Thee is no definite answer to this as even big exchanges have got hacked in past. Only thin I can suggest is to split investments in different exchanges.

The incidents of big exchanges getting hacked is something that makes me worry a lot. If those big exchanges cannot protect themselves from these hacking attempts, it will be very difficult for an average user to do this.

Do not use bitcoins as emergency funds as the prices are volatile. Invest only the amount that you can afford to loose.

You are right to some extent, bitcoins are quite costly now. One can get better returns in case of alt coins now which are cheaper and have more room for growth. .

Most of the reputed exchanges have tight security features to protect from hackers. So just use a reliable exchange and your investment will be safe.

It is next to impossible with current resources. But can be possible in future when we have faster and more efficient computers.

Such scams do affect the trust of people on crypto. I am not sure about the government in your country but if there are similar incidents in my country, government may consider banning bitcoins.

My bet would be to got for ripple if you want to invest in cins under $1 only. But you should not limit your investments just based on current price of the coin.

If you want an alt coin for long term investment, I will advise you to go for coins like ETH and bitcoin cash. You can also consider ripple as it is under $1 currently.

Suppose if all people start using bitcoins also, it will save so much paper used for printing currency. That will balance out the damage done as so man trees will be saved.
