Re: Earn merit by telling us about the dangers in using 3rd party wallets.

When I was looking answers for this initial question (Of course I googled and read some documents, Sources are mentioned below) I got to know few new things regarding Bitcoin wallets. Since many of the replies converge to the answer I am not going to go through that same stuff over and over again.

Since this is the forum for beginners, maybe start by defining what a 3rd party wallet is...  Embarrassed

As clover 12 suggested here I thought to give a brief Idea as much as I understand. (Please feel free to give suggestions and corrections since I am not an expert nor had any prior experience and this reply only depicts two hours of googling and digging in crypto websites.)

For the simplicity of understanding, I am going to use an Answers and Questions approach.

Q1 ) First of all what is a crypto wallet?

As you already know we need a digital wallet to store any cryptocurrency. A wallet is basically a software which stores private and public keys (Two Cryptography methods used in encryption) and interacts with various blockchain to enable users to do digital currency transactions.

NB:

Unlike traditional ‘pocket’ wallets, digital wallets don’t store currency. In fact, currencies don’t get stored in any single location or exist anywhere in any physical form. All that exists are records of transactions stored on the blockchain. In other words, this is like a huge ledger where we note down all the expenses and incomes.

Q2) The Ops question is about third-party wallets, Then There must be another type of wallets, Is it?

Here are some of my opinions, and please correct me if I am wrong.

I consider anything other than a core wallet to be a 3rd party wallet.
Not all wallets offer exchange facilities.
Not all wallets are stored on the web, but obviously you will need web access to make and receive payments.
Some wallets store balances like a bank, and you don't own specific Bitcoin transactions with them.

As OP has said here He is referring to all the wallets other than a core wallet as a third-party wallet.

Q3) What is a Core wallet then?

Bitcoin Core is the software that runs the entire bitcoin network. Included in the Bitcoin Core software is a secure digital wallet that can be used to store, send and receive bitcoin. By choosing to store your bitcoin in the Bitcoin Core wallet, you can contribute to the decentralized bitcoin network by validating transactions and storing a copy of the blockchain.
It takes a little bit of technical knowledge to get started with the Bitcoin Core wallet, but when it comes to security the original bitcoin wallet is still hailed by many as one of the safest places to keep your funds.
And do not get into a false sense, as everything in life Core wallet too is far from being perfect. It too has pros and cons. While the high level of privacy and security being the most visible pros, having to download a file of size around 150GB (This is free to download and works well with most of the common Operating systems Including Windows 7,8,10 versions, Linux, Mac Os and also with raspberry pi V.1, V.2), having to store this large file  in your local machine with limited resources and requirement to know your way around the Bitcoin core would make a beginners life bit harder.

Q4) Okay, Core wallets sound good, I wanna set up a one, tell me how to do it.

If you still need to go with a Core wallet (Actually the preferred way among experts in the field) here is a guide for you.

Q5)  I don’t need that so-called valuable information! Just tell me about third-party wallets!!

Unlike in a core wallet, the information can be accessed from anywhere since the wallet is saved in a remote cloud server. As everything is on the web, this too is a security vulnerability. Since the drawbacks are well covered in above replies I am not going go through the same stuff over and over again.  I’ll tell you the answer for the exact opposite question which OP asked.

Q6) What are the advantages of using a third party wallet?

You do not have to have a technical knowledge at all, Go to the website and enter a password BAM! You have a wallet.
You do not need to do any update manually. You may have thousands of problems but maintaining the blockchain file, updating it won’t be one of them. It will be taken care by the wallet hosting site. There will be no emails, text messages or pop-ups telling you an update needs to be downloaded.

Obviously, as OP has mentioned clearly using a third party wallet is a huge risk, as in all cases High convenient comes with High risk. There are numerous cases has been reported throughout the history of Bitcoin regarding security vulnerabilities with use of third-party wallets.

Please go through the answer of napsterz(https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4522043.msg40737106#msg40737106) as it seems to be covering the OP’s question.
Cheers!

Hey buddy this is a great one. Thanks for sharing.  It is indeed a great experience. We hope to continually be at the right projects all the time

i'm a new bie, thank for your info
Please do not hesitate to ask anything.
Here is my second article on the same subject.

Being a bounty hunter is not an easy task. There are scams, failed projects everywhere. Bounty hunters has to be careful more than ever. As a bounty hunter myself I thought to share my experience with other bounty hunters in here. I will talk about my bounty experience and my opinion about certain bounty managers and certain bounty campaigns I got to work.

There are two very important things to consider when it comes to selecting a proper bounty campaign!

1)   Potential of the Project
2)   Bounty Manager

In this article I am going to focus on Potential of the Project and next article will be solely on bounty managers and my personal experience with them.

You are going to spend your time and money on this campaign, if it fails all the hard work you did is in vain. Therefore it is a must to do a proper background research on the ICO. There are few methods to get an idea about the project.

1) Referring an ICO Rating Site

You can refer to ICO rating websites as it is the most straightforward and easy way. These websites (Please refer to annex 1) rate the upcoming ICOs. But it may not 100% accurate, even the most experienced people do mistakes as well these sites too. And also many of these sites charge a fee to publish an ICO in there site. Money can slightly change the rating of a particular project.

My Experience #1 :
I started to participate in,
FTEC Bounty campaign (Bounty Thread : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3168899.0)
SkyFchain Bounty campaign (Bounty Thread : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2996537.0)
Inpactor Bounty campaign (Bounty Thread : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3286739.0 )
Eternal Trust Bounty campaign (Bounty Thread : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3137885 )

after observing their great ratings, (All three had given more than 4.5 out of 5 by the icobench.com). As all above three campaigns/ICOs are still ongoing I cannot say much about the reward yet. And as you can imagine I hope that these ICO rating sites are correct!

My Experience #2 :

After referring to ICObench.com I saw an ICO with 4.1 score out of 5 named,
Unibright (ICO site: https://unibright.io/ Bounty thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2994777.0)

The project team looked good, they even had a partnership with mighty Microsoft. I participated for 2 weeks and got 79 tokens! Oh wait, You need the value from US dollars? Last time I checked those 79 tokens worth $4.47 !!!

My Experience #3 :

I participated in a bounty campaign called

RootBlock Chain (Bounty Thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3016577.0-root)

for 9 weeks there were no ratings about the project in recognized ICO rating sites. As days go by I was the second largest stakes holder in the bounty campaign according to the bounty spreadsheet. And guess what, they cancelled the bounty program day before yesterday (16/062018)! They announce that they are going to refund the investors and for bounty hunters, they get nothing but the total disappointment and agony!

2) Going through the project whitepaper and Team members

If you have the technical skills and time the best thing is to go through the project whitepaper and identify the project’s pros and cons, which will give you a proper overview. And the project members are pretty important too as the final outcome almost depends on their hands! Do a little background search about the core members and look for their achievements. Team is the strength of a project!

My Experience #4:

I joined a Facebook bounty campaign named

UCHIT (Bounty Thread : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3167782.0 )

and worked for more than 9 weeks. I did not check anything about their project nor team members. But it is revealed that all the photos of their team in the website (https://uchit.info/) [yes, I know their website looks pretty wonderful, but…]

This scam is revealed in here > https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4467813.5

3) Following a veteran

One of the very efficient way to find a great bounty campaign is this. I always gaze upon on that shiny badges and unbelievable merit count of those legendary members, hero members, Senior Members with amazement in my eyes! Then I look into their signature, if it represents an Altcoin ICO I do a quick research and find the bounty campaign and participate in it.

My Experience #5:

Recently I saw a legendary member with more than 1500 merits wearing a fancy signature said

Impressio (Bounty thread : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3350550.0 )

I decided to follow that bounty and I am hoping that legendary member is not wrong about the project!

(Actually this method is not preferred, but as newbies you may have to go to methods like that until you get proper knowledge and experience about the industry! )

PS: Always check the project’s social media activities, website maintenance, Special announcements in ANN thread, Telegram group and their interaction with the investors or bounty hunters. If you smell something fishy do not hesitate and send a message here! https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1980983
I have many other information, but I will stop now. Feel free to ask anything, give any suggestions, give any corrections. I am more than happy to cooperate!
Cheers to all the hardworking bounty hunters out there!

Joining bounty is an investment. You are not paying your money but you pay your time, your work and other tasks to sit in front of computer for doing bounty. Put yourself on the side of investor who invest money, choose ICO and bounty campaign like you will invest your money in this, so you will take bounty campaign and ICO carefully. It is not 100% of all your investment or bounty campaign are good and legal but it will reduce your risk to minimum.

Yes of course! Investors invest money and we, bounty hunters invest our time and effort!

Also as I mentioned in a previous post, be aware of scammers, participants in your bounty might try to scam you. Someone tried it on me, they made the manager change my ethereum address by impersonating me. They had a google form to fill for complaints and someone changed my address. Thankfully I always check it at the end of the bounty, you should too, always check your addresses on the spreadsheet. You should add that to your guide.

Wow! That is a seriously valuable piece of information, I am pretty sure i would end scammed pretty easily if someone pulled that off on me. Never knew about such kind of scamming and thank you very much for bringing that up!

Engineer Vs Scientist !
by
chathu789
on 18/06/2018, 11:09:56 UTC
Who is an Engineer? Who is a Scientist?

Today in our university one of our lecturers asked what is the difference between a Scientist and an engineer. I gave a thought on this and did some digging and these are the similarities and differences I found!

According to the founding father of nanotechnology Eric Drexler, The essence of science is inquiry; the essence of engineering is design. Scientific inquiry expands the scope of human perception and understanding; engineering design expands the scope of human plans and results.
Both scientists and engineers contribute to the world of human knowledge, but in different ways. Scientists use the scientific method to make testable explanations and predictions about the world. A scientist asks a question and develops an experiment, or set of experiments, to answer that question. Engineers use the engineering design process to create solutions to problems. An engineer identifies a specific need: Who need(s) what because why? And then, he or she creates a solution that meets the need.
Science creates questions, while engineering creates solutions. Though this is not a hard rule, science, in general, deals with observing and coming up with hypotheses and theories, while engineering helps to create solutions to answer those questions. So the two truly do complement each other. The scientific method and the engineering method really do apart even from the beginning.

If we put much more thought into the differences and similarities between scientific method and the engineering method we can see that Scientists seek unique, correct theories, and if several theories seem plausible, all but one must be wrong, while engineers seek options for working designs, and if several options will work, success is assured. While scientists seek theories that apply across the widest possible range (the Standard Model applies to everything), engineers seek concepts well-suited to particular domains (liquid-cooled nozzles for engines in liquid-fueled rockets). As Scientists seek theories that make precise, hence brittle predictions, engineers seek designs that provide a robust margin of safety. And most importantly in science a single failed prediction can disprove a whole theory, no matter how many tests it has passed, while in engineering one successful design can validate a concept, no matter how many tests it has failed so far!
Because science and engineering face opposite directions, they ask different questions. Scientific inquiry faces toward the unknown, and this shapes the structure of scientific thought; although scientists apply established knowledge, the purpose of science demands that they look beyond it.

Engineering design, by contrast, shuns the unknown. In their work, engineers seek established knowledge and apply it in hopes of avoiding surprises. In engineering, the fewer experiments, the better.

Dear sir, I went through the spreadsheet and i saw some of the participants with invalid or null entries. If there is a vacant slot I am more than happy to participate.
I have 4400 followers on my twitter account.

There are few methods to do that!
    • Submitting to a google form

Some managers ask the hunters to submit the links to a google form where you are supposed to attend weekly. This is pretty straightforward and make sure not to submit a report twice!
    • Reporting in the thread as a reply to the Bounty Topic

In some bounty campaigns hunters are asked to submit the report as thread replies. There are three basic methods in this!
    • Always editing the first message
In here bounty managers specifically ask hunters to edit the first week's report and not to create new reports. The initial message must be edited weekly which gives us one unique report with all the links classified in a weekly manner!

    • Quoted Report
In here we use the quote function to display the previous weeks' reports along with the new week's report. When we use the quote function it creates a new message whereas the report link is not a constant within the bounty campaign.

    • No Quote, Just new a new report for new week

In here the s[ecifically ask hunters to not to quote, no embedded reports, only the links of this week!
• No reports at all

Some bounty managers do not ask for reports at all, they manually go through our social media accounts and validate those entries. But be careful, most of these campaigns there is a post/tweet limit. Look whether they have said a thing like "During the week there can not be more than 100 posts shared by the participant" or any other similar thing.

Automated bouncy platforms such as bountyhive, bountyplatform, bounty0x also do not request reports as all of the entries are automatically validated!
N:B
Always save all the links to facebook shares in a file, always save the links of the reports week by week (For edited report type only one unique link address), Keep this document until the delivery of stakes!

Bounty managers are also humans, They can make mistakes, therefore being cautious is better than being sorry!

Interesting story, it happened to me same as you in begining. I started to learn about cryptocurrencies in Jan this year and every night I dream about my investment turn to lambo  Cheesy.
Beside investment, i did bounty to get more tokens. As you mention, twitter and facebook campaign now are a lot of participants. If possible, you can move to youtube/video campaign and signature campaign that will worth for your hunt.
For 4 months as bounty hunter, all i got around ~ $150  Cheesy, so sad but im keep going because i believe in long-term holding.

Did you earn $150? You are well ahead of me, brother! Congrats and best of luck in all the future encounters!! If you know any good bounties do not hesitate to mention here  Wink  Wink

This is your personal experience with bounty hunting but not a guide to beginners in bounty campaign. As a bounty hunter, nothing is certain. You only get payed if the project become a success and it get enlisted otherwise all the tokens you get become a shitcoins.

I am hoping to extend this article further and next article will be on bounty managers! I hope to cover best-reputed managers and also the other way around! And thank you very much sir for the advise!   Smiley

Very nice man, the good guide for newbie as me. I am trying to join some bounty, but too much bounty for choose.

I usually Follow legendary members' lead! And projects of Yahoo62278, Hotachy, Wapinter, Julerz12 are said to be best! Check the ICO ratings of the project by ICObench or ICOmarks before joining the bounty, That will give some idea about the strength of the project!
