I started leasing Russian botnet time and now I use about 32,000 PCs at 25% load.

Still less hashes per second than one 5970.

rig in air-conditioned home means your PUE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_usage_effectiveness) is 2. For comparison recently Facebook boasted that their coolest DC has 1.07 PUE and as another example my DC1 has PUE of 1.03.

PUE of 2 essentially means you pay twice for your rig's electricity. Not much to be proud of, really.

Well, I guess since I don't pay the bill for the house the rig is in I don't really have to worry about the PUE, do I?

The best time to buy is after the price goes up a lot, not down, so I share your doubts.

Buy high, sell low.

I agree that constructive criticism is needed,  but I am sick of seeing 1000 new threads that say:
OMG,  the Bitcoin world is coming to an end!  SELL! SELL! SELL!

I'm not even convinced that they are being posted by real people rather than bots.

Lets get rid of worthless posts that do nothing to contribute.
You should see #bitcoin-otc.

People have questions that deserve their own topics. You are only hurting the community. Topic creation is an inherent tool in the arsenal of the user. Without it, he's no user at all. You are denying complete forum access and the ability to get good support which is one of the main purposes of a forum.

I'd say search is much more valuable than topic creation. Especially as a new user (and I'm a new user quite frequently on forums), you'll usually find most answers to your questions just by doing a search. Sometimes you might need some clarification - fine, post in one of the threads that already deals with the subject you want to know more about. I think that's really the healthy approach. Reading first, posting later is one of the really good things that seemingly got almost completely lost in Netiquette.

I've seen forums degrade into "hey, why didn't you use the search -> list of links with related posts" too many times. It's not really enjoyable.

But new members forum sounds fine to me, too. That way, people will at least new it's just new people posting and it's not necessarily representative of the larger community.
I'd agree with you if forum search functions weren't so poor. The search algorithm is hardly comprehensive.

It isn't the 'algorithm' it is the people that don't know how to use search correctly.

Search for the term FPGA - this has already been discussed at length in there. The FPGA people already have working implementations. The big impediment to ASIC implementation is the cost not the talent on these forums.
Don't you dare say FPGA in front of ArtforZ, he will scold you into oblivion.

You create a New Members board. You only allow them to post on this board for 10 posts or so. Once they have proven to be competent members, they can take advantage of the rest of the community.

You're welcome.

I don't think this will solve the problem. They will just post useless things until they have 10 posts, and then post whatever nonsense they want to post on the other forums. You need to somehow force (not so much force but give the incentive to) people to contribute to the community before they can start new topics.

In order to stave off the inevitable new topic forum spam from new people with 1 or 2 posts, I think there should be a 30-50 post barrier in order to start making new topics. There's too many "BUY BUY BUY BUY" "SELL SELL SELL SELL" topics not to mention questions that could easily be found in the wiki or simply searching the forums. It is beginning to be difficult following topics as there are so many new ones being created now.

edit: Don't get me wrong..I understand we were all "once newbs" before. But, once more and more people start joining the forums it will be a PITA to sift through all the new topics. Also, I know not every new topic is the same and I look forward to all the awesome discussions started on these forums.

Re: TO NEW MINERS: trust your feelings...
by
dingus

I see there has been a huge influx of new miners as of late, and with the recent spike in the exchange rate, it's understandable.

Lately I've been giving this a whole lot of thought, and all my gut instinct tells me that the true price of BTC for a long haul is not the astronomic $100/BTC or higher that the bigbit miners are all hoping for, but about $10/BTC.

I just urge these new guys, specifically the ones that have recently ordered $500-1000+ and ESPECIALLY $1000+ of new equipment with no prior bitcoin experience, to really just take a look at the charts and reflect on everything and trust your feelings.  Listening to the big miner's estimations based on hope is not smart.

Revisit your calculations.  You might be thinking "It's no problem, at the worst, I break even and get the hardware for free within X days."  You need to run your calculations for the next 3 months assuming MINIMUM +90% difficulty per increase, and a $10 BTC price.

Otherwise, you're likely to be in for a rude awakening.

Just look at the charts again.  Natural markets don't behave this way, trust your gut.  Don't get burned.

I cancelled my 4x 6990 rig, cause it would be foolish.  You young guys who are taking risks, please do the same.  My buddy is likely going to lose his girlfriend over BTC mining after blowing their whole savings chasing BTC rainbows...

So.... don't go by what the miners say...but go by your 'gut instinct.' Got it!

800mhash from a 5970 850/300. But it's stable at around 750.

What flags and OS, miner are you using? Thats crazy score for 5870 !! My can get 427 MH/s with 1000/347.
Read again, the card is a 5970.
