Re: [Random] Whats with all the alt coins?

Altcoins are currently a get rich quick scheme: the early adopters (and presumably also the creators) are able to mine significant amounts of coin. Whether the difficult increment makes it unfair or not, these early adopters will get 1'000s if not 10'000s or 100'000s of coins, and if they hoard them all will then hold significations shares of total coin in circulation. Then they do their best to raise interest in the coin, find people willing to pay for them (with BTC, LTC, etc.) and finally, if the coin gains enough popularity, dump their coin on an exchange like BTC-e. Some savvy traders were able to make a bit of money this way with Feathercoin and Chinacoin: both started selling artificially high when the exchange first started trading them. If you're able to conclude the first sell orders, you're then able to dump 1'000s of those altcoins (that took you a few hours to mine) for several $100 worth of BTC.

Just someone compile the qt and Upload it, everybody will join that premined (by some users here) coin

Just compile it if you wan't. It's not like compiling it is rocket science

Rocket science is relatively simple for a rocket scientist. But many people are not, and they don't know where to look for the rocket science manual.

Re: [HELP and MORE]How to make a new Alt-coin, Important parts!

Making it easier for people to create alt-coins is just going to increase the likelihood of scammers flooding these forums with virus, keylogger, etc. infested software masquerading as the new revolutionary altcoin that might make 1-2 people rich, will get the trolls in a frenzy and generally annoy everybody else. If you are, on the other hand both intelligent and dedicated (prerequisites for creating some quality and useful software) then you don't need that kind of assistance.

Except: we have very recent prices to go by, beyond $266 yes you would be right to be very cautious, up to then we have history.

I don't think that figure is at all reliable! It was a bubble, and that always happens in bubbles. If we look back to 2011, the price inflated to USD 30 before dropping back down to USD 10. Then it took almost a year for it to climb back up.

Isn't it kinda irresponsible to keep a thread like this full of dangerous links that allow the hackers to get their hands on all the innocent and naive noobs who visit this site?

Re: Incredibly silly questions by a newbie (regarding Bitcoin-Qt)
by

Hello,

I have just downloaded Bitcoin-Qt and have a few questions. It would be extreemely kind of you if you could tell me:

1. where I can find the private key? I found the 34 character address (for receiving the money), but can't find the private key corresponding with this address (for sending the money). Will I find this key after I click:
a) File-Backup Wallet
b) Encrypt Wallet
c) Export?

2. should the whole Bitcoin-Qt application be placed in an TrueCrypt encrypted drive or just the wallet.dat file should be placed in this encrypted drive?

3. is there a manual of Bitcoin-Qt for non-geeks available?

Thank you

Go to the bitcoin wiki at: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Main_Page It has most of the necessary information to answer your questions. I'm not sure that there is any simple user-friendly way to access your private key through Bitcoin-Qt.
This can be done with Armory though. If you decide to install Armory on a computer (or OS) that remains offline you can run it in Offline mode, and will be able to print out your private key.
-If you haven't already, use the built-in encryption in Bitcoin-Qt to encrypt your wallet. If you want you can put the Wallet.dat file in a Truecrypt volume. This is the only file that matters.
Remember that in theory these steps may be rendered void if your computer is infected.

Bruteforcing may be an option...if you have a supercomputer. if not, try to remember fractions of it. I hope you did not simply copy & paste the pw every time.

If it is lost: lesson learned

Hehe, my password must be bruteforceproof, atleast for the 21st century. 384 bits entropy.

Bitstamp works well and doesn't require any kind of identity verification. Instead of waiting 5 weeks to get verified on Mt.Gox I was able to send a SEPA transfer in under 24 hours on Bitstamp.
