Re: Why to have Sotoshi exposed is actually a good thing for the bitcoin community
by

Either way, it does not change the fact that Sotoshi owns so many coins. This, by itself, if not fully watched for, makes investors nervous when the owner is anonymous.

But we've "always" known about Satoshi's BTC, and we've always had the blockchain. It's not clear to me what you believe has changed?

Now the physical identity is revealed. People can confront him directly face to face if he dares to sank the market.

Yes, indeed I care more of the fortune and a stable market so that everyone can make some money. Is this not the reason why bitcoin can gain the majority's attention? It only grabs general public's attention when the exchange rate sky rocks, not before, even if the bitcoin protocol remains the same.

brilliant only because you look at it at 2020 hindsight. When the paper was submitted, there is no bitcoin at all. It is just another paper.

Re: Basic IQ test on Satoshi's identity

High IQ and the ability to make stupid mistakes are not mutually exclusive (unless your trying to infer that Satoshi is a complete idiot). Even the greatest minds have made errors it is only human. That being said it would be a completely and utterly stupid move to make all the effort to remain anonymous and use your name as your handle.

Logic fail. If he is rational and if he made the mistake of putting his real name on the original paper, then he wouldn't bother putting so much effort on being anonymous after that, because he is smart and rational enough to realize he already fucked it up.

He tried. He disappeared.

Dedicated journalist exposed Sotoshi in only TWO months.
by

on 08/03/2014, 11:00:50 UTC
Conclusion:

Either this is not Sotoshi,

Or it is very difficult to hide anonymously, which makes one of the claimed advantages of bitcoin void.

This triggers another question, how come the bitcoin community cannot find in years but journalist can in two months?

Of course he would use his own name because he was only contributing an idea. His paper even did not name it bitcoin.

Things only started to become complicated at least several years later when he realized how much a heat he created and how rich he could be... Then he disappeared.

I don't understand how hard this is to think through.

I would say 1% likely cause you don't know what you don't know.  But generally there's clear evidence the guy wanted to be anonymous and you don't use your real name if that's your goal.

That only happens when he realized that this actually involves huge fortune, not when he contributes an idea.

There are two things about Sotoshi that are intriguing.

1. He is the creator behind bitcoin protocol. For this, we thank him for opening a new chapter in human's history.

2. He owns 1 million bitcoins without paying a penny. For this, I find troublesome. He literally owns morn than 400 million USD without any hard work. He is so so rich but does nothing positive with the wealth. He does not pay tax, donate or aid people who need money. Unlike bill gates or other rich guys, he does not set up fund to provide aid or anything. Yes, in US, rich people do owe bigger responsibility to the society.

You might argue that his brilliant idea of creating bitcoin protocol is sufficient to justify the fortune. Really? He is more brilliant than Einstein? Or Nobel?

Most Importantly, if you own any bitcoin, are you worried if an anonymous person owns so much coins that can literally sank the market if he agrees to dump at once and that your hard owned cash will be gone. Don't try to convince me that my money is not money.

For this, I think having Sotoshi exposed is actually a good thing. We now know who is behind the chunk of cash and any move to impact the market by Sotoshi will be watched.

In a word, the last piece of puzzle is removed and we now have STABILITY in the market. This, will eventually prove to be healthy for the market.

No need to doubt because many Chinese like to gamble. Wonder which casino sees the most revenue? Not Las Vegas anymore, but Macao, with flocks of Chinese.

Re: Can IRS go after Sotoshi for unfiled income tax
by

At the current time short of a message from one of his accounts or a signed message from one of his keys there is no way to know for sure if he is Satoshi. Even if he was it would be hard for the government to force him to pay taxes on Bitcoin considering they cannot definitively prove he owns x amount of coins .

Unless the ecosystem around bitcoin is build, the owner eventually will need to exchange for fiat realize the fortune. So maybe government should track the account regardless who is behind the account.

This triggers another question. Can the government force to freeze any account if it has legitimate reason to believe that the account holder is a US citizen and therefore asks to build in the open source bitcoin client software certain rules to refuse to transact with the account until income is filed. Just like the hacked bitcoin from mtgox.

The bigger question is, is it desirable?

Wow, just think about it how much money will go to Obama... Now IRS may have the best interest to keep Sotoshi safe, whoever he/she is.  Smiley

How it has not been converted to FIAT so they have no way to get him for taxes.

But in theory, it is taxable income. Just like property tax, you will pay eventually. That is what I am saying, before Sotoshi pays, irs has the best interest to keep him safe.

Eventually yes, if he even uses it.

I am not sure how all that tax stuff works like with stocks when you make profit off stocks and turn it into more stocks ect ect... the only real example I have from real life is the 401K which from my understanding is not taxable as long as the cash never hits your hands... so I imagine this would fall under the same rules.

401k is created by the congress to set an exception to the general rule that all incomes are taxable. You can defer your payment of tax when you retire, so as to give you an incentive to be financially responsible for your retire life.

Bitcoin, if you treat it as intangible property, than there is no legal barrier for levying income tax when the income is realized. Even better, irs may pass a rule to realize bitcoin is income itself as it is currency in itself!
