Re: If you had $1M USD to setup mining op & sell first contract before 12/31?
by

TRUE STORY from California, USA.

I have a $1M+ short term capital gain (not from crypto) and I would like to (quickly!) put it all into crypto mining business.

I have extensive IT / unix / server experience and I've dabbled a little bit in crypto (very small... coinbase account, bought $1k worth of various, very small).

What would you do if you needed to spend 1 million (primarily on equipment) before christmas??  Huh

I can't imagine buying and deploying (300) RTX 3090's before 12/31 with cooling and power for that massivity solved.

I can't use my garage becase theirs no way I can have enough power setup before 12/31? (only 100A to home).

I used to use colo facilties for dedicated server hosting, but I wouldn't imagine server colo datacenters are are friendly to power/cooling requirements?

How many amps are we talking? Maybe I could quickly rent a warehouse with enough power?. Smiley

What would you guys do??

You'll need a warehouse with 150KW atleast, cant get a new connection on this tight a timeline. You will then need to buy 300 3090's.
These would be spread out in about 50 systems of 6 GPUs each, and I would recommend getting a beefy CPU per system as well, to mine with.
Considering the power draw, aside from the regular PSUs to run the system, you will need to get about a 100 HP1200w Server PSU's, breakout boards, pcie cables, risers, the works.

Now setting up 50 systems in a facility that is ready for them is at max a 4 day job with how easy setup is these days, so once you have everything this is very doable.
3090's arent nearly the most cost effective option though, but considering the tight timeline this is your best option.
If you have some help, you could go with about 450 3080ti's and a warehouse with 200KW and that would be a lot more bang for your buck.

I don't know much about mining, I'm a "beginner" as you say but it seems impossible to me that in less than 2 years the profits drop by 50% on an ASIC...

after if I'm wrong tell me ^^

And this is precisely why everyone on this thread is telling you that you know NOTHING, John Snow. Go do some homework.

Re: What 9GPU+ Gaming Motherboards are you guys using?
by

No gaming motherboards comes with many pcie slots since they aren't build for mining but for gaming only, the highest you will find on gaming motherboards are 4-5pcie slots, few has two pcie x16 slots for crossfire and some don't

As mentioned in the original post, Z270f's (and several other Z170, Z97 etc before them) GAMING motherboards, that I was using come with 7 PCIe slots, and 2 m.2 slots that with adapters allowed use of 9 GPUs. I however was looking for more recent alternatives, since these are hard to find now. No point in typing out a response when you dont know the answer, is there?

True, is really important the CPU lanes, right now you can get a Atlhon 3000g but only have 6 lanes, you can use it only with 6 gpu with the 4g decode option, the only way to max it is using a pcie extender x1pcie to x4pcie for a total of 9 gpu. (some ppl say that found a way to use 2 extenders on 1 motherboard, not sure about that, i need 2 adapters to test that). Remember 1 to 4 pcie adapters are pci splitter, they dont add more lanes... in other words it divide the bandwidth of 1 lane to 4.

Umm the 3000G has 20 PCIe lanes, but 8 are reserved for the chipset (x450/470), 8 for the x16 slot and 4 for the m.2 slot. Technically you should be able to use 12 GPUs with the 3000G if you disable integrated graphics, but I'm yet to find an X470 motherboard that will work with a 1x4 splitter and go beyond 8 GPUs.

- Asrock B450 Steel Legend AMD  : x6pcie (2x16slot + 4 x1slots) + 2m2 nvme slots
- MSI B450 Gaming Plus Max : x6pcie (2 x16slot & 4 x1) + 1 m2 nvme slot

Thank you, this is the answer I was looking for. We can add the Asus B450-F Gaming to the above list as well, since that too has 6 PCIe slots.
B450 chips however will only let you use one of the two m.2 slots while the 6 PCIe slots are populated, so that brings us to a total of 7 on these boards.

That appears to be the limit for now - 7 GPUs. Untill we switch to Intel and factor in 1x4 PCIe splitters.

I know sata is usually not recommended but will I get away with them for my setup or I will burn or damage something t ??

But thanks for ur comments let me see how can I source a psu where u live…

Little to no difference between Sata or Molex as long as you are pluggin git directly into the riser for lower load GPUs, just dont use any pcie/sata/molex adapters that came with the riser - those will burn.

so its ok to use the Molex 4-pin cables to power the risers instead of 6-pin cables and reserve those for the cards only ?

Yes, its fine unless its a high power draw GPU ( in your case, the 3060ti's are safer to use with Molex powered risers than the 3070's, so use the 1 remaining pcie slot with a splitter to connect the two 3070 risers to them)

Quote
can i use the same cable strand for multiple risers or one riser per cable ?

When using molex and sata, use only one strand per riser ( even if the strand has 3-4 connectors )

Quote
finally i did the math for your last mentioned point: 5 cards x 135~w per card (of course they are power limited) = 675 W total | and 75w per riser x 5 risers = 375 W
total power needed 1050 W
are you saying i can Not use a 1000w PSU or even a 1050w PSU for 24x7 mining ??

Your math isnt entirely accurate, risers dont always consume 75w thats generally the rated maximum. Figure out a way to measure accurate total power consumption at the wall where you plug the psu in (buy a power meter or use an household appliance stabaliser etc) for accurate measurement, and decide on PSU wattage accordingly. For your 5 GPU's, the risers should be consuming no more than 35-40W each, so the total should be 280W max for the risers, and 675W for the GPUs, making the total 955W which is dangerously close to the PSU's limit, and will likely cause failure in a few days of running. Also remember PSU is rated at 1000W on 240v, on 120v it can only manage about 750W.

one last weird question, are other 4-pin Molex Cables from other PSUs exchangeable ? not sure about this PSU how many Molex CABLES it comes with TBH and i am extremely limited on my options here in Turkey:
https://www.sinerji.gen.tr/powerboost-1000w-warrior-80-gold-tam-moduler-guc-kaynagi-p-40405

No, every manufacturers cables may be different and its high risk. Stick to known brand PSU's like Corsair, EVGA, Antec, Coolermaster etc and make sure you get Gold rated or above. thier product pages list all the cables they come with.

The last I got running with 9 GPU's were the Asus Z270f boards, with 2 M.2 to Pcie adapters.

But since then I have found almost no newer board that can run 9 GPUs without splitters, none of them have 7 pcie slots anymore.

So want to know about your experiences - what Regular Gaming boards have you gotten to run with 9+ GPUs?

You would need to use 7 of the pcie ports just on the GPU's, so how are you powering the risers???
Splitters are fine to split ONE pcie port to two for connecting two risers to each, but anything more than that is begging for trouble.

Ideally you need to have enough pcie ports on the psu to power all GPUs and risers. In a pinch you can use molex powered risers, but do not use any molex-pcie adapters that come with risers, those are a fire hazard.
As a general rule of thumb, do not exceed 80% of the rated load on the PSU for long term operation, 75% if you dont have adequate cooling.

Whoops, didnt see the update on the main thread. Updated the link to point to main github.

You should remove your link to Trex and point to the Trex thread.  Better people use ONLY the Trex official thread and only the link provided in 1st post of Trex thread.  If you stick around long enough you will realize why…we have a constant problem of people posting malware links of mining software.

Not saying yours is malware…saying its best not to post the link and remove all doubt.

And yes it is a problem with scammers.

It already links to the official Github ...

I'm surprised this is not posted here but T-Rex unlocked LHR 100% via dual mining

You can mine ETH upto 30% of the cards capacity, and the remaining 70% would have to be something like Ergo

It's currently on their DEV in discord

Your advice is terrible. You gave it for 10 months in a row and it was wrong for 10 months in a row.

The time now is for dca  dollar cost average of gpu purchases.

Funny, you said it was a terrible advice, terrible advice after a coin rose 15 times its price? that is no terrible advice, anyway, in the world of crypto, there is gamble, you take a little, big or no gamble  at all, my advice was "better be safe than sorry", when a coin rises 15 times in few weeks, you sell and be happy about it, being greedy is good, being too greedy is bad, in the end the important thing is do not be a sucker, as long as you are in profit that is what matters.

About gpus, the time to buy gpus while being safe was before january 2021. There was enough stock before january at msrp, that was the right time to gamble on it, my advice after january was not to buy gpus because gpus were 3 x or more than msrp already, my first rule of safe mining to people will always be, do not ever buy overpriced gpus and as long as you dont do then you are doing it right, this case of the op is hey I wanted to be too greedy and "in the name of the bear market is coming" i missed profit, people need to choose what level of gamble they want to be in and do not blame the advice others say, everybody has a different view of things, some gamble 100%, some gamble 0%, some stay in the middle and gamble 50% and so on.

Also, gpus are coming in lhr form and you are competing x asics x non lhr gpus and yet paid 5 x the msrp ehhe and you want to be everything alright in the end and achieve roi hehe, if people are expecting me to say "hey be a sucker and do it", they got it all wrong.

Why dont you quit yapping and put your money where your mouth is. If you're so sure things are gonna tank, please take out a substantial short position on a crypto of chocie, then make a Post about it with screenshots etc so people know you arent just a motormouth.

Hey any update on Lolminer Ergo hash-rate being shown by dashboard? The miner is mining if you look at the console but that miner reported hashrate isnt being captured by any of the dashboard views.

lolminer Autolykos2 hashrates arent captured by smOS so they dont show up against the GPU's in individual rig view, against the Rigs in All Rigs view, or in the total shown at the top of the page. its just 0 in hashrate everywhere.
