Hello all, newbie here--just introduced to the world of bitcoins a few days ago.
I'm very interested in building some sort of rig with a 1K budget. I've been reading many posts, and doin shitloads of research, but I still can't quite understand EXACTLY what i need. Right now I'm running a MacBook Pro i7 2.7ghz 4gb ram.
Now, if i understand correctly, something that would be the most bang for my buck is 4 x 5830. but is this all i need? people speak of purchasing psu's and other equipment. If i just put my 4 x 5830's in a case and plugged em in would it all work?

What's your experience building computers? From what I gather from your post, I'm guessing not much.
In addition to the video cards, you'll need at least a motherboard, processor, memory, power supply, and some sort of data storage to complete a functional PC.
in addition to that you'll need a good case with great airflow management to keep you GPU's relatively cool. If you have very little experience in building PCs it would be probably easier and more profitable for you to buy some coins from btc exchanges and experiment with trading them.
Symantec VIP charge sites thousands, it may be nice but yubikey is just as good and FREE to websites.
So mt gox BETTER have us buy our own from yubikey, no reselling, then use it for FREE on their site.

agree, especially after poor database security they should provide all these services for free to reclaim people's trust, otherwise, I think mtGox will not last long.

Because of some confusion about who should pay the Paypal fees, we are changing our FAQ to reflect the most common situation: now the seller pays the Paypal fees. This is because, when you send money Paypal via Paypal you often don't have a choice besides choosing that seller will pay the fee. It happened to us many times and we have to make it an official rule to avoid more confusion.
Additionally, when buying with Paypal, please don't mention "Bitcoin", "coin", or any other currency-revelant words in your payment description. Please just put the your username/email and transaction ID there.

This pretty much kills paypal as an option for the seller, at least for me. I had about 10 transactions using paypal as a seller so far, and not once did I have a problem with someone who didn't pay the fees. I just included that information in the payment details. If anyone forgot, I would just send the money back and tell the buyer to include the fee, which everyone did so far.
Especially for traders who want to get their money fast, this is a disappointment. bitmarket.eu is still a relatively slow option to get your hands on some coins, and I guess now it's even getting harder because less sellers will accept paypal.
Waiting three days or more for your coins or your money to arrive is just a pain.Besides that: Good work, bitmarket!
This chance is a result of a LOT of emails that we received from sellers complaining that the buyers either don't agree to pay the fees or that they are wasting too much time to explain this to them.

maybe a stupid idea but what about equal parts of fees paid by both parties 50%-50% ?

and i can't find anywhere to buy from (OUT OF STOCK).
Perhaps I should go and buy the ATI Radeon HD 5970? Would that give me the same (+/-) Mhash/sec?

have a look at this website http://bitminer.info/ gives all info about cards, you can see from it that for 5870 and 6990 to pay off is only 0.95 days difference. Is it really worth it to pay $700+ for that GPU then?

Hi. I am new to this whole Bitcoin thing, and I've started mining with my GTX 560 Ti, using the CUDA client via the GUIminer. I am getting roughly 86 Mhash/s.
I have just one question: I just signed up for a donation of 0.01 Bitcoins from the Bitcoin Faucet, and my Bitcoins have yet to appear in my wallet, even though the transaction was initiated hours ago.

i have a 480GTX and my hash rate on that card is like 115-125MH/s. I`m using RPC Miners with this settings:

not cost effective. 480GTX price in the UK £300+ and AMD Radeon 5870 price is £160. 5870 does 414 MH/s with core OC'd to 900MHz

You know, I realize that slapping a GPU into a mobo isn't that tough, but I have to say I'm pretty impressed. Were you at least weaned off of breast milk before you got started?

You could also always opt in for a pair of 5870's lower hash rate but way cheaper then those two. Also Longer you wait less BTC you'll generate as the difficulty keeps going up.
why don't you go for 5970's instead? similar hash rate and less power consumption.

Sigh, so I'll repeat myself: encryption won't do shit, since the file has to be stored decrypted in RAM in order to be actively used. So only a sterile system will guarantee safe interactions with your client.

I read somewere in the forum that bitcoin faucet has dried out. I might be lying though. Btw, Geforce cards will not have a great hashing power. their GPU's are designed to work in a different way. My old Gf8800gt was doing 23Mhash/s only..

Not sure what the need for a livecd is.. can't the client just encrypt your wallet?
Don't think client encryption would be enough though - there will always be a hole in the encryption somewhere.
I'd trust 'em.
don't think Google will touch btc and I would never leave my wallet there. It's enough of information about us that Google keeps anyway.
