Hi,

thanks for your replies, here is my answer to your questions:
1. I'm not sure what year I started but maybe 2014: is there a way I can find out from the address what era does it belong to?
2. I was, am, and will always use Bitcoin Core full node only: i found a way to limit how many GB it keeps of the blockchain so I don't have the problem of disk storage anymore.

I got the confusion when someone said that if you keep using the same address over and over again then your wallet can get hacked. This story came at the same tiem as quatum computing fuss was going on. I always used the same address because it used to get confused between wallet and addrees: i thought they were the same. Now I still don't understand the following:
1. one wallet can have many addresses: i've tested this it's easy to confirm
2. The number of Bitcoins is contained in the Wallet, not in a particular address: not sure?
3. I don't need to create a new wallet.dat, i only need to create a new address in the same wallet.dat: not sure?

Hi i need help please:

1. I used to do my own mining at home but i stopped because my machine was too slow.

2. I bought some cloud mining stuff at this page: https://curecoin.net/shop/

3. I downloaded the wallet, replaced the 0.0 wallet.dat with my old wallet.dat which had my coins from when I was mining at home, I downloaded Folding @home software and put in the same team and info I had before when I was mining locally.

4. I recevied the reply email saying:

"Just to let you know — we've received your order #xxxxx, and it is now being processed"

So: now what? it's been a few days and no further email telling me what to do?

Thanks Pooya

So I don't need to do anything security wise, that's great. Thank you.

What do I need to do to use the new SegWit addresses? I looked in the Send section and it is all still the same: Pay to etc and control over the transaction fee...

Re: What is the driving force of a blockchain?
by

The one and only driving forces for a blockchain is immutable transactions. Additional driving forces apply to BTC including but not limited to it not being deflationary, difficulty adjustment, calculated mining rewards, open ledger.

If you haven't used privacy coins before, i give you an example. Say you want to send Dash to someone, then what you do is this:
1. You send the amount to someone's address

Then

2. You give the transaction ID and the amount.

If the two match then Bob's your uncle.

I don't like privacy coins.

Hi,

I stopped using Bitcoin a few years ago, back then I had the Bitcoin Core wallet so I just backed up my wallet.dat.

I heard / was told that since then the 'old addresses' are not good anymore and I need to do something like get a new address and transfer the coins from the old address to the new address?

Can you please tell me more about this? what i ned to do? I think last BitCoin core i used was 0.16.0 but that was just an update of the software. The wallet itself was created by an earlier version.

Thanks.

Hi All

Thanks for your replies. It worked as follows:
1. I closed the bitcoin wallet
2. I reopened it again, it said i need to rescan and download the full blockchain again
3. It did not do that, it just did a count down in the launch dialog and then when it started the coins were there

Thanks

Wallet.dat not recognized format
by

on 18/02/2021, 08:27:41 UTC
Hi,

I have an old walleet.dat i think created back in the days of wallet 0.16.0

I downloaded bitcoin core 0.21.0 and waited for it to fully synchronize

I then went to the Bitcoin roaming file and put the wallet.dat in there: when i load the Client it does not see the wallet.

I go to Program Files\Bitcoin <-this is the 64 bits wallet, thre is nothing in the x86 folder

I try: bitcoin-qt.exe -rescan  <- same result, wallet not loaded
I try: bitcoin-qt.exe -wallet wallet.dat <- i get an error dialog box saying format not recognized

What am I doing wrong?

Hi,

I have a GPU machine with 8 cards. A few years ago I used it for many things such as LTC and ETH.

These days ETH is going to proof of stake, and I am no longer interested in LTC. So is there any GPU mining out there or it is now only BTC?

I might sell it on eBay.

Thank you.

Re: How to download an Ethereum wallet?
by

on 25/05/2020, 00:03:33 UTC
Hi,

To answer your questions:

Q1: Why not use a browser extension?
A1: Never ever no matter what I will absoultely not use such a thing. The layers of prgramming for a browser extension are so high they expose a mountain of vulnerabilities. Only full node or nothing.

Q2: Why desktop app?
A2: Because I want to get ready for a full node with 32 ETH staking, if and when this happens; and what I need to do: i don't know (yet).

Q3: Why MyCrypto desktop app and not any other?
A3: Because i couldn't find any other, and the only other one I found was MEW and they were reluctant to use the keystores approach.

Q4: Am I sure to have downloaded the right app not a phishing site?
A4: Yes i used my own method to cross-check the site, but the MyCrpto app itself has a way to confirm the key signature. It did not use that method because it is confusing as hell and required me to download even more software that could itself have its own problems. So at the moment I am relying only on the authenticity of the site.

So the only problem at the moment is:
Mist used to behave well, I open and close the app it remembers my wallet.
With MyCrypto: i have to Load the wallet each time I open the app, it does not keep the wallet open.

MyCrypto desktop app is not "remembering" my wall.

1. I click on the MytCrypto shortcut on the desktop
2. I get a screen "How would you like to access your wallet?"
3. I select Keystore File
4. I click Select Wallet and I choose the keystore file I have backed up from the old Mist
5. I enter the password and I see my Account address and balance.

I exit the app.

I start it again, same thing I have to load the wallet every time. In the old Mist it rememebred the wallet, am I doing anything wrong?

Thanks I downloaded the MyCrypto Desktop app and it restored my wallet from the keystore.

So how come MyCrypto can do it similar to the old Mist wallet but MEW winges about Software and like you said it claims it has been dicontinued because it is not secure?

How to download an Ethereum wallet?
by

⭐ Merited by voteformeg (1)
For bitcoin there is Bitcoin Core which downloads the whole blockchain a few hundred gigabytes then you can use the wallet.

For Ethereum, there used to be a wallet. I have done a backup of the key stores but now I am trying to download that classic wallet but I can't find a download link.

The only nearest thing I found was MyEtherWallet (MEW) but then there is no Download button anywhere on their website, and even whien i try the software version it says Not recommended:
https://www.myetherwallet.com/access-my-wallet

Any help how to get access to a wallet using the backup keystores from the "old"/"classic" wallet?

How do you pay tax on this one?
by
benjamin07
on 11/05/2020, 11:45:25 UTC
Hi,

Here is the scenario:

Fiat version
A does $1,000 worth of work for B.
B pays A $1,000.
B registers the $1000 as loss.
A pays income tax on the $1,000.

Btc version
A does $1,000 worth of work for B.
A goes to altcoins market and buys for $1 in fiat 1,000,000 $hitcoin (pick any dead coin you want).
B has no crypto so he goes to exchnage X and buys via credit card $1,000 worth of Bitcoin BTC (say 0.1BTC for example)
Exchange X automatically reports to the IRS that B has aquired so 0.1BTC for $1,000.
B makes the conscious decision to exchange the 0.1 BTC with A because B believes that:
  • If he pays A $1,000 in fiat, then that money is really gone for good.
  • If, in return, he gets 1,000,000 $hitcoins, who knows, one day, to da moon.
  • B can declare to the IRS that the $1,000 he used to buy the 0.1BTC was investment monmey received then reinvested in crypto within 6 months; or B can liquidate the $shitcoins and declare the same loss he would have under the Fiat scenario.
A receives the 0.1BTC and loads it onto a mobile phone wallet and uses this at a coffee shop that accept BTC.
A does not declare anything to the IRS because his BTC is not going back via fiat.

Your educated crrections / comments / teachings / education / clarifications are highly appreciated.

Free $50USD + maybe another $50USD more
by
benjamin07
on 08/05/2020, 11:46:41 UTC
Hi, just sharing this, I did a search before an did not get any results so I'm not sure why are we missing out:

https://platinum.crypto.com/r/5g4vvhvdv9

It is a debit card that takes money from your crypto wallet instgead from your bank account. Historically, people had to sell on an exchnage, withdraw the money to a bank and then use it. Here is is straight forward.

In a nutshell:
1. You open an account using the above link, we both (you and I) each get $50USD in crypto. WAITm there is more.
2. In the account, you can apply for a free Visa card, and when you do, you get another $50USD in crypto (read on the website and in the app and confirm for yourself).
3. The card comes free by DHL to your doorstep ready to use.

A bit more detail:
1. There are various Visa cards available, you can choose the absolultely free Blue one but you might want to consider the "price" of the better cards. The "price" is: you but a certain amount of MCO coins and you stake it for 6 months on their exchnage. That's it. After 6 months the MCOs are back yours. They can be worthless like BitConneeeeeeccctttt wasasasasasas or the MCO can appreciate in value. I signed up because they have been around for a few years now and they appear to make their money from the exchnage fees. The red card comes with free spotify, the green card comes with free spotify, free netflix and free airport lounges, plus you get cash back whenever you use the card.

2. Again: free means they charge your card the USD amount and then credit you back the same in their own coin. Pretty fair: if you really don't want their coin then you can exchnange it back to USD yourself on the same day and hence netflix becomes truly free. But, if you keep your refund in MCO, then you will be providing support for the MCO coin, for when the staking period finishes it is more likely to have maintained its value or appreciated.

3. How to use this card and even make more money is as follows:
3.1. You have to make your supermarket purchases anyway: if on the day you want to make the purchase, the price of MCO is higher than what you bought it for, then buy using the card: you will be getting the groceries cheaper.
3.2. If the price of MCO is lower than when you bought it, then use your fiat/bank card.
3.3. Each time you buy using MCO, you are selling that MCO for currency so you are making capital gains (making gains is good!) If by tax time MCO is still high and you've been making profits, then by all means pay the capital gains tax!
3.4. If at tax time MCO had tanked, from a high during the year, then get rid of some/all MCO and cancel the capital gains: free groceries for while it lasted.

If you have any negative comments on this I'd be very happy to hear. I tried to find something I couldn't, I think they have a sustainable business model if they keep their expenses manageable.

Yes thanks to whoever stopped this scam. Before it went down (on the same day I posted) I checked the wallet address and it appears someone had already sent them 0.1 BTC, poor guy
