You can directly search Zxing barcode scanner. I'm using it now and I think it's good, especially for java.There are cross platform webcam solutions, although the multi platform part may narrow the usable hardware list. We definitely intent to support webcam interfaces for QR code scanning in the future, so don't despair just yet.

I think if you look back at the history, iGotSpots put Spots on the back burner for something else he was working on. It was a payment service called PaySHA. I don't think it ever went anywhere though. So, I guess he moved on to where he's at now. It really doesn't matter at this point... Aside from launching the coin, and maintaining it for about a year, he has no involvement at this point.
