Re: Silk Road sale.... BTC explosion.
by

I believe I read somewhere that silkroad hedges to dollars when the buyer buys, and back to bitcoin when the buyer marks as delivered and they need to pay the seller.  If that's true, I'd expect slight downward pressure during the sale, and upward pressure over the coming weeks as people's deliveries arrive.

Only if a vendor chooses to use the service, SR charges a fee to hedge a purchase like this in US dollars on top of their standard fee so not everybody uses it.

Re: Paranoia or suspicious trade timing
by
buck92
on 30/01/2012, 02:07:01 UTC
I accept that the following is bordering on paranoid wibble...

I just noticed, with the large trade that kicked us back up to 5.85 that the timing is suspicious.

It's suspicious because Mt.Gox seem to kill their live feed process (I hear because of a memory leak) once an hour.  The big trade happened seconds before the hour.

Is someone trying to make trades at the exact moment that bots all get disconnected?

Has anyone else noticed what times big trades start?

It seems like MtGox's api disconnects people at every odd hour, most likely to save bandwidth by closing connections to people who would otherwise just keep the api running 24/7 even while not at the computer.

I wouldn't say it is suspicious on MtGox's part, it is just common knowledge that this happens, thus people take advantage of the opportunity. If anything this issue highlights the inherent problems that come about when everybody relies on a single entity to do all their trading, especially in the case of Bitcoin which is supposed to be decentralized.

How much did you want to get out of the entire lot here?

I am asking for spot which is around $34, so if my math is correct somewhere around $700 for all the coins listed.

Also want to note that most of the walking liberty coins are gone. I gave one to my barber yesterday as a tip and sold 6 others to a friend, which leaves one still left for sale.

Is no one interested? If I don't hear anything in the next few days, I will begin looking to sell the coins locally or on eBay. Please message me with any questions or concerns.

God damn Gawker at it again.  Roll Eyes

http://gawker.com/5879924/now-you-can-buy-guns-on-the-online-underground-marketplace

No wonder SR went down in the middle of me checking out what's new..  Cheesy
Whaaaaat..... "Dbush" is a SR drug/gun seller. He writes this to Gawker staff:

""Every single citizen should have enough firepower that the government fears the citizens. The people should not fear the government," he said.

Dbush said he tries not to sell guns to people who want to kill civilians or commit crimes. But most importantly, he won't sell to people who are anti-American or anti-Israel. "I would try to keep their money if I found out this was the case. Maybe send it 2 the US Israeli lobby 2 help gain more support for Israel," he wrote."

Yeah a lot of yellow journalism in the writers articles. I believe the writer is looking at SR as his golden ticket to make a name for himself.

If you want an indication of how much of a joke this guy (and gawker as well) is just look at the article he wrote prior to the one in June on SR. The title of the article is "The Legend of Dov's Dong" and is a hard hitting journalistic piece on American Apparel's founder and CEO's dick...

I have a differing opinion on Silk Road. I think it could actually benefit Bitcoin in some ways if Silk Road was gone because it would remove a lot of the negative image that Bitcoin has. To think that it would have some kind of crushing effect to the Bitcoin economy is ridiculous in my opinion. Even if Silk Road is the number one merchant site in the Bitcoin economy it's still a relatively small site.

Everyone knows Bitcoin's price is not supported by commerce, with or without Silk Road it makes no fundamental difference. What it is supported by is trust and belief. Investing and speculating. That is what the current Bitcoin price is mostly about and I really can't see how Silk Road gone would change things for the worse. Most Bitcoiners do not use Silk Road nor have they ever used it, it was a huge hype boost to the last bubble but newsflash: that bubble has burst already.

In fact as a starting Bitcoin enterpreneur and someone who believes that Bitcoin can make a difference in legal commerce I would definitely not mind if I had one less negative publicity issue to worry about when marketing Bitcoin.

I understand your thoughts and agree with a lot of points you made. I sincerely hope Bitcoin is successful in the long run just for the simple fact that it is an easy, cheap, and increasingly simpler way to send money to people around the world, whether it is for family/friends or as a means of a transaction. I do think if SR disappeared it would have a negative affect on BTC exchange rates at least in the short term.

As for the long term I think something would pop right up to replace it. So although you would like to have less negative publicity around this subject, it will always be around due to the anonymous nature of bitcoin, since anonymity is something that goes hand in hand with the black/grey market.

You did make a very good point that made me think; perhaps Silk Road was just a catalyst in Bitcoins inevitable(?) rise and that the investing and speculating surrounding BTC is a signal of just how much people believe in it. Regardless I believe discounting SR like it is nothing is a mistake and that traders/speculators should at the least keep an eye on it.

but what happened to the basic principles of Econ101?...Know your market...go download tor and do some market research people.

I took action on your advice and went for a visit. Pretty interesting I gotta say... some of the transactions are obviously quite large too after browsing some of the listings and recent feedback.

The one question I had to myself was: whats stopping these sellers from signing up as buyers and performing a 'fake buy' to leave themselves more positive feedback? I'm no expert on this, but wont Tor itself will prevent basic security measures other sites may use like logging account IP's etc...

There is a forum community at SR who work together to try to root out the scamers through reviews and interactions with the actual vendors who themselves visit the forums to cultivate good relations. Also it costs money to buy a vendor account on SR which further deters scamers. Then there is the feedback system where buyers rate and leave comments on their transaction.

As far as the 'fake buy' feedback you are asking about, you can tell pretty easily as you can see along with the feedback what item the buyer purchased. Most of the time what happens is the vendor creates low cost listings or cheap digital listings (downloadable pron for example) where the vendor is able to build up feedback without having to pay large amounts of commission to SR. If a vendor wanted to make a fake account with legitimate looking transactions they would have to make a large investment as SR takes a cut from everything.

What would happen to Bitcoin if Silk Road dissappeared?

If the article on drugs being sold on SR brought some heat, wait until some senator hears about guns with scratched off serial numbers being sold anonymously on the internet...I can picture it now, someone capitol hill is sitting in front of their computer, jizzing their pants while reading this article, imagining all the grandstanding that could come out of all this.

I believe it is time to think about what would happen if SR suddenly disappeared from the web, would Bitcoin crash and burn along with it (or at least crash temporarily)? After all the June gawker article on SR was the beginning of the speculative bubble, bitcoin has been in. Since SR is the single largest entity actually using bitcoins for commerce (the rest is mostly speculative) what would happen if it disappeared? Anyone have thoughts?

The results are sobering. A lot that just don't spend, or spend very little.

For sure I think it indicates that we need to imagine what would happen if Silk Road suddenly vanishes one day. Would BTC crash and blow like a malfunctioning rocket? because when the June gawker article on SR appeared it certainly took off like a rocket due to speculation...would we have an opposite effect if SR just disappeared? It looks like most people around here don't actually use BTC as a currency or know a thing about SR even though it is the single most important entity to the real bitcoin economy (everything else as we know is mostly speculation).

With today's Gawker article on guns being bought and sold on SR I think this issue needs to be at the very least talked and pondered about, because I believe this new article may bring some serious heat to the website.  People need to prepare for the possibility of the fall of silk road and its impact on the bitcoin economy or be prepared to be holding the bags if something does happen.

BTW Silk Road has been down since the new article was published, perhaps to implement some changes or to avoid an influx of new traffic looking to buy BTC and explore Silk Road?

Anyone know if you can look at the full MtGox order book somewhere? I'd be interested in taking a look at it.

Thank you for that link it has been enlightening.  So it looks like there is a total of 22 bids at the 6.0 price point with one ask at 11,907BTC, looks like you guys were right. Ahh and the young grasshopper continues to learn Smiley thanks again!

I realize they can be taken down and moved very quickly, I guess I wasn't paying close enough attention to that price point. Anyone know if you can look at the full MtGox order book somewhere? I'd be interested in taking a look at it. BTW the wall is under 12K btc now.

Lemme refine my thought process further for academic sake...What if the sell wall was moved as a reaction to market movements? Perhaps traders had a feeling a downturn was coming and needed to liquidate their BTC into dollars to avoid losses so they lowered their ask. While I might have been wrong in this instance, I do stand by my thoughts on bids/sells congregating around nice even numbers.  I mean look at the orders at 5.4 and 5.2 you see walls the size of the one at 6.0, I truly believe there is a reason for this and it is not necessarily manipulation.

I think what people also have to remember when dealing with these types of 'walls' is that it is very likely that more then one person made asks at $6.00. I assume you are using Clark Moody for your real-time data? Clark Moody combines bids of the same value so that they look like huge walls placed by one person while in reality it is simply a price point which people chose to sell their BTC at. Think about human psychology, we like nice round, even numbers because they are aesthetically/psychologically pleasing; which is also why when I make a bid or ask I use this fact to my advantage.

While fake walls can be a product of manipulation, I believe that in most instances it can be explained in other ways....anyways just my 2 cents.

Saw this thread and had to reply.

I used get-bitcoins to buy my first bitcoins, around $100 worth, and the transaction went super smoothly and was completely problem free. I simply placed an order on there website, brought money to a Bank of America, gave them money (no ID required), they gave me a receipt, and I walked out the door. Next I simply took a picture of the receipt given to me by the teller and emailed it to get-bitcoin...an hour or so later and I received my funds.

I highly recommend get-bitcoins as are, from my experience, a very professional outfit.

[WTS/T] US Silver Coins:Walking Liberty/Silver Eagle, JFK 1964, and lots more
by
buck92
on 26/01/2012, 02:38:02 UTC
Hello, I am offering for sale various types of US silver coins minted between 1936 and 1969. These coins are in circulated condition with some looking much better then others, some are dirty or worn but still retain their full value as silver bullion. I am asking for the spot value of the silver included inside of the coins plus the exact cost of shipping by USPS: for example a 1964 JFK Silver Half Dollar is 90% silver, my asking price would simply be 90% of the weight of the coin which is silver (the other 10% is copper, which I won't include in my price). Below is a list of the coins I have for sale or trade:

13 - 1964 Kennedy Half Dollars -90% silver
53 - 1665-1969 Kennedy Half Dollars -40% silver
1 - 1941-1945 Walking Liberty/Silver Eagle Half Dollars -90% silver
26 - 1936-1964 Washington Quarters -90% silver
9 - 1951-1963 Ben Franklin Half Dollars -90% silver
9 - 1936-1945 Mercury Dimes -90% silver
7 - Pre-1964 Rosevelt Dimes -90% silver

Please follow this link to see a photo gallery of the coins (let me know if you want more pictures of specific coins)

Edit:More detailed pictures of the Liberty Half Dollars: http://imgur.com/a/KNq4W

You can find the value of these coins here: http://www.coinflation.com/silver_coin_values.html
Again I will only charge you for the weight of the silver, consider the other metals a freebie. As far as trade is concerned, I am willing to make trades for valid gift cards such as Amazon or other stores I use often. Just give me an offer and I will let you know If I will accept it or not. Any other trades may still be accepted simply PM me or post here and we may be able to make a deal, but aside from a gift card here or there I am mostly looking to sell for Bitcoins or MtGox dollars. Again PM me or post any offers and we can go from there. Thank You, I appreciate you taking the time to read my post.

I have not made a transactions on these forums yet but here is a link to my eBay account where I have 100% positive feedback, feel free to contact me there.

For example, if 500 people are willing to invest $1,000 they would have equal power to one person with $500,000 if they acted in a coordinated fashion.

How the hell you gonna pull that one off?

My thoughts exactly, plus all it takes is one rouge trader to screw over the others in the coordinated trading pool.

I glanced at the socket.io documentation and found what I needed to make the connection automatically reconnect after a disconnection. You should see messages in the Console at the bottom of the screen informing you of the progress of the reconnect attempts.

Let me know if the new code works for you. Maybe this refresh will be your last  Cool

Awesome! good looking out Clark. The connection automatically reset for me at 7pm est.

For a while earlier today when the volume started to kick up it would work on one computer and not the other, no matter how many times I refreshed.  Then an hour later it began working on both my laptop and desktop, weird stuff. But right now it is working flawlessly for me.

Also I believe MtGox resets peer connections to their api every odd hour, which has nothing to do with Clark moody. Clark mentioned an abnormal amount of refreshes around those hours in another thread.
