Re: [PRE-ANN] WINGS - Where DAO Unicorns Are Born
by

how to differentiate the DAO and wing DAOs? they should have different name.

Good question.

The names are different.  There is "The DAO" which more or less resides at daohub.org and is referred to as "DAO", and then there is the Wings DAO which we think people will just call "Wings".

I think there will be a lot more confusion for practitioners of Qigong as they have a much different take on the meaning of "dao".

Besides the names the Wing DAO is different from "The DAO" in that the goal with Wings is to make a platform for people to easily launch their own Decentralized Autonomous Organizations.  We don't see a world with just one monolithic DAO.

Forgive me if this was explained somewhere...

1. How will Wings make money exactly?
2. What do you anticipate the cost might look like for an interested DAO creator?
3. I understand that the platform's intended use is to allow "people to easily launch their own Decentralized Autonomous Organizations". Does this mean the platform could be used to launch a DAO with no strings attached to Wings? Or is everything done with the Wings platform forever linked to Wings?

although I am somewhat disappointed you paid 'mucho" for the sp30...I was under the impression you were 'SuperMan"
getting equipment for free from your hardware guides and reviews
Even the guy who writes the software that almost all mining equipment in existence uses and depends on hardly ever gets free hardware, even though he returns the favour with ongoing driver support, though he did get an SP10 which he was grateful for.
I think this is very sad.   Manufacturers need to 'man up' and take care of con and kano.

They probably get free stuff  once in a while and plus they were in the bitcoin game alot earlier than most enough with the pity parade they probable have a decent BTC portfolio.  I write open source software myself and I never expect a handout I do it in my spare time because I like to code..  and ..

most of the code i write and sometimes make money off of is stuff I needed for myself anyways and just decided to share it since it solves a problem for me and others if they didn't do it someone else would have.

they do good work yes but come on now
Thanks. My point was not about asking for more stuff. I was pointing out it would be a little hypocritical for the hardware manufacturers to gladly give away hardware for the sake of a review which may affect the objectivity of the reviewer, while not supporting the developer who wrote the software they depend on. Fortunately neither of the parties involved here suffer from that as Dogie's reviews remain objective in my opinion, and Spondoolies offered me an SP10.

As for writing free software, I actually put aside and sacrifice some time that I used to work professionally to continue working on cgminer (and other bitcoin software projects) turning it into a part time job, though I have continued to try and incentivise the maintenance of all my projects as free software by charging less for paid code when the source remains with an open license such as GPL, or simply maintaining/updating the existing driver for a once off donation. The core cgminer code I continue developing for free. Driver code I find it hard to write for free when it's used to allow a hardware manufacturer to make bucketloads of profit. I also get paid as much as possible in bitcoin since ultimately I'm here to help the bitcoin ecosphere as much as I'm here to get paid. Yes I'm bitcoin-operated as someone once called me, but only for certain aspects of what I spend time coding.

ckolivas, I'll give you 6 kW of free hosting with us for as long as we're in business. If you have use for a dedicated server on a 100 Mbit/s symmetrical fiber link, we could probably provide that for you too, as long as you're careful about security and do your own sysadmining and are okay with uptime in the 99%-99.9% range.

Edit: As long as we're in business and you are actively maintaining cgminer and contributing to the community.
Thanks for the generous offer. I have no need for that at the moment but I appreciate the offer.
Con,

What hardware are you NOT interested in. The reason I ask is that I have good bit of hardware that I have recently pulled from service for lack of space and would be willing to send some your way if you are interested. For example, do you have access to cheap electricity or are you only interested in very efficient hardware? I have hardware, coolers, PSUs and would be happy to send some stuff your way as a gesture of appreciation.

This gets stranger and stranger. I had some time this evening and took a chance with additional troubleshooting since I'm pretty dead in the water otherwise. The board powers up fine when A,C,D PCI-E are plugged in, but B is what causes the issue. I see nothing wrong with that connection.

If I try to get the board to hash in this state - I am not sure this is possible - I get the Operation status 20 error and it continuously re-detects the board. I have not touched anything to do with firmware and since it doesn't seem to be helping the others with that problem and I'm not going to try yet. I am wondering if it is complaining because that one isn't powered up and if it is possible to disable a chip. I'm not even sure if things are set up that way - just hoping for some kind of way to get it partially alive again.

Thanks for any help.
In a conversation at some point I was advised by Dave that it was worth trying to disable certain dies to resolve this issue. Essentially the idea is to identify the bad die then set its voltage to ZERO so it will then be disregarded and allow the healthy dies to work. So using the version of the hcm tool I have the command is something like # ./hcm --write-die-settings 1:0@0 if you wanted to disable die 1. I tried this tonight but it did not solve my problem.

Hopefully Dave can chime in with further suggestions. I will report back if I have any luck tomorrow.

So here is the error I am getting when trying to hash...

You have the same problem as me  just stopped hashing 5 days ago and gives this error. Teal said I need to get a multimeter to track it down.

Well, I tried flashing the previous firmware and now the error says "Operation status 20.." This is really strange.

Re: Energy Consumption of the Bitcoin Network
by

Interesting discussion...

RE: Solar and Wind - For every megawatt of solar or wind power added to an ISO there must be a megawatt of NG, coal or nuclear power deployed in order to maintain stability of the grid. ISOs such as ERCOT must have the ability to maintain stable supply / frequency which means if a wind farm is feeding the grid then ERCOT must have adequate firm fixed generation capacity such as NG fired spinning reserves to ramp up as the wind stops blowing.

The only way to avoid the need to provide an equal amount of traditional generation to pair with your wind or solar is if you have the energy storage capacity to create an adequate reserve. Batteries are still cost prohibitive as are most other methods. The other option would be to curtail operations as the wind and sun stop blowing or shining.

RE: Huge Opportunity That Bitcoin Is Perfectly Suited For - When you start to look beyond the traditional constraints of the existing grid and fuel transportation networks you will find that Bitcoin is perhaps one of the best suited technologies to leverage abundant energy resources that are hiding in plain site. Rather than spoil it by elaborating too soon I am curious to know if any of you smart people know what I am referring to. Anyone?

Re: I no longer work for Butterfly Labs (BFL)
by
btchedge
on 23/06/2014, 03:48:17 UTC
I left most recently, and since I'm no longer under their control I can now share with anybody interested two important things.

One, bcp19, whose first name is Bruce, DOES work for BFL. Ask him and I'm sure he'll say yes, but if he doesn't, I have no problem with linking to pictures of him while employed at the plant. He's been there since last fall. I seriously don't know what game he's playing on this forum and what he's trying to accomplished, but I'm pretty sure it ain't good. To be fair, he is a nice guy.

Second. BFL received chips months ago that were intended for what you guys consider the Monarch. Thousands of miners have already made at BFL's plant using those new chips. Ask Bruce that also. He knows. Since you're now curious as to where all them miners went and are continuing to go, here... http://www.coinware.io/. Moreover, HashTrade, NimbusMining, LiquidBits, and Netsolus. The lead guy for CoinWare is named James (I'm not stating his last name because I don't want to get in trouble, but I'm sure you smart guys can figure it out). James visits the plant a lot, walking around assembling unescorted then heads to the offices of management to discuss whatever.

This post is valid https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=262052.msg6877963#msg6877963 because I was there when two guys from HashFast (don't get the name mixed up with HashTrade) walked the plant with Sonny, David, and Josh.

I honestly don't want to get mixed up with this mess because I have a family and all. BFL treated me pretty fairly while I was there, but feel it important for you guys who have millions still tied up and waiting for equipment to be aware. It's a shame that you guys who ordered first will probably be the last to get your miners. At least when you do get them, you'll make your money back, even if it takes longer than you planned, if I understand correctly how the whole thing works. Still, it's a screwed up deal.

One more thing, for what it's worth. Everybody in the plant knows about Sonny's past, and some not mentioned here, and we all joke about how we are (was for me, now) working for crooks and scumbags, most the time in Spanish when management is not around, of course.

Heck, I might as well add this tidbit, even though it doesn't matter none except to Sonny's girlfriend. Sonny has been screwing one of the pretty Mexican girls in assembly since early last year. I'm not going to mention her name for obvious reasons, but everybody at the plant knows it except Sonny's girlfriend who have a son together. I don't see that relationship lasting too much longer due to them fighting a lot, where then Sonny may start seeing the Mexican girl full time then.

Sorry if I said too much. All I wanted to say was about Bruce and CoinWare and how you guys are getting screwed big time.

Peace.
While trying to inform the public of wrongdoing by a manufacturer is noble, making false accusations about others like Bachrach / Gibson is just as bad. The type of accusations you made could have consequences and should not be made without supporting facts. I can guarantee that Monarchs were not getting shipped as you described. It is plausible that what was being shipped were the rack mountable 65nm product. I do not know this for a fact. However, I can confirm that after the initial batches of 65nm chips were delivered to buyers in the fall of 2013 the supply of surplus chips dried up. This is most likely due to the fact that the price of BTC shot up and the 65nm surplus suddenly became viable again. Obviously, many of them went into rack mountable gear which is what you would expect an industrial scale miner to buy.

If you do a little research you will find that both James and Greg (Liquidbits) have gotten screwed like everyone else along the way with respect to hardware delivery. Take a look at the Hashfast bankruptcy as a point of reference where Liquidbits fighting to resolve that clusterfuck of a situation.

I am by no means trying to refute the known facts about BFL in general, nor am I claiming to know the details of the dealings you reference. I am simply making the point that you need to be very careful not to falsely accuse people of "fraud by association" unless you can prove it. There are plenty of bonafide dirt bags in this community that need to be called out.

Having been in communication with these guys a bit I can say that they are definitely not NEO & BEE types. These guys definitely know what they are doing and they have proven that they can deliver since they have already done so. Unlike many offerings, their technical skills and abilities are pretty well proven.

The hard part will be execution and scaling the business. It's great to see experts bringing innovation to market that all miners will have access to. I am cautiously optimistic, and look forward to watching this come together.

Important consideration regarding cooling heads!

Through the process of sourcing various cooling heads in our search for the best performance, we learned that many popular cooling heads are NOT flat. Certain heads are just slightly curved so as to better fit the intended CPU form factor they were originally designed for. Using such a head could lead to less than optimal results  with Habaneros since the contact surface is not perfectly flat. I will post some more details soon regarding the heads that test best. In the meantime, make sure you don't haul off and buy a high performance solution whose design will only guarantee lower performance due to it's design.

I think this might be a bit much for me to tackle.
Do they have a plug and go model?
We are finalizing a plug and go model based on the Habanero. Should have some details in coming days. Limited quantity will be available. That being said, if you can snag an $850 board that's a great deal and I would jump on it. What we will be offering simply takes some of the monkey work out of the equation even though the monkey work on these boards is pretty awesome.

Monkey work is what makes this shit fun. Somebody on the forums said "Leave shit alone?? Bitch, this is Bitcoin!!! Ain't nobody gonna just leave it alone!!"

Look forward to getting my boards.

Some people have big money involved and every second you are "fooling" around with shit it's not hashing making a reward. If the whole idea is to just fool around with hardware and squeeze a hash point higher then everyone else with a custom type setup then mommy is paying for everything or you just have bank.

I think you are confusing "fooling around" with "optimization". The Habaneros provide an opportunity to optimize a solution based on the specific variables you are dealing with (electricity cost, total load, ambient temps, space). This takes a little time but is a much better option than receiving a shitty build with a bunch of shitty components that many hardware manufacturers have shipped. Those products often require tearing them apart and tweaking in order to fit ones environment.

This board has the following...

1. Cooler Master 240L
2. Original fans replaced with 2 Delta 1212GHE-CF00 | 240 CFM | Max Air Pressure 27.48 mm H20
Fans are pulling (as opposed to pushing airflow) so that they blow the hell out of the back of the board. They are a bit expensive, loud, and at 29.4 watts they are not ideal. I just wanted to see what performance was like with these.
3. PSU for testing is just a Thermaltake 850W
4. Controller is an Intel NUC running Ubuntu
5. This one is not in a case. As you can see in the picture it's just sitting on my desk so I can test it.

We do have some interesting solutions in the works that I will post soon. Feel free to PM if you have any other questions.

I had those exact fans on my avalon b2 .. ROFL ... they are loud as hell and sure can move air like a mofo... I thought my avy was gonna slide off the bench.... LOL
Glad you are amused. I wasn't paying attention when I first plugged one in and the little fucker launched from my hand into my torso. Scared the shit out of me. I wish I had a video of everyone who picks one of these up and fails to comprehend the power in that little package.
