Just one more thing: We need everyone who stakes to be on v3.3.0.3 going forwards.  There are too many reports of people falling out of sync after staking on older versions.  To that end I've gotten a Mac version of 3.3.0.3 produced, which you can find a link to in the OP (page 1 of this thread).  Thanks to MystPhysX for compilation and patcrypt for testing.

Looks like Will isn't doing his job so it's up to me to update all the social media yet again.

Britcoin 3.3.0.3 is now available at https://britcoin.com/wallets/ and https://github.com/britcoin3/britcoin3.3/releases for Debian/Ubuntu and Windows.  No Mac version yet.

It sets a tail distribution of 0.5% annual interest for stakers, after the main 30 million coin emission is done.  There are also a few minor graphical improvements in the wallet.

If you're a Mac user or just don't feel like upgrading yet, you can use Britcoin 3.3.0.2 for now.  But please don't use a version lower than that as those old versions don't do enough to block pre-fork versions and other coins that use Britcoin's code.

General update - 23rd March 2017

Wallet development

Thanks to the BRIT community on being patient about these.  We cannot release new mobile or desktop wallets yet because they depend on an Electrum server, and there's a bug in the Britcoin Electrum server where it becomes unresponsive after a while.  We're still trying to sort this out but hope to have it done soon.

Due to the time lost to this bug, the new desktop wallet will just be a 'Lite' Electrum wallet of the kind you've seen in some other coins, rather than than an entirely new beast.  (We need to get a desktop wallet with SPV functionality and deterministic addresses completed as per the roadmap before the end of the period for which the investor gave funding.)  So you'd have a choice between our standard TOR-using desktop wallet that downloads the blockchain and stakes, or the Lite wallet that isn't on TOR by default and can't stake, but doesn't need to download the blockchain.

There is also a new version of the standard desktop wallet due for release with a small tail emission and minor visual improvements, as soon as we can manage to get it compiled for Windows and Mac.

Website

We have a new website at Britcoin.com; check it out!  You'll note it also links to a paper wallet and brain wallet generator (Services->Offline Storage).  Be very careful with brain wallets -- It's easy for a computer to try so many different phrases to guess your passphrase and take your coins.

Exchanges

It is expected that we will be added to the UK fiat->crypto gateway Cryptomate next week.  Please support the buy walls on C-Cex and CoinExchange to help give buyers more predictable and reasonable prices!

We're hoping to have BRIT trading on Cryptomate.co.uk by the end of the week, if not early next week.

This means users can buy and sell via instant bank transfer within the UK! Smiley

I've noticed that the max coin supply (of 20 or 30 million coins) was never properly set, not even in Britcoin 1, so I plan to release a fix for that.

I can easily cap it at 30 million and have already written code to do that.

Does anyone have any thoughts about a "tail emission" to keep a smaller amount of coins being made for much longer after the 30 million limit is reached?  What form should such a tail emission take?  0.5% annual interest rate?  0.05%?

Monero has a tail emission, as does Dogecoin.  The reason tail emissions may be good is because:

- They encourage people to keep staking even after the main emission.  (Without a tail emission, stakers only get the transaction fees of transactions they include in the blocks they create.  But what happens if there are hours without any transactions?  One might give up and stake a different coin instead.)
- Perhaps they help to restrict transaction fee inflation.  ("I'm already getting money from staking so I guess I don't need to increase my fees  Smiley" )  Cash is one of the payment methods that Britcoin will compete with, which presently has zero fees (until cash machine operators decide to increase the fees).
- They can compensate for lost supply.  Some Britcoins are lost every year, on purpose or by accident.

BRIT was my first real big rent-mining win so I've always got a soft spot for it.

Unfortunately, it is marked for delisting from C-Cex, which means it will be without a marketplace to trade at.

I'll do what I can to get it listed elsewhere...

Thanks for your support  Smiley  We already have another market at https://www.coinexchange.io/market/BRIT/BTC

I'm not sure whether we will try to stay on C-Cex or not.  Please assume that we won't.  (It's never a good idea to keep money in a place where it'll be removed in 2 weeks.)  I'm surprised that they announced delistings in a month when they've had so many problems with their site and keeping wallets up.

Just installed on two more VPSs... Here are some better instructions for compiling britcoind on an Ubuntu VPS.

I was doing it as root so didn't care whether I used sudo or not.

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install libevent-dev

apt-get install git

git clone https://github.com/britcoin3/britcoin3.3.git

apt-get install nano

sudo apt-get install gcc

sudo apt-get install openssl

sudo apt-get install libssl-dev

sudo apt-get install g++

sudo apt-get install software-properties-common

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bitcoin/bitcoin

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install libdb4.8-dev libdb4.8++-dev

sudo apt-get install libboost-all-dev

cd britcoin3.3/src
make -f makefile.unix USE_UPNP=-

./britcoind -daemon

nano ~/.britcoin/britcoin.conf
(Paste in the stuff you were just given when you tried to run britcoind)

./britcoind -daemon

Now I get this:

Code:
build/compat_libevent.o: In function `tor_gettimeofday_cache_clear':
compat_libevent.c:(.text+0x909): undefined reference to `event_base_update_cache_time'
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [britcoin3.3.0.2] Error 1
00:07:56: The process "/usr/bin/make" exited with code 2.
Error while building/deploying project britcoin-qt (kit: Desktop Qt 5.2.1 GCC 32bit)
When executing step "Make"

I tried to install libvent and it said I already have the newest version?

Code:
leigh@mintBox ~/britcoin3.3/src $ sudo apt-get install libevent-dev
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
libevent-dev is already the newest version.
0 to upgrade, 0 to newly install, 0 to remove and 176 not to upgrade.

I get the same error when I try to run britcoind too.

Code:
/home/leigh/britcoin3.3/src/tor/compat_libevent.c:638: undefined reference to `event_base_update_cache_time'
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [britcoind] Error 1

Well, let's focus on just the britcoind for now.  What do you run to cause you to get that last error there?  Let's take this to e-mail, and if something's wrong with the instructions I can add to them or change them.

I got this error:

Code:
build/compat_libevent.o: In function `tor_gettimeofday_cache_clear':
/home/leigh/build-britcoin-qt-Qt_4_8_6_in_PATH_qt4-Debug/../britcoin3.3/src/tor/compat_libevent.c:638: undefined reference to `event_base_update_cache_time'
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [britcoin3.3.0.2] Error 1
21:10:13: The process "/usr/bin/make" exited with code 2.
Error while building/deploying project britcoin-qt (kit: Qt 4.8.6 in PATH (qt4))
When executing step "Make"

So you're compiling the GUI then?  Try just the britcoind (in the src folder) first; see how that goes.

QT 4.8.6, that's strange.  You want to be using something between QT 5.2 and 5.5.

For the GUI, you might need:

sudo apt-get install libqt5gui5 libqt5core5a libqt5dbus5 qttools5-dev qttools5-dev-tools

EDIT: You may also need libevent for either daemon or GUI, though that was already in the instructions:

sudo apt-get install libevent-dev

Guide to installing on a Linux (Ubuntu) VPS.  Edited with new Github source code location and to use the bitcoin ppa for Berkeley DB instead of compiling from source.  I think the ppa is probably easier, but take a look at the original unedited post if you want to see the other method.

Quote
If compiling Britcoin 3 from source, you must use Berkeley DB 4 (e.g. 4.8) and not 5.

Here are some sample commands for how to get going on an Ubuntu VPS.  Note that you need over 1GB RAM to compile Britcoin because of the TOR stuff.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libevent-dev
apt-get install git

git clone https://github.com/britcoin3/britcoin3.3.git
apt-get install nano
sudo apt-get install gcc
sudo apt-get install openssl
sudo apt-get install libssl-dev
sudo apt-get install g++

sudo apt-get install software-properties-common
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bitcoin/bitcoin
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libdb4.8-dev libdb4.8++-dev

cd britcoin3.3/src
make -f makefile.unix

./britcoind -daemon

That gives you a suggested username and password.

nano ~/.britcoin/britcoin.conf

Put these in the text file:

rpcuser=that username you just got
rpcpassword=that password you just got

./britcoind -daemon

Blocktime target and maximum stake age

Looks like the move to a 2-minute target blocktime was successful   Smiley

The only remaining change in the v3.3 wallets to take effect is that there is a maximum stake age of 2.5 years.  You don't lose stake after this point, but you don't accrue stake any further.  This has already taken effect in a sense, but can't possibly affect anyone until the 2.5th anniversary of this coin, which I believe is this 27th December.

New wallet versions

There are new v3.3.0.2 wallets now available at britcoin.xyz.  Upgrading from v3.3.0.0 (which most people are using, as that was the last version that Windows and Mac wallets were compiled for) is recommended and desirable, but not essential.

These new versions reject connections from clients older than v3.3.0.0, as well they should because v3.3.0.0 was a hard fork.  They also have a few more hardcoded checkpoints to keep people on track while syncing.

If you have a version older than v3.3.0.0, you should have upgraded already and will likely be on an outdated fork.

Already in the v3.3 wallet, there's a shift from a 1 min blocktime target to a 2 min blocktime target, set to happen at block 1,076,800.

Now we're at block 1,072,183, and there's about 1,440 blocks a day if there aren't any non-staking periods, so the change should happen this Friday  Smiley

I mine over at ProHash.com and I asked them if they would add Britcoin as a option to be paid out in and looks like there going to add it. So if you have a script asic machine you can mine on prohash and be paid in Britcoin.
 Grin

There's nothing at ProHash.com... Did you get the address wrong, firehawk71?
Hello, sorry when I made the announcment about Prohash it was a bit pre-mature.. But it is there now.. They are script mining coin switch pool so you can use any script Asic to get Britcoin over at Prohasing.com
Once you join just go into settings and select the drop down menu for the coin you want to be paid in and you will now see Britcoin.  Grin

ProHashing.com you mean.  Nice; that's big news!
