I'm totally for keeping CGMiner as simple as possible. I actually wonder if one day you will drop GPU support for strictly ASIC support. However, the higher performance of native cuda seems to be pushing the cards into the realm of slightly profitable. A 580 seems to push 280KH/s, which is about $1.25/day profit.

I'm curious as to what miner this would be where they were able to get 280 out of it. As I'm one of those poor bastards trying to make just 1 BTC on my 670 with a profit of ~$0.30 - $0.50 a day
i can confirm this since i have a 580 too (slighty OC).
if your interested which miner it is, the miner is called cudaminer
also with cudaminer you only use RAM on your GPU, you dont need alot of sysRAM to mine it Smiley my cudamminer uses 35kB RAM and allocates 1252 MB on my GPU (this depends on the launch-config of cudaminer)

Wait, is cudaminer bitcoin or litecoin based?

I have a problem with cgminer. I get only 350 on a 7870GHz editon at 1250 core... But with GUIminer I get 453... I think it is a problem with me changing SDK and drivers finding the right combination and don't knowing how to remove openCL from cgminer.

I have deleted file phatk121016Pitcairnv1w256l4.bin from cgminer folder but this doesn't help... What am I doing wrong?

EDIT: And from the file I would say it is using "flegs" -v -w256 -I4" Can I change them to -w128 since I get better results in GUI with them.
Figure it out... I had to add -k poclbm and it works even better then it was...  Looks like I found a better SDK and driver combination(as one that I had before reinstall) in the last cat 13.4... But that means that cgminer in auto mode didn't used best kernel... Not sure why
Weird. I thought all 7xxx cards defaulted to -k poclbm -w 64 -v 1. Try those settings.

Is there a way to see what cgminer defaults to for the kernel, vectors and worksize?  I read the README's and I couldn't find it, but I could have just missed it.

You do have a point. I just don't understand why making the drivers open source is such a taboo. Is a driver really going to let other companies steal their designs or something?

Yeah, I figured that no one really works on NVIDIA because it's not worth it. I don't really know of any CUDA based miners on Linux that aren't like 2 years old, lol. I still would've liked to use this under Linux... guess I'll just have to chalk it up to NIVIDA still hating on the Linux crowd; as Linus put it, FUCK YOU, NVIDIA! Though, if you would be willing to work on adding some CUDA support, I could throw a few "satoshi" your way ;P

I appreciate the feedback, but I would like to know what the issue is under Linux and why it runs fine under Windows. I'm not really looking to build a machine to mine, I'm just trying to use what I already have when the computer isn't being used. I already know what kind of hash rate I should be getting etc. My issue is with cgminer and Linux.

I'm just using the defaults in cgminer and I downloaded the dependencies for it as well such as opencl-nvidia. I've already had it running fine in Windows for a while, but I would prefer to run it under Linux as I use Linux for my main stuff and Windows for gaming.

I guess 2mm is fine, I just didn't want some flimsy piece that I could dent by pushing on it with my finger.

I know this may have been asked and answered already, but I couldn't find anything and my post got lost in the newbie forum. Please don't hate me if I did miss something or completely misunderstood the FAQ's.

I'm running a GTX 670; yeah I know NVIDIA, but I make a super small profit and I got it for gaming. I see this as more of a hobby or something like folding@home, but can make some money off of. OK, getting back on topic, no matter what driver I use (tried ~4) I can't get the CPU usage in Linux to drop from 100%. I wanted to know what if there was a particular driver that works well or something. Also, I don't quite understand the whole kernel thing for cgminer, so my next question is, is there a kernel that is better suited to a NVIDIA card like mine? I noticed there are suggestions for ATI, so I'm just throwing it out there.

I am a CNC Machine Operator for a 3 meter by 1.5 meter sheet at 3mm thick is about $170 You would only use half that for a case.

I am thinking of doing the same as you but main problem is your cards over heating I was thinking of getting the "EVGA X79 Classified" motherboard since it has 3 graphics card slots evenly spreed out a lot of room be twin them.

How much did that setup cost you? I have around 5k to spend and am looking at getting 1 dedicated pc or 2-3 pc's with 3 7950's
What would you guys recommend to do I will be using it just to mine coins.

Thanks, that is really expensive for a sheet... I'm looking for some type of metal that is ~3mm thick that is cheap.

Now, if I were you, I would not blow that much money on a setup. Go for some old ATI cards that are rated really well for M/hashes and throw a bunch of them on a decent motherboard, but not an expensive motherboard like the EVGA one.

I think due to the design on these cards there's no good way for me to place the fans. They draw air in from the front, and mostly exhaust through the top leading edge of the card. The heatsink fins run perpendicular to the length of the card, so not much air can make it out the end. The rear of the card does seem to vent a bit, but I'm pretty sure most of it comes out the top or directly inside the case.

I swapped the fans and it's not much better like expected. One card seems to run a tad bit cooler (90 instead of 95), but I still have it slowed way down. The others are all still running at 95 or so, throttling every now and then. I don't much care for the cooler design on these cards!

Thanks for the comments guys!

Edit: I think I might have a problem with the thermal compound on one of these cards. It sure seems to idle higher than the others. Taking the cooler off is going to void my warranty though, isn't it?

I just noticed that the fins are indeed not parallel to the board... stupid design IMO. Also, re-applying the thermal compound is alright with some manufacturers, but I'm not sure if Gigabyte is one of those. *IMPORTANT* If you do apply new thermal compound, please please only apply a super tiny amount. Less = More in this case and considering the GPU chip is less than half the size of a CPU, it should only be around a couple millimeters at most. Let me get a link for you that describes this, but for CPU's. Found it: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/What-is-the-Best-Way-to-Apply-Thermal-Grease-Part-1/1303

Well, the reason I said to flip the case and reverse the fans at the end of the cards is to help move the hot air away from the cards. The way you have it right now, the fans may be blowing air on them, but the air flow is all screwed up and the heat doesn't have a good way to escape so it sticks around the cards instead.

Just curious how much that sheet metal cost and where you got it from.

EDIT: Thought I would give some advice for the airflow. Not sure how you have the fans blowing at the end of the card where the dvi ports etc. are, but those should be pulling air away and not blowing on the cards. Then have the ones at the back of the cards pushing air on them. Also, if possible, I would have the case flipped on the side so that the connector side of the cards are pointing up. This should help aid in removing the heat if you follow how I said you should have your fans blowing because heat rises.

Best driver for NVIDIA GTX 670 & cgminer?
by
bitbrandon
on 29/04/2013, 00:38:04 UTC
First, before this post gets flooded with tons of "NVIDIA is a waste of time" or "it's not profitable" etc. please understand these things.

1.) I already have the hardware, which I purchased for gaming last year.
2.) Crazy enough, I actually make a profit currently, but it is so little that you might as well consider me crazy.

Now onto the issue.

I've gone through about 3-4 different video drivers under linux and I'm still getting 100% CPU usage whenever I run cgminer. I've also updated cgminer about 4 times as well. None of this seems to help while I run linux and I can only get away from the issue when I run under windows, but considering I do most of my stuff under linux and just gaming under windows, it's a real pain. I have to either go without mining for a few hours or mine and pretty much do nothing on my machine. I've seen a post or two about a possible issue with OpenCL and NVIDIA cards or something, but I have yet to find a real fix for the issue. Maybe there is none, but I just wanted to know if someone knew if a certain older driver would work better, similar to how the ATI side has to use an older driver etc. to get good hashes.

DIY Is the best way to go imo, and its fun to build :p

I'm just curious as to what you mean by DIY. Are you talking about building your own ASIC type machine or some FPGA or just a bunch of GPU's?
