I've figured out the problem and have updated the OP to reflect this.
Just to reiterate,
If you have an account that has used a student discount codes (or most likely any discount code), these codes DO NOT work and you have to make a new account to use them!!!

Digitalocean has very strict verification procedure. I couldn't redeem this code.

Nobody is going to pay more for something that is still free.
well the baseline (at least 2 months ago it was) should be $20. i sold many $100 codes for that price.

i do have a light on, my camera on my phone is just awful.
The image looks photo shopped, not to be mean or anything.
Its not, i just cropped it to remove my tiny finger.
