Instead of checkpoints, client could hard-code a MAIN_CHAIN_MIN_POW variable. This would be the PoW of the main chain when that version of the client was released. All clients wouldn't need to agree on a value. It is just a spam protection value.
Clients should download headers first and only commit blocks to disk that are on a chain that has PoW higher than the hard coded minimum.
Clients should respond to "inv" messages containing unknown block hashes by sending a "getheaders" message rather than asking for the block.
If the block extends your main chain, you will be sent it.
Peer sends: "inv" containing unknown block
Send to peer: "getheaders" with standard block locator (send at most once per inv message received)
Peer sends: "headers" with new blocks on it's main chain
Add these headers to header tree
If the main chain is extended and the main chain has PoW greater than MAIN_CHAIN_MIN_POW, request those full-blocks

No matter what happens, the longest chain will always have more PoW than the longest one when the client was writen, so the best chain is guaranteed to have more PoW than MAIN_CHAIN_MIN_POW.
The client won't consider itself synced unless it is on a main chain with PoW that exceeds that value.

sorry to hear what happened. while not all members of your team performed up to par, this should have been avoided with proper requirements verification and product testing. a team leader not only has to set the requirements of the project, but also is ultimately responsible for verifying that the product meets the requirements before letting the public use it. it's not easy to do by any means, so learn and keep trying 
0 blocks about 72 hours on 11 G Sandy dual core cpu`s; 2x i5 and 2 i7, i test every release.
something's severely broken in your setup - 20 systems here. Seeing avg 1 block/hr.

Yes, I encourage everyone to do their own difficulty projections. Obviously, some people believe the ROI on things like the Block Erupter Blade/USB will make a positive return. Others don't care about ROI and simply want an ASIC to help protect the network. Different people have different reasons for wanting to get the latest technology. Please don't assume your motivations are the same as someone else's.

Based on the date that you started your thread, and the date you received your unit, it's possible they shipped it after the thread was created. Hopefully it's a similar story for melmo? Not ideal, but it could be worse...
Has anyone done a rough return on investment estimate on these?
tldr: You'll never see the money back. Its like buying a 7790 but at double the cost.
Yea it does feel a little pricey for the hash rate, although these would use significantly less electricity.
It depends what you are looking for in return - pure money from mining Bitcoin? Best estimate I've seen is approximately 12-24 months to recover their cost, depending on what the difficulty does over that time.
If, however, you want them more as a novelty, or, as I and a work colleague will be, you are going to use them to teach your children a bit about the cryptocurrency, then you might value them differently!

I am talking about financial return from mining bitcoin. I am considering grabbing some for the novelty, but honestly just haven't done my due diligence on whether the price point makes sense as a financial investment.
Random thought: wouldn't these be even cooler if they could be daisy chained? I'd imagine the power draw of putting these in series would be prohibitive though...
