Re: CryptoSec.info is now ChainSec.io

The site contains useful information, but at least try a little with the interface, and indirect promotion of ledger may lose your credibility. I am not saying that there is a problem with promotion, but put a clear statement that this part is paid advertising.
Thanks for the tip. Just to be clear, it's not a direct sponsorship; but I earn a small amount from referral purchases.

What is the reason for choosing the new name? The old name sounds better.
I think the old name sounds better as well. The change was purely for the TLD. .io is simply far better than .info

$4 billion lost in total from DeFi Exploits so far. Guesses for 2023?
by

As of today, there are a total of 131 DeFi exploits that have occurred, with lost funds amounting to a total of approximately $4 billion at the time of these exploits. $2 billion lost from 2022 alone.

So far in 2023, we currently have 8 exploits with a total of $137 million lost. Any rough guesses for the end of 2023?

CryptoSec.info >>> ChainSec.io

After a good amount of thinking, I decided to rebrand the CryptoSec.info to ChainSec.io.

The reason being that .info domains seem to look scammy for a lot of people, and knowing that we're in the cryptocurrency space which is full of scammers, I won't be surprised if a lot of people look at CryptoSec.info as something suspicious. Unfortunately CryptoSec .com/.org/.net/.io are already taken so I had to rebrand to something else.

Anyway, to the few people who always link to CryptoSec.info when topics concerning security or privacy arise, I appreciate it a lot. All CryptoSec articles automatically 301 redirects to ChainSec so all those article links you lovely gentlemen/women posted will still work.

I know my website is just one small pawn in the grand scheme of things, but every small bit counts! I'll continue to work on the website to make crypto security as simple as possible for the masses. Thank you all and have a great productive day!

I don't see why you have changed the domain. NotYourKeys.org was certainly a better brand name for the informational purpose you tried to build it for.
No offense, but I'm not going to wear the link to your website as I don't think is organized and clean enough for newbies. However I will join the movement and add "Not your keys, not your Bitcoin" as my personal text.

Good luck and congrats for the initative! I'm sure you can make a better job with the design if you invest a little more effort Wink

NotYourKeys.org is a great domain undoubtedly. But to keep everything on one website, I decided to host the page on the main website. NotYourKeys.org redirects to CryptoSec(now ChainSec) though, so people can keep on recommending the NotYourKeys.org URL.

Sorry for the late reply.

Mt. Gox and Bitcoin Exchanges: Did You Know?

Did You Know?

Mt. Gox, one of the first Bitcoin exchanges, was once a leading Bitcoin exchange that apparently handled 70% of all bitcoin transactions, remained one of the most trusted and reputable exchanges for 4 solid years.

-until they got hacked at 2014, with approximately 850,000 bitcoin stolen, leaving their customers with empty *bitcoin* pockets.

If you think current big exchanges such as Binance and Coinbase are "unhackable", you might want to rethink this out.

Hello! Happy new year! Its been a month since I last dare to submit an avatar here and here it goes!! Cheesy
Hey thanks! Added these to the main post. Smiley

A good initiative. The page design is attractive and contains a lot of information. I was hoping that you would add more options like https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet in order for the individual to have more options for downloading wallets.

S/He should also learn some basic things about wallets and how to know scams from the real ones, especially multi-currency wallets like freebitcoin.

If you intend to translate it to Arabic or other languages, send it to me and I may help you with that.
I'll think about adding the bitcoin.org link. I'm just not a fan of some of the wallets listed, but I'll consider it.

As for translations, feel free to translate this thread or the content on the site and post it to your local section. Appreciate it!

It's a very good initiative. I don't have much hope that people will really consider this advice and get interested in what does "not your keys" mean but I still hope that we should try, if it can rescue at least one man, then it worths!

Not your keys - not your coins!
Been carrying the personal text for quite some time now. When I rank up will have the avatar as well.
I decided to wear this avatar while I have free space  Wink
Appreciate it! 🙏

Thanks a lot!

Since I don't have any tough errands today, I might redesign your avatar if you would approve that I can use it as part of my portfolio. I'll do it for free ofcourse since I see your paltform have good intentions. I'll update this comment after an hour or two for the avatar.  Grin
Thanks! Will add your design to the main post once you are done.

What are the dimensions of the avatars in px, I'd like to design another style for free for people to use if they prefer it.
The maximum specifications are 120px wide, 80px tall, and 100 KiB in size.

What is NotYourKeys.org?

A few weeks ago, I decided to create a one-page Basic Bitcoin security guidelines site, as to have a quick link to give to beginners that are just getting started with hodling bitcoin. Yes, more intermediate information like full nodes aren't included, but this is mostly for the beginners, and it's to prevent them from being overwhelmed early on.

If you want to spread the word of the importance of self custody especially now that were closing in to bitcoin's all-time high, you can help out by using the avatars below. This campaign might not get any traction at all, but if it ends up helping one person secure his or her funds then it's totally worth it.

Simply right click and save(imgur link):

I added colour choices just for fun.  Cheesy if you're a lot more creative than me, feel free to create your own avatar design. It's the message that matters, anyway.

or, if your signature campaign requires you to use an avatar, you can just add "NotYourKeys.org" to your personal text area instead.

NOTE: Wearing this avatar is free. It's pretty much a non-profit, so I won't be able to pay anything as this site won't be earning anything anyway.

Yes, the site contains a bitcoin donation address, but I don't expect to receive any donations anyway, and that's totally fine by me.

Final note: If you don't want to help out, that's totally fine. But if you want to help sharing, then in behalf of the community, I really thank you.

Many millionaires and rich people own bitcoin, but for some reason do not talk about it out loud.

This is why:

https://cryptosec.info/wrench-attack/

Nah! It can't be the only reason or even the most important reason for them! Security of funds is an important parameter obviously but that's not the most important reason. I think corporates and billionaires are becoming increasingly fond of bitcoin because of the ROI and its huge upside potential.

Billionaires mean business and profit and bitcoin is the best performing asset of this decade, worldwide! So it makes sense for them to get their hands dirty!

If you read the conversation, it was obviously about rich people not publicizing about bitcoin, not necessarily investing in bitcoin.

I genuinely thank you for the warm welcome of my small project, and thanks a lot of the recommendations. You guys definitely gave valuable information and opinions. Thanks a lot!

Good idea, but there are few things that could be improved.
1. You might want to define "non-custodial", it might be confusing for beginner who isn't native english speaker.
2. Remove ColdCard from list of Hardware Wallet, it's not user friendly at all.
3. Sentence "Hardware > Mobile > Desktop" is a bit ambiguous, add more context or turn it into a short paragraph.
Thanks for this. Was trying to make the page as brief and simple as possible, without realizing that I sacrificed the knowledge part.

Design could be a bit better but i like the whole idea of it
I intentionally made it a one-page as-simple-as-possible content for the beginners with a Medium-like feel, as so they wouldn't be overwhelmed by information and unnecessary designs.

Well done, it can be a very good quick start guide into bitcoin security and OpSec. There are a few subjects which require a lot of study and research but I guess for a privacy-oreinted beginner it's a good place to find more than basic info.
Allow me to suggest an add to your site, regarding point 9
https://bitcoinqna.github.io/noKYConly/

Added!

A recovery seed is definitely not also referred to as a "private key", and if it is, then it is being done so incorrectly. They are two very different things. I would remove the words "private keys" from this sentence.
I'm completely aware that they're different things. What I meant with that part, is that some people use "recovery seed" and "private keys" interchangeably regardless if they're not exactly the same. Though I removed that part to prevent misinterpretation.

One last thing from me: it is definitely fair to suggest using Wasabi Wallet under the Desktop category. Users should be advised that Wasabi Wallet is a different wallet though, focused on privacy. I would not use WW as I use Electrum for example. I guess beginners should first learn about the bitcoin basics and then move onto more advanced tools such as WW. I don't know if it makes sense.
People can still use Wasabi Wallet without using the CoinJoin features.

Re: Applying Basic Math to Secure Your Written Wallet Backups
by
cryptosec.info

What is this, lol, a site called "cryptosec" advises people to use this crappy cipher to protect their seed - what a joke! Even Caesar cipher would be better in this case, because an attacker would have to spend a few miliseconds to bruteforce it.

If some newbie is reading it and thinks it's a good idea, this can easily lead to lose of money in the future, because the method proposed is not encryption, it's just a very weak attempt to hide the seed. Do not use any methods you read from random sites on the Internet and do not invent your own schemes, instead research strong cryptography if you want to truly protect your secrets.

Hey hatshepsut93!

Not sure if you've misunderstood the article, but with all due respect, it was emphasized very clearly on the article AND this topic title that this method is just to make it a bit more difficult for a person to gain access to your funds if they somehow got access to your written word backup paper; and it was also mentioned that applying such method doesn't make storing your word seed online a good idea(because it never is).

In our opinion, using this very simple method is still better than simply nakedly writing your 12-24 word seed on a piece of paper.

Have a great day!

Applying Basic Math to Secure Your Written Wallet Backups
by
cryptosec.info
on 17/08/2019, 16:58:20 UTC
One of the hurdles of using open-source wallets is keeping your recovery seed paper secure and out of reach of peering eyes. We've just recently published an article about a solution that could potentially fix this problem, by using very basic elementary mathematics.

You can read the article here: https://cryptosec.info/written-backup-encryption/

Note that in this article/method, we won't require you to buy anything, download anything, submit anything, or send us anything.

Any feedback is appreciated, especially from the experienced users and bitcoin veterans here on Bitcointalk.

Have a great day!
