to new features from git. But the pre-built binary is obviously easier.

Good luck  Wink

If you're trying to build from git following the README, you'll probably need some dependencies:

sudo apt-get install autoconf automake libcurl4-openssl-dev

There's no point mining with that desktop either, take a look at similar hardware in the mining hardware comparison posted earlier, you'd be lucky to pull 2Mhash/s with the GeForce 9200. You might do a little better with the CPU, but you won't even make back what the extra electricity costs you.

Why don't you install a miner, sign up to a pool and see what hashrate you actually get? It'll only cost you a bit of time, the energy cost will be tiny if you only run it for an hour or two and you'll learn a fair bit along the way.

If you're still keen after that, brand new Radeon 5850's are still available in Australia for around AUD170 that will give you 350 to 400 Mhash/s. That would be a pretty decent upgrade to your desktop, and would likely still be marginally profitable even at Australian electricity prices (say ~AUD0.22/KWh if you're on an average plan).

Firstly, don't pay for mining software, there's plenty of good, free options available:

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Category:Miners

Personally, I use cgminer.

Secondly, even if you do swap to an ATI GPU as suggested, I'd think hard about whether to mine at all on a laptop. Unless it has some excellent cooling, heat will be a major issue. If this is your primary PC, think hard about what that might do to the expected lifespan of the laptop vs the likely reward (pretty small for a single GPU at the current difficulty).

If you do end up doing it anyway, I'd probably run it without the battery while you're mining as it will only hurt your energy efficiency, and the extra heat will degrade it more quickly.
