Re: Is it possible to run an Antminer S3 and Desktop PC on the same PSU
by

on 30/09/2015, 08:02:26 UTC
It depends what you will be doing with the PC. The wattage you specify for the components are all max draws. You will need to be mining monero on the CPU, an altcoin on the vid card, and torrenting terabytes of data a month to start to draw that kind of power.

But do note, the components will surge when booting up from cold. However, the S3 will not draw 300+ W immediately when turning on because it will be initializing its runtime and waiting to receive work if mining a pool.

While you definitely can do it, keep in mind that PSUs are most efficient on 50-70% load. And if it is a cheap PSU, working it at 90%+ will wear it out a bit faster.

yes the volume is crazy. no IPO is worth that much BTCs

I've followed some of the development discussion and they have a good team actively working on the problems.

I am guessing we are seeing one or several large investors funding further development through guise of this coin.  They had already received millions to start development and probably had agreed to appropriating a certain % of ETH when it was released.  However, additional funding was probably done this way (one would only have to inspect the blockchain) to allow for additional media attention.  Transactions involving millions of dollars is not really news.  However, conducting a transaction of this size via BTC would definitely be news and bring additional awareness of Ethereum to public.

People seeing transactions size and frequency increasing in BTC is good for everyone, especially storage drive manufacturers.

Re: If ethereum becomes too expensive it fails
by

on 26/07/2014, 06:48:12 UTC
I was reading the disclaimer and they said the network could be instable and businesses could be forced to stop operating if eth becomes too expensive. My question is: how can it go to the moon then? Isn't that like btc would stop working once it's more expensive than 2k$ or something? Isn't it kind of guaranteed then to fail? I mean, don't we know the rampant speculation around here?
Guys, you can't speculate on eth because if you do it fails!

I know nobody will listen, then isn't it already nailed it will fail?

edit:
copy of TOS:

"19.15 Risk of Rapid Adoption and Insufficiency of Computational Application Processing Power on the Ethereum Network

If the Ethereum Platform is rapidly adopted, the demand for transaction processing and distributed application computations could rise dramatically and at a pace that exceeds the rate with which ETH miners can bring online additional mining power. Under such a scenario, the entire Ethereum Platform could become destabilized, due to the increased cost of running distributed applications. In turn, this could dampen interest in the Ethereum Project and ETH.

Insufficiency of computational resources and an associated rise in the price of ETH could result in businesses being unable to acquire scarce computational resources to run their distributed applications. This would represent revenue losses to businesses or worst case, cause businesses to cease operations because such operations have become uneconomical due to distortions in the crypto-economy."

My question is: how can it go to the moon then?

Why should it?  The purpose is not to make people money.  The purpose is to allow people to make smart contracts.  However, people are opportunistic and some will risk that people will value ETH at some arbitrary value.  The opportunistic people are called investors and Ethereum, like many startups are relying on them since no one would get anything if Ethereum developers stop developing.  They still need money right now so Ethereum team is speculating people will speculate and they can continue to pay rent/food/etc.  We are using abstract objects to come to agreement.  If people do not think it is worth it to trade X for ETH, they will not trade.  Thus ETH is valued less until someone values it.

Isn't that like btc would stop working once it's more expensive than 2k$ or something?

If you consider almost 1 billion people make less than $1.00 USA dollar a day, bitcoins are already out of the reach of many, as a person would require technology to own BTC and they can barely afford food and the network continues to work as many businesses conducting billions of dollars worth of transactions a year continually begin accepting it.  However, even when 1 btc = $100k, bitcoin would continue to work as each bitcoin can be subdivided into 100 million units.

Guys, you can't speculate on eth because if you do it fails!

Speculation leads to failure all the time as speculation is the assumption of risk.
For instance, 1 person could have bought 90% of ETH so far.  However, if you consider they fall ill in the next 6 months and die without leaving record of their identity or their purchase to their heirs, that 90% would forever lay unclaimed, and those that bought the other 10% would probably had made a wise decision to assume that risk.
All sorts of scenarios can occur.  It's up to each individual to decide whether the assumed risk is acceptable for the assumed reward.  Their disclaimer is educating people about the product.  This is the opposite of the definition of scam.  A scam would want to minimize potential risks so you only focus on the reward to hype their product.  Additionally, the terms are obvious to anyone who understands the product; execution of smart contracts would be non-economical for many developers so they may not utilize the service, thus working against your speculation and the temporary "failure" of that investment.

Understand as well, some people will toss 1 BTC for no profit motive, but because they want development to continue.

if eth price becomes too high the system fails. written in those TOS you didn't have the time to read.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=710458.msg8026322#msg8026322

FUD.  The system won't fail.

What they are cautioning is that if hype is too great, usage of the network to execute a smart contract may not be economical.  In that sense, the economical model will "fail".  This happens all the time in markets around the world everyday.  People handling their purchase as an investment means they speculated others would be willing to pay more to use it (get it from them).  However, if the execution of contracts are too expensive for X application, the developer will not be able to afford it.  And will not use.  If enough devs do not build contracts to utilize this new system speculator will realize they overpaid, so they decide to lower their sale price.  Enough sellers "giving in" to the buyer's ask price evokes an emotive response and people panic.  That same developer looking to use the network looks at it again and says woah, it will probably cost $800/year to run my app on it. So he buys 5 years worth of "coins" because it is now cheap.  In this case, developer got a deal they found fair and speculator helped sustain early development.  Or maybe dev who wanted to use it thought original asking price was fair and speculator made a good bet.  That's why it is called speculating and not investing, you are trying to value something very difficult to quantify and trusting a group of people to achieve a goal.

The warning in the terms of service is akin to the warning on bleach and other cleaning products cautioning you not to ingest.  It's obvious to those that understand the product.  And for those that do not understand the product, they are offering full disclosure which I would consider the complete opposite of a scam.

Note: after writing this I realized the gay sex part was your photoshop, I found it amusing, I really have no clue what Jim Carrey movie it comes from (if that is him at all).  I have a sick sense of humor, again, aspies thing did not offend me at all.   A lot of time but the coin wars crap I'm very over is all and your posts seemed mostly to be stemming from that.   Anyfuck, blah blah blah, go Vericoin!

Gay sex part was not his photoshop.  It is an actual screenshot from film I Love You Philip Morris (2009) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1045772/
Actors are Jim Carrey (background) and some lucky guy (foreground)
The coin "tattoos" were edited parts.

Dialog for scene is:
"Carrey": Oh, I'm gonna cum...I'm gonna cum!
"Lucky guy": Do it man! Cum in my ass!
"Carrey": Ohhh...

"As Ewan [McGregor] said, 'When you're kissing another guy it can get a little prickly.' Actually, you had to put out of your mind your own sexual preference and just try to understand that you were loving another person who just happens to be a guy.” – Jim Carrey on his sex scenes with Ewan McGregor in “I Love You Phillip Morris”

Re: Pandacoin (PND) - 2 days til POS [Multipool | NO PREMINE | NO IPO | Scrypt | KGW]
by

on 19/05/2014, 20:04:35 UTC
so I have a POS mining question

I bought mintcoin awhile ago and then I loaded my wallet and unlocked it and such and for some reason when I opened it a few weeks ago my income never went up.

So if I want to POS mine my coins, do I need to keep the wallet open at all times? ie- if I want to POS pandacoin I need to leave my computer on, with the wallet open for the next 2 years sorta dealeo?

Thanks.
Yes.
This is necessary, because you still secure the network, validating transactions. So it is different from mining because you don't share enormous amounts of hashpower, but by keeping the wallet on, you still contribute to the background crytpwork.

Ah ok, wish I knew this. I've been missing out on thousands of Mintcoins then by not having it open. Damn....

You haven't missed out on any.

PoS will be generated after at least 20 days holding of the coins in your wallet. You don’t need to keep the wallet open all the time. The coin-days accumulated in your wallet will not be lost. The next time when you open the wallet client, the internal miner will start automatically and if the coin holding period meet certain requirements the pos blocks will be generated based on the coin-days in your wallet.

Re: Curecoin Launch is T minus 5-7 days. The new crypto 3.0 PRE ANN
by
aguy
on 04/05/2014, 10:31:01 UTC
SHA? I suppose you have got ASIC and realised that you are too late for BTC, right? Good bye.

That's what I think.  I was initially really excited for CureCoin because I anticipated it being something like PrimeCoin or RieCoin.  But since the random hashing is not able to be useful to the project, it is just feeding off processing power that could have gone to the project.

Since it is being mined by SHA, this will only enrich a few.  I assume the payout will be proportional to your "coin" value F@H already gives you for the metric of work you accomplish.  I've been receiving these useless "coins" for over 10 years now.  It was always about the thrill of computationally trying to guesswork what would happen if a protein decided to "fold" a certain way rather than another way.

This coin just confuses people and dilutes the market share even further.  Ignorant will mine thinking they are somehow benefiting medicine.  The regular user cannot mine if it is SHA.  Mine Primecoin or Riecoin if you want to benefit medicine and donate a share of your profits.  The processes of protein folding are incredibly mathematical.

Also, you are going to launch now?!  When your website has been done for a couple weeks?
This was being planned for release back in August of 2013 at least.  Why release when nothing is ready now and risk hurting the coin even further?

someone wants to make a game.. yet from all i can read from the review is just a money grab from investors..

ill wait to see a demo version before even believing its real

Thus, we chose this model, where we offer a percentage of the game equity to our backers, transforming the crowd-funding into an investment opportunity. Once the game is done, they will share on the profits (in the form of public monthly BTC dividends) and it is always in everyone's best interest to spread the word. The more people you tell about the game, the more likely your investment will yield great returns.

It's real.  Demo version is already done.  You can play it online for free.

My wallet wont sync. stuck at 156529 help

You can start USDe.exe with the argument -rescan

On Windows you can do this via

Winkey+r > C:\path\to\usde.exe -rescan > [Enter/OK]
  OR
Create a shortcut of usde.exe > Right-click on shortcut > Properties > in Target: append " -rescan" without quotes

(Tip: rename the shortcut to "Fix USDe sync issues" or something like that, and you can click this icon if it ever happens again)

If that doesn't work, just delete the blockchain files and redownload.
Close USDe.exe
Go to your data directory and delete the database folder, blkindex.dat and blk0001.dat files.
If you still have issues, you should delete peers.dat as well
By default you can get there by doing: Winkey+r > %appdata%\usde > [Enter/OK]

(Tip: your wallet.dat file is also here.  Be sure NOT to delete it!  Back it up!)

What's with blocks mined in estimated ~50% after PoW? They disappear?

50% of the blocks are being mined by PoW.

The other 50% get mined by PoS.  PoS type coins are generated from coins already created.

1st year is 100% (to help prevent selling immediately after PoW) so 1 year from now, 1 coins becomes 2 coins.
This is really high.  Most new PoS coins with brief PoW periods get dumped so the 100% is meant to prevent this.

2nd year and thereafter is 2%, so each coin you have becomes 1.02.

This is blatant copyright infringement.  You should not launch this as-is or you will risk legal action if the coin ever is worth much ... actually, with a current IPO, you already risk legal action.

The artwork cannot be played off as artistic license.  You are using a similar slogan and likeness to derive a profit.  I would HIGHLY recommend you postpone launch and wipe all association to the popular Netflix series.

[edit]

I talked with the "House" and they have determined it is far enough from any likeness of any existing Netflix series and the artwork was created by an independent artist to which they have license to use.

If Netflix did have a problem with it, it was determined no name change would be required, but just removing the image.

is there a timer on the block halving? when it will happen? Also wasnt there a multipool annc coming?

"Timer" is built into network.  The last 5000 coin reward is whomever finds block 34,750.  Blocks after that are rewarded with 2,500 coins for each found block until the next halving, and so on...

Blocks are targeted to be solved every 2 minutes.  Regardless if there is 100 terahashes, or 100 kilohashes per second on the network in total.

Multipool is in beta and not currently open to the public.  They are hoping to open it on Saturaday to those who applied to the pool via email.

What are my options for a refund?  I paid with BTC, but with the exchange rate being what it is, I wouldn't want BTC in return unless it was equivalent USD value.

So if BTC had soared in value, you would demand nothing else than to be refunded in BTC?
