Alternative solution is to reject free market capitalism entirely and switch to the planned economy.

That's probably plausible but any sane person/people should reject this. Capitalistic societies move the world forward.

So, what will help solve poverty (it won't solve inequality, but actual poverty) is a greater and more even spread of the capital available to workers. What can help this? Globalization.

Sure, if we're looking to go from 1 to 1. What about 1 to n? What's going to be post-globalization?

I think if you really thought about moving humanity beyond 'poverty', you need 1 to n.

This reminds me of how travel became the first real category (excluding media) where folks were willing to use the Internet to pay for something tangible. It could definitely have a positive effect on the adoption but then again, we will need to wait for others to follow suit before we can judge.

For what it's worth, I hope Scotland stay.  They're the only ones with any sense around here who don't vote for the Tories.  If Scotland go, the rest of the UK is pretty much guaranteed to have a disgusting bunch of leeching Tory scum at the helm for the rest of forever.  One term has been horrific enough and it's not even over yet.   Sad

As someone born in Scotland, I hope we stay also. There isn't enough time to explain why Independence is such a bad idea but hopefully after September, we won't need to think about it any longer either way.

I am about to finish a masters degree in business administration from UK and thinking to work in USA? Can anybody guide me right to the current employment conditions in the country? Few years back, companies in the country were laying off employees.. Is that still continuing ?
Holding a masters degree will help but realistically, you're best route is to work for a US based multinational company and get them to sponsor a visa in the US for you. The other way is to do a masters degree in the US but unless you want to do another master i.e an MBA, that route is closed to you.

Alternatively, you could start a company in the UK and open an office (i.e invest) in the US - there are specific investor visa's available though the capital you need to invest would be significant.

Bitcoin has grown because it has less rules and thus easier to set up and use than credit and debit cards.

Hmm, yes and no. Whilst some folks might have bad credit history, the actual process of getting a credit card is not surprisingly very easy.

What would surprise me is if the big credit card co's e.g Visa, Mastercard etc embrace Bitcoin - it's a direct threat to their business not to mention i-banks.

Yes College is good, but not all the people need it!

Summed up perfectly. It's something that you should do if you're interested but not forced upon you.

Graduate school is broken in this respect at the moment i.e folks go to get the salary and not because they're passionate about the subject matter.

Re: Fraud accounts for almost $3 Trillion dollars a year in losses

Fraud is an area severely under-appreciated and crucially under-funded. I think folks probably thought the banks/paypal solved the fraud problem but in reality as we know, it's pretty rampant everywhere. I think there's space for a few enormous anti-fraud companies on the scale of Symantec for example in different areas of security. It's an area I think that hasn't seen innovation in terms of the business model since McAfee and anti-virus first appeared.

Utopia is not something that is achievable. The world will never be perfect.

But we've achieved so many things that used to be considered the hallmarks of an impossible Utopia.  Do you realize that less than one person out of ten thousand dies of homicide now? Less than one out of fifteen hundred of starvation?  Nearly all of our children survive to adulthood! That's incredible!  Or at least it would have been back when the word was coined.

If you'd told Thomas Moore that we'd come this far, he'd have declared it impossible and dismissed you as a dreamer.  He'd have said it was impossible, for reasons of economics and human nature, and according to all that was known of economics and human nature at the time, there'd be no reason to say otherwise.

Who knows what dreams may become possible -- or be achieved -- in the next few hundred years?

This is a optimistic view for sure, one could argue that we've stalled (except maybe China) in the last thirty years or so. I think there needs to be a broad-scale restart of the global economy in the near future before we see progress accelerated. The kinds of projects to restart the system aka a globalized world - probably need to be huge in scale i.e space colonization or at least serious energy innovation here on earth.

Based on these facts, I would say that wealth redistribution is an accidental side effect of tax policy in current societies.  The main main function of tax is to raise money to keep the market system running smoothly.

That's a valid point and one folks often forget despite my own opinion that taxes should be as minimal as possible.

Not sure if he was misquoted on this one. It's also strange in a way for him to comment when normally he refuses to do so on matters he doesn't understand.

Sealand is not listed.  Angry

Wish I could say Sealand rather than UK. I do think it's time, especially with some of the conflict we have today over borders, about nations. People should be free to choose their own boundaries and govern themselves, anyone should really be permitted to start a country like Sealand.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I'm think as I want to get v1 of the app out, I'll launch without a payment option but I'll definitely add options in subsequent releases. Hopefully we get more awareness of Bitcoin and acceptance which should make it the most popular way to pay.

Welcome. Not sure about default, more like one of the payment methods.

Yeah, I was thinking the same. I think when Coinbase and other wallets become more accepted and grow in terms of user base it would be a good time to add the functionality.

There are some plugins for wordpress and some carts that are compatible with bitcoin! But more user friendly apps are needed.

I think from a developer's perspective it's pretty well documented - I was more concerned about the user. The app I am building is an iOS app so I guess as long as folks are getting BTC wallets i.e Coinbase that are consumer friendly then maybe there's a way to integrate them into my UX.

I can always wait and add BTC integration at a later stage when it becomes more mainstream.

Re: Decentralized poker

I doubt it would be possible. Using a hash function, you could keep track of whether someone has the cards they claimed to have before revealing them (similar in design to provably fair Bitcoin gambling sites), but I doubt there's a fair, trustless way to deal a deck of cards electronically.
Sheldon Adelson would agree with you - he's trying to get everyone to forget online gaming for the real thing. I'd imagine it's technically possible, given the amount of money/brans in the online gaming space now. Legally, that's another issue...
Fair online gambling is absolutely possible, I'm just not sure about poker between multiple people.

I guess the question regarding fairness involves minors and how one prevents them from playing online poker. (that's the debate right?)

Facebook has connections to the CIA. So stop the hypocrisy.

Is this not hypocrisy in itself though? How could a database of nearly every US citizen not be connected to the CIA?

I think Zuckerberg is actually quite inspiring - he's clearly still doing FB because he believes the mission otherwise he'd be living on or near a beach right now.

Marketplace App - Accept Bitcoin?
by
am
on 14/03/2014, 09:13:44 UTC
Hi all,

I'm working on an mobile app that will enable folks to sell anything they want. My question is around payment; I was planning to forgo typical payment guys (Paypal, Stripe etc) and allow any payment method e.g cash. However, after following the rise of BTC, should I accept it? Has anyone developed a marketplace app that accepts it? If so, it it being adopted by a large number of folks?

My concerns evolve around the fact folks (i.e the masses) have been trained to use Paypal, Credit Cards for so long that they'd find BTC too complex.
