Welcome back!

Fantastic to see a proper data centre miner again!

What would this produce a day in X11?

Having issues setting up an Avalon A7
by
bitcoinbarron
on 12/03/2017, 19:27:24 UTC
Hi all,

Having major issues battling setting up my A7

Mainly due to assigning the controller an IP address, (and it keeping it) but thats not why I am here,

I have read somewhere for a Fix for Slush's pool??

Will my Avalon A7 work with slush's pool, right out of the box? or is major tinkering required.

Kind regards
Alex

Ps, I have set up plenty of Spindoolies and Antminers. but this one is testing me  Huh

Avalon 7 looks like a better deal after seeing all these problems with reliability.

+1 here,

If they daisychain like the Avalon4/6 you could buy one controller for like 50 units if you had USB hubs and such.

but with that you have the one single point of failure,

I will probably do 3-6 Avalon's per controller, although its going to be a learning curve for me as I have only set up Spondoolies and Bitmain kit.

Either way I feel this is a more reliable way to go with my mining enterprise rather than attempting to keep Bitmain S9's propped up ahah

How are these miners controlled?

Looks like they'll be run like Avalon4 and Avalon6 were, where multiple modules are chained together to a single RPi controller. The single-point failure part isn't so great, but since it's an off-the-shelf part replacement is super easy. Setup and configuration are also super easy because you don't have to track down IPs for every individual machine. Overall a pretty good setup.

Thanks Sidehack,

These look like they would sit nicely mounted to a rack shelf with a IBM 2880w PSU on top powering the three. really excited about these  Grin

How are these miners controlled?

Even with Bitmain's release of the latest S9 batches, I am severely thinking of buying some Avalons,

ANNNDD the R4 is now sold out,

don't know why everyone is rushing, I am waiting for Monday to buy the Avalon!

The R4 has been sold out since they first launched it. They haven't released any subsequent batches yet, only S9's have had more released Wink

Have they really only released one batch? and my bad sorry  Shocked

Also done the usual, swopped the PSU's about and given it a brand new APW3+ (the new ones) as I have had 3 of the older style ones fail so I was kinda hoping it was the PSU  Undecided

hi again all,

still having issues with this S9, I have rebooted it about 6 times now, it keeps restoring to factory defaults then just disappears from the network???

then when you reboot it, its network lights, light up briefly (and the coinciding ones on the switch) then go out after 1-2 seconds, it cycles this over and over, on and off with both the "fault" and "Normal" LEDs dimly lit,

It also doesn't respond to having its reset button held in for 10 seconds,

Any advice or should I just contact bitmain again

Dear Bitcoiners,

Our offices will be closed October 01-07 in observance of the Chinese National Day. Logistics will be out and no fixes will be made during that period. Responses to your inquiries may be delayed as a result.

Please visit support.bitmain.com for troubleshooting or for leaving us a message.

Regards,

the Bitmain team

copied from the S9 thread. would be kinda stupid to effectively close the show tho?

Decided to take the plunge and order a brand new S9 today and its starting to look like a dud,

Pulled a working PSU from a S7 I had running and plugged it all in, it powered up with fans at full speed, none of the hash boards have lit up and its not coming up on the network.

Does anyone have any idea of a fix or am I going to have to try through Bitmain?

Regards
Alex
Try the reset function by putting a paperclip in the little pin hole. That can help and im sure bitmain will ask you to try it.
Also try unplugging power to the power to hash boards and power only the controller. If the controller is alive it should show up on network and give GUI access. If still no access, leave hash boards unplugged and again do the reset.

Remember each time you push the rest button hold it in 10 seconds. The red light next to the reset should start blinking. Leave miner running for at least 5 min to allow the reset firmware to be loaded and start running.

Thank you everyone for the swift responses,

After about 4-5 power cycles and the miner each time presenting a different fault condition it finally booted into life.

Have been watching it carefully I must say, there is far more nail biting involved in keeping a S9 running than any other miner  Embarrassed Embarrassed

Given rated 845w total load and 6 boards giving 140w per-board my bet is 1 PCIe power jack per board.
wonder how well it would fit in an old s4 case?
Or the 4U high case from the miner A1 chip Dragon clone, 1.1THs @ 1,300w) that AMT finally sent me 8mo after ordering...

If you are on about rack mounting it, it looks like its about 20 inches long so I would imagine the boards would be too long Sad

Could you mount the boards length ways in a old spondoolies case tho? but I would imagine you would have heat issues toward the back of the case imho.

Would be willing to give it a go if I had the spare cash

The control board uses a 6-pin. I would bet the hashboards take 3x 6-pin each as well.

yeah this photo looks like you are right >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>V

                                                                                                                                              V

                                                                                                                                                V
                                                                                                                                                 V
                                                                                                                                                  V

That does look very interesting indeed, I wonder how wide it is and if it 19inch rack mounts easily?

EDIT: just looked, and its 20 inches long so no hope of a rack mount

Wow, deffo a curve ball for Bitmain to produce this!

I would want some kind of filter on the incoming side tho, if its aimed at being used in the home environment.

I have even tried emailing bitmain regarding this but the guy answering the emails who goes by the name of Sharif, really hasn't got the jist of what I am trying to get over to him.

I keep trying to specify that I am asking regarding the offer but he keeps just referring me to the prices on the website.

"Sharif (Bitmain)
Aug 10, 14:27 CST

Dear Alex,

Price offered on webpage is including miner. 320$ per 1 units S7

Price of PSU is 105$ per unit.

After you confirm final amount of miner and provide detailed delivery address, we will ask shiiping company to calculate delivery cost to England."

I give up
