Re: Resizing cgminer window
by

Searching is fruitless, I've found. I want to make my cgminer window larger as the number of cards I have cuts off information. I've seen screenshots of larger windows and I'd like that, too.

Kind of off topic but how did you get that epic address in your signature?

If you're on windows and launching the command prompt, you can right click the title bar, select properties, and in the "Layout" tab alter the screen buffer size (line width and scroll history) and the window size (viewport size).

There are ways to launch cmd.exe by passing parameters to it for things like colors.  It seems like I used to make a shortcut for a cmd window that came up resized and spiffily-colored, but I don't recall.  I use Linux now so it's been a while since I cared how Windows cmd works.  I have to use it still, but I don't spend enough time to customize it.

HTH.

Thanks for the tip. But then this happens: The window is larger but cgminer prints to the same area. I want to be able to see all the information that is cut off.

Help enabling Wake on Lan on my Miner?
by
autonomous42
on 13/06/2013, 04:38:57 UTC
I know this isn't necessarily Bitcoin related but I need help making Wake on LAN work so I can power my miner from afar should it turn off.

Here's what I've already done:

1) Forwarded ports 9 and 7 on my router. Both TCP and UDP.
2) Set Windows to allow the computer to be woken up.
3) Enabled Wake on Lan in my BIOS/UEFI
4) I'm using a wired connection

What am I missing? Every time I send a magic packet, nothing happens.

The motherboard is an Asrock 970 Extreme4, I'm using its onboard NIC which is a Realtek RTL8167 and my router is a Linksys EA2700. The guide I used is here: http://windows7-issues.blogspot.com/2011/03/wake-on-lan-wol-for-windows-7-made-easy.html

How often should my account page on slushs website be updating itself to reflect the work my miners are doing?
I'm watching my GUIminer and my workers are acccepting shares literally every single minute, but on slushs website it says the time since last share for my worker is 1 hour and like 12 minutes. WTF.

Why is the website not updating the shares my workers are finding and therefore not updating my score and therefore not updating my reward?

Should it be updating every time a worker accepts a share?

Yes. You should be using stratum.bitcoin.cz:3333 if you aren't already.

Yes, I think we could all use some hugs. Even from ourselves.

I'm going to be living in another country for a while, but my miner will be sitting in my vacant room AC on full blast and a ceiling fan 24/7. My bitcoin partner will be keeping a virtual eye on things but it's important we get to 99.9% uptime. Oh let me not forget to mention I don't pay for electricity or cooling and my cards are all under 70C.

It happened to me recently, too. I'm trying to sort it out but you can try this: http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/catalyst-uninstall-utility.aspx It will remove all traces of the driver and then you can reinstall. You can also try a different kernel.

Did you look around for the version 12.8 drivers? Those seem to be the best to mine with.
Not sure about that. For me when a card gets sick all of cgminer crashes resulting in zero mining, but on 13.1 mining continues and the card stays sick (or dead).

Still up for me connecting out of Los Angeles.
I'm on the eastern side of the US using cgminer 3.1.1 and it's not connecting here.  Sad
NYC and submitting just fine.

Hmm.

That setup looks a little dangerous...
I think there should be a safety warning somewhere in your OP.
Thanks, I've done that now. I'm not going to re-take the picture, however, because I've since given the multimeter back to my friend.

Please, everyone: if you try this be careful! I wore rubber gloves and stood back while the power was reestablished.

I know this topic has been discussed before, but I would like some further clarification in discussion. I recently upgraded my hashing power from 160Mhash/s to 1.3Ghash/s. I found my network traffic was about 10Mb/h before, and since I will be hashing much faster now and I don't want to be consuming almost 10 times the bandwidth. Is it usefull to turn up my difficulty? Should I expect loss from turning my difficulty to something like 5? Is it right to assume that the result will then be that I submit shares 1/5 as fast but they are worth 5x as much while the work submitted still occupies the same number of bits as diff 1? I have tried running this difficulty for a few days now and noticed I still catch the >1 minute blocks. Haven't been carefully analyzing the bandwidth though.
10 MB/h? That sounds too high. The stratum protocol was designed to use kilobytes per share. You can try it. You wont lose anything but your Utility will drop because its submitting fewer, more difficult shares. So for every 1 you submit, the pool counts it as 5.

$0 because I am a rare exception and do not pay a utility bill ^_^

Wait till your parents see the next electricity bill once it arrives  Grin
Oh no they don't pay utility either. All power, gas, water, and HVAC is included in rent. Wink

[GUIDE] Want to measure power consumption but don't have a Kill-A-Watt?
by
autonomous42
on 27/05/2013, 06:27:08 UTC
It's easy! (provided you have the supplies)
It's also quick-and-dirty, but it works

All you need are:

An old power cable with the leads stripped
A multimeter
Some alligator clips
Balls of steel (optional)

Disclaimer and warning: This has the potential to be very dangerous as it involves powered, exposed wires. Please be careful and treat any wire like a live one. My table is a bit messy but don't be like me; do this in a clear area. You may also want to try wrapping all exposed contacts with electrical tape for safety and peace of mind. If possible, set up the circuit on an independent circuit breaker/fuse so you can disable the wall power while assembling. If you are unsure of your abilities, do not try this at home. I nor these instructions are to be held liable for personal injury or damage to your multimeter or mining rig. If safety precautions and common sense are followed, this method will provide a quick reading of your unit's power consumption.

1. Attach one alligator clip to one lead of the disembodied power cable
2. Attach clips to your multimeter leads
3. Turn off miner
4. We are testing for the current (Amperes) the unit draws on the mains so the multimeter must be in series in the circuit we're making
5. Clip one multimeter lead on to the exposed cable wire and clip the other on to one of the PSU's prongs
6. Clip the alligator on the other cable on to the other prong
6a. Ensure no unintended contact is made between clips, wires, or leads.
7. Set your multimeter to AC Amps (provided it can measure ≥10 A)
8. Plug in the old power cable and turn on your mining machine
9. Let the gears turn for a bit and read the Amperage. Multiply your Amps by your Volts to get Watts. For me, 4.85 * ~116 ≈ 562.6 W. I like that estimate because it includes some overhead. For a more accurate calculation, multiply the Watts by your PSU's efficiency (90% in my case): 526.6 * .9 = 473.94 W
10. Buy a new card (optional)

How do blocks of exactly 25.00000000 BTC and no transactions happen?

The miner doesn't include transactions, and just collects the rewards.
On what basis does that happen? Not knowing anything about bitcoind or the minutiae of how the mining software or pools work, why would they not take transactions?

PS who renamed the thread and removed the OP? weird.
