Yes, sure. One thing is certain in this market: there are ups and downs. So definitely, alts will crash.
But the coupling with BTC is what kills it the most. But this will definitely change. We are already seeing this somewhat with ETH: when you look at coin charts with ETH pairings they show less coupling with BTC.
We still have a long way to go, however. But one thing that you can do is invest with coins that show promise in utility, and not just profit.. like MeVu. With that assurance, you can weather the storms with much more comfort.

I have seen a lot of fails, the successes are yet to be determined actually. The reason ICOs fail are many. For me one of the main ones is not having a tangible product or service already, something like a prototype. Most just draft a whitepaper and buy a designer with cool artwork, that's it. It might be safer to buy a more solid coin, especially if you think the returns can come back faster than the natural growth of the coin. This is an advanced form of arbitrage, esp in such a volatile market like the crypto market.
During a bearish market is the best time to buy into coins and tokens. Just make sure that the coin or token you are investing into has a good foundation, qualified team (to implement what the coin actually promises to provide) and solid tech.

It's not a black and white issue, indeed there are certainly better ways in which you can invest in both ICOs and BTC.  For example, invest in BTC then for the ICO, if the technical team looks committed to the project (Linked in etc profiles loudly showing their involvement in the project) and if the whole ICO looks very well organised like in MeVu ICO, then it probably means they are in the long haul.

To minimise risk and get to invest in a good altcoin, what you need to do is to not go with some unnecessarily shilled coins or try to chase pump and dump schemes. Go all in on what you think the coin can provide as a technical solution to some problem that you deem significant.

There's no better time to buy than the current. In any situation. This is true if you believe in the technology. If your aim is speculation, then good luck: you will win some, you will lose a lot. Just go for coins that have great ideas, for instance, the Eterbase project. No one really knows when investing whether it will turn out greate, and let no one tell you otherwise. What we all do is speculate and guess to see which coin is most likely not to come back and bite us.

One thing to look out for when investing in a crypto is whether the team already has an existing product or prototype, that will actually benefit with exploiting the blockchain for its existing product with new technology.
