I thought we don't have this argument anymore but seems like this is still the case. Perhaps coingecko might be an alternative?

Guys, you gotta do proper research before investing in an altcoin. I'm seeing many people promoting their coins with just qualitative reasons. Check on the development of the coin, check on the community, check on trading volume and of course market cap. You might want to use a website like coingecko for research.

Re: Best Investments

Try to invest in casino or gambling bankrolls you have assurance that they will not run your money unlike those cloud mining owners many of them are all scammers don't try to invest with it. Before making investment make sure you will a find a good review on that gambling sites
yeah when i am in crises then i am invest in casino or gambling sites and i make a good profit in short time and sometime it very profitable and if you have a good experience then you can easily make money in it.

I don't think you can make a so quick profits from any casino bankroll investments because it takes quite long time to give you decent profits. So you need to invest in advance then only you can withdraw money when you need it. But if you invest for immediate profit then I don't think you can do it. But if your talking about gambling then you will invite some more crisis if you play when you need an urgent money.

Investing in bank roll or in a casino takes at least 6 months to get a profit because it doesn't that fast like the other investments because it has a low rate of return and it is one of the safest investment so you can expect a low rate in a legit investment. If you want faster return investment then invest in a coin because they are just affordable and volatile to its price and you can easily sell them because they are available in almost all markets.

Which casino bank roll do you see bringing in good returns?

Re: [Manipulation 101] Market cap (to all who love repeating it these days)
by
bobster

I think it's a genuinely pathetic and shit metric, but it's hard to know what might replace it for simple reference. Perhaps some balance of trading volume vs supply but that still wouldn't be soundbitey enough for most people.

That's the problem. Market cap is a very oversimplified metric, but it's the best that is easy to calculate and understand. But with trade volume, we would have the same problem - a high value here can also indicate that a particular good/cryptocurrency is just used for speculation but nothing more.

A more complete evaluation of the potential of different cryptocurrencies is what the people at Coingecko tried, but it has its flaws, too; because for example the different coins have different development strategies. So the Coingecko value can be distorted by some minor metrics. It's still a very good complement to market cap if you want to evaluate a particular coin.

An alternative approach I would like to see realized would be the trading volume to goods and services instead of the trading volume to fiat currencies and cryptocurrencies. For example, one could try to aggregate the information of Bitpay-like payment processors (with CoinPayments in the case of altcoins), OpenBazaar-like decentralized markets and centralized e-commerce sites. That would indicate if a cryptocurrency is really used. And here, I think, Bitcoin would beat all competitors by a very high margin (I wouldn't be surprised if it's over 90 percent).

all of these factors, when considered individually, are bad and will even give the wrong idea in some cases. but when you have them all in your analysis then you can come up with a better conclusion.
- market cap
- trade volume and its change over time, for example is it temporary rise or has been up all year.
- price
- transaction number and volume
- services, merchants,...

Hi guys, Bobby here from CoinGecko. Interesting discussions here that you guys are having. I strongly agree that market cap is not the sole way to measure altcoins. There needs to be many other ways to look at these cryptocurrencies and that's what we attempted to do. Always looking for ways to improve things so yea do let us know if you have any. At the moment we take into account market cap, trading volume, development, community and public interest in evaluating cryptocurrencies and although it's not perfect, it does create a sort of alternative rank for consideration when trading any altcoins.

Re: CoinGecko score system is far from reality
by
bobster
on 11/09/2015, 15:39:00 UTC
Hi this is Bobby, co-founder of CoinGecko. We don't claim that our ranking is the best but we want to help the community by providing more metrics to better analyze altcoins. That's our main objective.

I agree that there are more metrics that we should consider and we plan to add more metrics as we go along. The community section is highly skewed by using data from Reddit which I agree doesn't reflect coins used in non-English speaking countries such as Monacoin (popular in Japan) or Ybcoin (originating from China). That being said, it still provides a basic method for looking at altcoins.

For developer, we actually take stats from Github and for those hosting their source code on Bitbucket, we get the stats there. Coins which do not have open-source code repository will have a score as 0 as we cannot evaluate these coins. Coins need to have their source code open for others to check for bugs and ensure that the code does what the coin creator claims.

Hope this help answer your concerns.

Re: Scoring coins on Tech, Community, Devs, Name and Market Cap
by
bobster
on 20/06/2015, 05:06:22 UTC
Awesome!!! Wow, that was quick :-D Oh! And look... all the usual suspects...

I wish they included technical analysis. There are few top coins that would lose ground on lack of technical merit.

Hi mate, this is Bobby, co-founder of CoinGecko. Thanks for informing OP of our website. Really appreciate the support that you provide!
Our original vision started out to also do technical evaluation of the innovation behind each coin. We had an initial version of our matrix calculation ranking innovation but we found that this exercise becomes very subjective because what is important and innovative to one coin community might be described as a pure useless feature by another coin community. We decided to just focus on objective metrics that are quantifiable and verifiable to remove any such debate behind our partiality.

We are always looking for feedback and suggestions to improving CoinGecko. If you have any comments on how we can improve, do drop me a PM or email me at bobby@coingecko.com. Thanks!

Re: What's your contribution to the Bitcoin ecosystem?
by
bobster
on 21/04/2015, 15:09:01 UTC
Anybody else wants to share his contribution to bitcoin? Come on guys, stop whining about the decreasing price of bitcoin, and start doing something about it.

Promote it, write articles about it, make people get attention to it or just invest in it!  Wink

I agree with your views! We should all start doing something to develop the ecosystem!

As JFK once famously said:
"Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."

For me, I help curate news (mostly Bitcoin) on www.altcoinweekly.com
I then went on to create a cryptocurrency ranking website www.coingecko.com

P/S - Cool blog you have there btw. Keep up the good work.
