I would be looking forward to see a truly ASIC/FPGA defeating algorithm emerge. The majority of the current mining population probably does not care about such a development, but there are still good reasons to do this. We would stop losing mining efficiency to people using specialized hardware, which is expensive and botnets, however nasty, are still very cheap and possibly accessible to many and they would still be competing with cloud miners for a possible 51% attack. This could be an important step towards creating a coin which does not favor the big player and does not create a huge barrier for an idividual to start mining on basically any machine.

plus it can be sent over the wire, "packed", "minified", eval'ed at will, etc... no idea why trying to reinvent the wheel Grin

PS: I would greatly benefit from it, since JS is my main coding language Cheesy

I think this mostly comes down to the fact that Java and its miscreants are the Devil.

And still anyone with the skills could implement a javascript client. If ethereum really breaks through there will be a lot of opportunity for new development. I think its a good thing to see there are already multiple prototype clients in multiple languages.

Has anyone addressed the security of having a Turing complete foundation? Turing complete means that Ethereum contracts will likely be absolutely loaded with common and proprietary viruses, keyloggers, malware, adware, and a slew of other bad things. I am willing to bet my bank account that in a few short months people will be crying about how they got all their wallets/currency stolen, or their computers are now running slow, or how they blue screen every few minutes after a reboot.

If you want an example of how Turing complete works, load up a peer to peer sharing program and download a bunch of .MOV files and run them. I GUARANTEE that you will get a virus. That's because Quicktime movie files are Turing complete. This is why mkv, mpeg, mpg and avi, while not impervious, are much much safer to download. If you want to invest, mine, and run contracts at the risk of losing everything then go ahead. We will never know for sure how secure Ether is going to be until post release, so asking for money without proof of security is another red flag.

I too would like to know this. Turing complete is dangerous and highly insecure.

You are calling every turing complete programming language out there dangerous and highly insecure. You do not seem to know what you are talking about.

No I am not, I am talking within the context of a currency backed by people's hard earned money. Do not put words in my mouth. Hackers are already willing to inject malicious software into non monetary applications, I can only imagine what they would come up with if they found an application that is Turing complete, is used to handle millions of dollars, and thanks to the anonymity of crypto, have no chance of being caught. You are diffusing a valid question with irrelevant and illogical retorts. I'd like a short summary of the methods used to prevent people from doing this. What systems are in place to increase security for the end user?

So far as I can tell the security is based on the blockchain and the POW that will be used in roughly the same way bitcoin does this. The big difference is that ethereum scripts are more powerful. I dont see a reason why this introduces new security considerations, but it is certainly a valid point to consider. And still I say this based on my understanding of the model of ethereum and not on the implementation.

It's horse shit to believe keyloggers or viruses will be loaded onto ethereum. The running of a contract does not affect the local system except for the ethereum node.

Charles said: "If someone codes a Proof of Stake sub-currency then people can use Ether to buy that sub-currency." <- BTC could be used to buy in with the POS currency as well. In which way is the POS currency in this example tight to Ethereum? How do the contracts come in play here?

This is because a new currency is instantiated through a contract on the ethereum blockchain if i am not mistaken. The details of some contract implementations are in the whitepaper.

Well, logically, one cannot prove or disprove the existence of god. I have come to believe that life could be a test of each person's compassion. Man's intelligence would be meaningless to someone who created the building blocks of physical matter.

It's a game. When you die you get to choose a new character or ghosthack metaphysically for a while. Nothing spectacular.

People dont want to be told theres something out there thats better than they have now and they dont understand it. You know what happened to Bruno, Galilei and Tesla? Better leave them alone, they will pick it up once they cant ignore it anymore.

How can I import the private key as displayed on brainwallet.org through the debug window of memorycoin-qt or memorycoind importprivkey rpc call? Do I have to convert first to import a DER-encoded private key? I keep getting errors or segmentation faults.

Modify: Nevermind, i got it. I should just use the private key field.

I couldnt find this one on git: http://pastebin.com/p2eHL6qU

Just happened to me after armory has been running for 2-3 days.

Do you have a lot of addresses in Armory?  This frequently occurs when Armory hits the 10-20 sec timeout during an operation... it happens most frequently when there is network burp, or you have 10k+ addresses and it's trying to update all of them after a new block comes in.  If it's an address problem, we'll have a fix for it soon ... the 0.91-dev branch already has updates that make Armory operate much better with 50k+ addresses, though there's still more work to do.

I have 3 addresses right now. I don't think this is a problem. Might it be that it happened when I accidentally pulled my network cable out.
