That's actually a teaser clip from the next episode - I needed to post it for I could get a response from a guy who is currently going through the hurdles to start an exchange, and figured might as well release it on the stream.
Nice podcast enjoyed it a lot

Re: Physical Bitcoins

I often see physical Bitcoins pictured in various news articles and blog posts. They don't always look the same, sometimes they look all-metal, sometimes they appear to have a hologram image. I was wondering, what the heck are they showing pictures of? Are there physical Bitcoins (even if they are just for show)? Or is everything I'm seeing just good 3D renderings?

There are indeed physical bitcoins. There are different shells for different values. And I believe there has been a couple of style changes too along the way.

The originals are by Casascius

It's a metal coin, and on one side has a holographic seal to prove it hasn't been opened. Inside is an encrypted shorthand key that can be used to withdraw the value of the coin from the network into your wallet, a specialised utility is required to do so.

Recently, there have been tools released to allow anybody to forge their own physical bitcoins and upload values into the network, so there might be completely new styles coming out later.

These physical coins could become very valuable collectors items in the future, even today they are worth much more than their BTC digital value.

I see what your saying, there may be commercial use for it as the general public may enjoy having something they can physically hold and touch, for me im fine with just virtual  Cheesy

Re: Saving Bitcoin to USB for security purposes.

Is this too simple? What am I missing here?
Why cant you just send your bitcoins to your wallet on your computer. Backup the wallet.dat to a usb stick. Close the bitcoin wallet. Delete the wallet.dat from your computer. Restart bitcoin wallet so it creates a new fresh wallet with no bitcoins. Unplug USB containing your bitcoins.

Doesn't this make your bitcoins completely inaccessible to everyone except the person holding the usb drive?

No, it isn't "too simple". It's just simple enough.  You aren't missing much.  And, yes, generally, that would make your bitcoins completely inaccessible to everyone except the person holding the USB drive.

As long as you don't lose the USB stick, nobody else gets access to the USB stick, and the USB stick still works when you want to recover the bitcoins, your plan will work fine.  To increase your faith in the plan, perhaps try it once with a small amount of bitcoin.

Concerns to be aware of:

If your computer is already hacked, has a key logger, or any other bitcoin aware malware, then it is possible that the information from the wallet.dat will be stolen before it ever gets to the USB stick.  Then in the future the thief can steal any bitcoins you send to those wallet addresses even though the USB stick isn't plugged in.

If the delete leaves the wallet.dat recoverable somewhere on the hard drive, then in the future someone could still access your bitcoins if they find the contents.

If your computer is compromised when you try to restore the wallet.dat from the USB stick, a thief could steal the bitcoins before you get your wallet running.

This newbie forum concept is ridiculous also. So annoying. What are chances of getting a real reply here?

Zero.

That's just silly.  There are several SMEs that review and reply to the posts in the Newbie Forum every day.

Re: how to buy BTC in person

You'll have to decide for yourself how many confirmations to wait for.

When the seller is willing to use the localbitcoins.com transaction service, there is no need to wait for any confirmations at all, but that service costs the seller 1% of the transaction amount. If the seller is in a hurry and doesn't want to wait for the number of confirmations you need to feel secure, suggest that they cover the cost and use the transaction service.  That allows them to buy the ability to leave quickly after the transaction.

For amounts less than $20, I'm almost always willing to accept with 0 confirmations.
For amounts less than $200, I'm almost always willing to accept with 1 confirmation.
For amounts less than $2000, I'm almost always willing to accept with 3 confirmations.
I don't think I'd personally be concerned about waiting for 6 confirmations in a face-to-face exchange unless the amount was over $10,000.

That's my personal choice though.  A zero confirmation transaction is pretty risky, but it would take some significant technical knowledge, to pull off a scam after 1 confirmation, especially if you verify that confirmation from multiple sources (your wallet, blockchain.info, and blockexplorer.com).

The only concern I've had so far in a face-to-face transaction was when someone tried to look over my shoulder as I typed in my wallet password.  I don't think they were trying to memorize the password (which would've been extremely difficult for them anyhow), I think they were just naturally curious about what I was doing on my computer, but as soon as they left, I changed the password anyhow, just in case.

I've had a similiar situation with some random person  looking over my shoulder just as I was entering my password. I asked him kindly to look away, and later changed my password just to make sure  Grin

Yea time varies greatly for transaction speed. On the larger end transactions you can wait more then an hour.
