Re: 0.56% of BTC market cap are now held by public listed companies

Yeah once we have identified the amount of BTC obtained by Tesla we will update this list and re-order it based on today's value holdings.
We are keeping it to public companies for now for simplicity, but definitely open to including others like Grayscale too

Lets see how long it takes from here for the next public company to have a BTC holding strategy, whether big or small it will give sign on this trend

0.56% of BTC market cap are now held by public listed companies

Yesterday Tesla announced that they are purchasing $1.5B worth of bitcoin. It is unknown at what price they are purchasing at this moment, however excluding Tesla we are seeing 0.56% of the total market cap of BTC held by public companies. It is expected that the number may continue to grow as more public companies consider whether to hold bitcoins or not as part of corporate treasuries.

The other risks is how would governments and regulators respond to this as more private companies are looking to acquire bitcoin over fiat currencies

Are you planning to have dinner/lunch/breakfast (depending on where you are) with you favorite people in your life?

We are celebrating it by writing this kind of infographic once every 4 years to share with the world

We truly hope that something like this can help explain to anyone especially beginners what "halving" really is - its really really simple!

Re: What Happens to Miners After Bitcoin Halving?
by
coingecko
on 05/05/2020, 08:31:34 UTC
Based on our guess, here is what might happen
- Some miners will leave mining bitcoin as they see their mining profit sinks (if bitcoin price doesnt appreciate to make up the difference)
- This would cause the hashrate to decrease in a higher mining difficulty, Bitcoin network would temporarily be disrupted
- Miners may either leave and sell their SHA256 operations to another profitable bitcoin miner, maintaining network hashrate
- Or they may start to profit switch among SHA-256 coins, this is a function of Bitcoin Cash and BSV price and liquidity

In any case we are eager to know more too, and thats why we are inviting folks from Poolin and Slush to share their thoughts within the mining space post-halving at http://coingecko.com/meetup

Re: Bitcoin Halving 2020 Explained - An Infographic
by

The presentation of the material is quite pleasant to the eye, but I would also recommend making a table showing the number of bitcoins for the decades that were / or will be mined, that people clearly saw how to greatly reduce bitcoin mining in the near future.

Thanks for the feedback! We can consider working on that next, referring to numbers right? Not graph per se

Good infographic @coingecko, I usually used your website too for check bitcoin price or new altcoins  Smiley

No offense, but as far I know, create duplicate topic is prohibited in this forum. You have post about infographic yesterday https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5243876.0
And you should choose which thread you want to delete  Smiley

Thanks! do let us know if you have any suggestions or feedback.

My bad, brought it up in that section first thinking it might be a good general discussion - but it was also good as we get some very interesting and constructive feedback to improve the infograph.
Then created one here because they recommended that this be in the eyes for people searching for beginner materials.
Hopefully we are adding value here on both sides. Hope mod would let it slide, or at least issue a warning first so i can really delete it.

Nice, I saw your team and the founder in my country some time back. Didn't know you guys also have an account here too.

That's cool, its great to be here! Where was it if you dont mind me asking?

OP, thanks for including "always do your own research" on the bit about price appreciation!

I have seen a lot of people thinking that halving means a guaranteed price increase, when this is not necessarily the case. When everyone expects something to happen, that means it is almost always priced in beforehand, and when the event itself actually happens, there can even be a small price drop - the maxim 'buy the rumour, sell the news'.

Halving should mean a price increase, and arguably past halving events have led to increases, but the more it happens, the more people anticipate the same happening next time, and so buy up bitcoin ahead of the event, which drives up the price before the halving actually happens.

Yeah, everyone is expecting some BTC pump even in the time before the halving and then short dump after the halving. That's the best example of "buy the rumor, sell the news". I think that after the short dump that will happen after the halving we could see a slow but steady rise. But WTFDIK, do your own research Grin

Yea totally, there are varying reasons for a price action.
Most people think that it has already been priced in, if there is volatility during halving it is most likely speculators coming in

Thanks for all the wonderful feedback and we are updating the infographic accordingly! Appreciate them!

Yes we aimed this infographic for beginners. We believe that most people should at least have a basic understanding of the halving event, as there can be lots of confusion.
We figured that pros will probably research further to get the information they seek.

No matter what the outcome of the halving would be to the price, we do hope everyone stay excited about it!  Grin

This kind of thing happen once every 4 years, its like a sighting a shooting star ☆彡
