Re: Need a teacher on add GPU Voltage to BIOS, I will pay the teacher :)

So I noticed on 3 different cards that I tried to add the voltage offset to, that the FF 00 01 07 0C does not show up after doing (in HxD) Edit > Select Block and putting in the beginning offset from the bios.text (atombiosreader file) and the length.  Am I correct in the statement that these cards will not take a voltage offset at all or am I missing some more knowledge to force this in?

You need to check what the voltage controller is, and then add in a corresponding voltage offset then change the table offsets and whatnot to make sure the bios is still valid

So adding in the voltage offset I got, following the above video in the thread I have been able to successfully add it to a rx 480 Nitro+ 4gb Elpida and also to a MSI rx 570 4gb Hynix.  Following the same exact process on my RX 480 Sapphire Nitro (non +), MSI rx 570 Gaming X 4gb Hynix and MSI rx 580 8gb I could not add it.

For example the MSI rx 580 8gb the VoltageOffsetInfo starts at abea with a length of 0034 but after adding the values I do not have FF 00 01 07 0C in the changed values like I did on the other 2 cards.

To the master's of this thread, I would like to revisit a few questions if anyone is willing to answer.  When it comes to modding straps with all the options of settings that can be changed, is their a guide to what values can be adjusted.  I went back and looked at a few mod bios I have received over the last couple months, different cards and different mem types to better understand what was changed and why.

My biggest issue with understanding is do you guys who have the knowledge to manually change mem straps use a guide tool or has it been purely trial and error over the last few years?

Not asking anyone to give away secret sauce, just want to know if I am wasting my time looking for helpful guides or just start shooting in the dark!

So thanks for this video very helpful

If anyone is willing to help I am unsure how to calculate how to extend the length since I added 4 values.  It is stated in the video that they started with 2C 01 so it needed to change to 30 01.  My value for my nitro + rx 480 Elpida 4gb is 5a 00 with a length of 5E.  Unsure how to calculate what to extend it to.

any help is greatly appreciated!

------------------EDIT--------------------
So I was finally able to get this to work.  I realized that the length is in the first 2 hex char not 4.  So once I found an online hex to decimal converter I was able to calculate my length.  I continued on to the rest of the video without issues.  I did not save a lot but total on my 5 card rig I was able to shave 30 - 40 watts off but the biggest savings is I was able to get each card down about 8 - 10 degrees in temp.  It was interesting with the voltage offset added and opening the rom up in srbpolaris, I was able to select a range of offsets in VDDC which I have not noticed on any other cards I have.

I set mine to -100, I could probably get more but ill sit on it to see stability.

Always look at what miner reports, not pool.

thats why I posted both, smOS in green is the miner,, it closely matches the pool

So I played around with nerdralphs tool for my msi 570 armor oc 4gb with hynix.  I copied 1500 up on both Micron-Elpida and hynix.  I then took the copied value and input in nerdralphs tool for both memory sets and pasted the output in 1625 1750 and 2000 on both memory sets.

Micron-Elpida

Can anyone tell me why I am getting 39 MH on this card now and should I be concerned?  I have watched it for about an hour and it is pretty steady at 39 with an occasional drop to 34.5

I am using smOS so unsure how to check for hardware errors

Linux Client Alpha, Next week!

This is not the OS, yet. >> Client like minerstat.com on windows.

 Wink

If the linux client is ready next week, what linux distro do we need to install to best test, I would like to get away from smOS by the time you release alpha client

F8 is -8 actually not -50.
Try putting that value to 0, and see what V you get really.

I thought that -8 x 6.25mv = -50mv unless my maths are wrong?

That would be 0xF8 x 6.25mV, not 0xF8 like you said earlier. Smiley
Did you try changing F8 to 00 in hex editor and checking the voltage in gpu-z as i suggested ?
It will be higher.. for 1 step, which is 25mV..

So for this card you are trying, the voltage offset can be found at 0xF8, is this a standard for all cards that can be offset and if it is not the standard hex value, how did you determine 0xF8 for this specific card

it's not fake, but it won't work on every card.
+ there are things that can be done with i2c commands but can not be done directly in bios IMO.

There are, like VRM switching frequency. I wrote some tools that do this for me on common VRM controllers.

So every card could have hacked I2C commands to offset the voltage, with the right tools?

doktor83, can you tell me how to find the voltage offset equivalent portion in your tool so set a negative value?  In windows I can use watttool and set my card at -18 and shave 40 watts off.  I have come across a few threads talking about I2C but I dont fully understand how to find that specific value even after using atombiosreader to find voltageobjectinfo and then searching in hex workshop.  Following a few other threads from a google search I see you have helped others with it.  Is it possible to get some explanation on what I need to do?

Most BIOS don't have it built in. You'd probably need to hack it in, and thats assuming you have one of the specific voltage controllers. Now having a program that did all the hacking for you... that would be aces

There's the point.
Different controller types, different pointers, too much work.. Smiley
You can add VDDC in VOI, recalculate everything, etc.. in hex editor.
BUt that's still no guarantee that it will work Smiley

So with that mentality is the voltage offset fake when it comes to using watttool in Windows?  I made the assumption that if I can set it in watttool, that it exists in hex.

So I know I have a ways to go, but I spent last night going through this thread and a few articles on other pages off of this thread.  I know this thread was created to help people understand so that is what I am trying to do, i am not hear to ask others to create my values.  Few questions to start off. So understanding some of the posts it seems tightening the timings is more memory specific than card specific.  So I can create a value from a rx 480 sapphire with hynix and it could work on a gigabyte rx480 with hynix?

Yes, for instance a 4GB memory strap for hynix will work across brands like Sapphire, HIS, MSI as long as the card has the same 4GB hynix chips for memory.

Quote
When looking at timings for 4gb vs 8gb, changes can be made in different places.  For example on my xfx rx 480 8gb with samsung I see only samsung timings but in my sapphire rx480 nitro+ 4gb, I see places I can change for either samsung, or elpida/hynix.

Most 570 cards come with multiple timing sets even though they have only one kind of memory. In such cases, only mod the timing set that is relevent to the kind of momory the card is using (identifying what the memory is by looking at the stock strap comes with xexperience)

Quote
I am using srbpolaris / polaris and even with my 570 I see changes on 4gb cards being made at the 2: section for elpida/hynix vs 1: for samsung.  I know that is just strap copying, but gotta start at basics.  In srbpolaris (I know most of you guru's use linux, and it is not my forte, but will work on learning) I am able to analyze a strap and I am seeing alot of sections I can change.  After reading some more through the thread, I see that it is not always a specific set of values for every card you can change, seems I need to learn the cheat sheet for what each value does.  It seems FAW is one that can always be set to 0 but I dont see 32AW (at leasnt not in srbpolaris). TRP can be changed it seems pretty consistently throughout all cards?  Also I am unsure how to decode the MISC.  I could be using the wrong tool, and if so I just need to spend more time on what else I can use.  Any guidance you all can provide would be really helpful and appreciated.

Use nerdraplhs tool linked earlier in this thread, he posted it as a simple weblink that you can easily access.

So I tried nerdralphs tool and seemed to work ok.  Something I am confused about is how can I change the voltage offset in the rom.  For example I am testing with my xfx triple x 8gb card.  I took the 1750 and 2000 straps and put them in his tool and copied the new value in polaris.  Now when i start up the miner and open watttool I can set the voltage offset in windows watttool to -18 and shave about 40 watts.  I am unsure how to set this in the bios because I cant find an equal tool for linux to set the voltage offset.  I came across a few threads talking about I2C but I dont fully understand where that is and how I can change it to stick in the bios.

MSI 570 Armor & GamingX 4gb findings and questions

Both have hynix memory

570 Armor 4gb OC Best results came with copying 2:1500 to 2:1625, 2:1750 and 2:2000  I set the Undervolt in watttool to -16 and I am able to achieve 27.2 in smOS, clocks set to 1161/1975  gpu-z shows 114w

570 GamingX 4gb Best results came with copying 2:1500 to 2:1625, 2:1750 and 2:2000  I was not able to undervolt in watttool as everytime I change the undervolt value it goes back to NA  I am able to achieve 28mh, clocks set to 1161/2010 gpu-z shows 94w

Has anyone had any better luck with these cards and if so can you please share settings in polaris.

How can you edit the bios? I cant even read the memory frequency right in polaris bios editor. Im stuck in 24 MH/s
