Coins are Holding up pretty well. Or is it a bear trap? I am thinking all the real bad news is baked in to the price already, give or take $10 swings. Where do we go from here?

The whole China hype plays perfectly into western stereotypes about simple minded savages that need to be saved and educated, or in this case, dragged into a pump and dump shady investement.

This isn't an issue of race. You can make it one, but why?

The point was that MORE people than ever before now know about Bitcoin. The buzz that came out of this was that the tone of the documentary was way more positive than anyone could have anticipated.

Its not an issue of race at all imo. Its a fact that the internet has leveled the playing field of the stereotypical "less advanced" countries. They are privy to all the same information of the perceived "advanced" societies.

I can't help myself. I look at bitcoins like i look at stocks and I shouldn't. Two completely different animals. My gut says we go higher. And the only reason I think this is because, whether it be the big money or exchanges, its in their best interest to keep everything as positive as possible to keep new money coming in and existing money invested in coins to stay that way. Just my 2c.

I am not computer savvy in regards to programming or setting up servers etc. If one were to buy all the equipment and software, hardware etc? How much would something like this cost to set up a Bitcoin exchange better than Mt Gox?

Servers are the least expensive things as usual. A rough estimate for a serious exchange could look like this:

Software development or purchase of out-of-the box product + customization: 100k-200k USD
Servers: around 20k USD should be enough + Xk USD that you want to spend on DDOS protection, X can be as large as you want and still won't give you 100% DDOS resistance.
Initial legal costs: 10K USD-100K USD (heavily depends on jurisdiction)

Thanks for your input.
Could you elaborate on the software?

Why does everyone think China is/was in the dark about bitcoins? Who is to say that China could have their own bitcoins they have enough people to support it?

One can plot the Google Trends volume for the bitcoin hieroglyphs and a similar volume worldwide indicator, like "mtgox". You will soon find out that China was in perfect sync with the rest of the world, with a mere lump when the now famous programme aired. It quickly faded away and the volume is back to it's post bubble decreasing slope.

The whole China hype plays perfectly into western stereotypes about simple minded savages that need to be saved and educated, or in this case, dragged into a pump and dump shady investement. Most of the time the African, Asian or Southamerican savages know much better than the fat westerners what their problem is and usually the root of that problem is precisely some form of western intervention.

That is a great way of putting it. I feel the same way.

I have been glancing of the minute by minute trades on Mt Cox over the last couple days. I know we have been trading sideways, but it almost has that "feel" that something is being set up. Looking at some of the larger (500+) coin trades, sells and buys, the price really isnt getting affected as much as it has in the past and on top of that there is hardly any volume, which you would think would exacerbate the price even more? The price is staying in a super tight range. It reminds me when I used to trade stocks and there would be a huge sell off and the price of the stock would open lower and stay at the same low give or take a dollar all day. Huge blocks would sell and the price stayed relatively flat. You know It was the market maker sitting there buying buying and goosing the market and letting it go a little bit at a time so he slowly unloaded probably the majority of what he bought as the buyer of last resort. I have no idea if this is consolidating for a move up or down. What do you guys think?

Irregardless, it's good news for Bitcoin. it means its spreading. Another few million people now know about Bitcoin, and from that people will tell their friends & family.

It's just great to see the news spreading, and as a result people have seen further potential in Bitcoin, and the price has been driven up.

regardless of how many Bitcoin's the Chinese purchase, I don't see how this is anything but great news. People just want the prices to go down so they can re buy in...

have another drink of kool aid.

I see all the posts about people in China lining up to buy bitcoins and they are going to cause a huge rise in the price. Why does everyone think that China is NOW finally getting involved with bitcoins? With China's technology and cutting edge technologies, WE(everyone other than China) could have been the ones that drove the price up for THEM?  They dont live in the stone age anymore.

What I mean by gambling is buying at exchanges waiting for the value to go up and sell as well as the short term trader. There has to be quite a few millionaires out there. Just having a chance. When I was a kid there were not anyways you really could make real quick money.

Does anyone else think that buying bitcoins is gambling? I think it is and I think its great. Alot of people look at them as/for other things but thats for another discussion. Its great that younger kids have an honest way to make some coin for their pocket. Which something like this was around when I was a kid.
