This is a very interesting point you make. The concept behind Merit is super-cool, but the practic implementation quite sucks. As a latecomer I'm personally totally stuck as far a "proof of growth" is concerned (for the reasons I've explained in a previous post of mine) - and this applies to every newcomer so in other words the network CANNOT really grow this way. The "proof of growth" should be renamed "proof of whale" since only people with their bags full of Merits will eventually get more. I've also given a try to mine Merits with the wallet but as a result I've ended only in wasting electricity and getting ZERO merits. On top of that the news that coins will be sold by the team to people makes it really look like just another Ponzi. The only realistic way to get the coins is to fucking buy them? WTF? So you guess what? Good project on paper - but in the real world it has probably no future.
I read other posts in topic I missed. First of all, it's not begging when you ask your inviter for more invites. Invites are here and yes it depends on a) mining b) CGS. So I am getting more invites with wallet that invited many people and has some balance and do some mining than for example you. It's hard to tell who should get invites in decentralized way, and this seems to me pretty good solution. And we, people, community, are here to compensate it. There's nothing wrong asking someone higher in your ambassador tree for invites, I did it before too and that's the point of community. Even someone outside your tree will likely send you couple of as KAMO mentioned. I sent you 5 more invites and if wallet invited by you will need invites just let me know and I will send them too. It's not about begging it's just about letting me know, so invites will be spread the best way they can be.

Also there are more ways to get invites but if your inviter has some (in your case me) or someone upper in a tree, there's no reason avoiding to ask. As was mostly mentioned:
1. you can get it from centralized pools, starting with Parachute is great, but you need to wait until end of the month, it's similar, you have to ask for them via form (not begging!)
2. try to get 20 MRT to your wallet and you'll be qualified for Proof of Growth rewards, it's not true only whales get it, you'll get couple rewards in a month even with 20 MRT wallet you have also a chance to get invite from blockchain this way, check your rank here https://merit.disifi.com/wallet/Roberto
3. last but not least, invites are not so expensive nowadays, motivation to create fake wallets disappeared with PoG3 and I guess you would get invites starting at 2 MRT on Discord, it's worth it if you're going to invite some real wallets it will be returned in growth rewards pretty soon

The Merit wallet does not see my GPU, Nvidia 1060 - it tell me "You do not have any GPU device yet" even though of course I have - I don't know why, didn't see any help or tutorial which would help me understand how the wallet should start seeing my GPU. Therefore only CPU mining possible and even though I have a powerful 8-core i7 processor, one day of CPU mining didn't produce a single Merit, but of course it wasted a lot of electricity.
But anyway, what supposedly makes Merit a different coin is its (on paper) brilliant Proof of Growth concept, but if in the real world that does not work at all (for sure it doesn't for me and the few friends which I have involved) than all the special and unique value of this coin is just a delusion.
Have you tried this procedure? https://merit.disifi.com/wiki/unavailable-gpus

1. Update your graphics drivers
2. Save and record your 12 word passphrase somewhere safe
3. Click on "Settings" in the left hand menu of the wallet
4. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE COMPLETED STEP 2. Click on the red button at the bottom to "Clear data and logout".
5. Reload your wallet using your 12 word passphrase
6. Happy mining!

All MRT pools down. Looks like a BC issue, as said on the Discord channel. Any info about that ?
core team is fixing that right now, should be back soon, there seems to be a bug in the getblocktemplate rpc call

Hello,
If the your token is officially registered with the US government, then this is very good news for the whole plan. This is a good sign for the development and attraction of investments. I believe that the token will be very popular and in demand.
Hello Mike, I understand you're just hunting posts, but either way, Merit is not token, it's coin. Also it was without ICO, so no reason to official registration. Have a nice day!

Do I understand right that I need to be minimum a Junior member and then I can join the bounty? Or can I go for airdrops until I've become a junior member? It would be a good way to support the plan also…
There is actually signature campaign you can join if you meet the criteria https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5015102.0

Why haven't I heard of this before? Have you tried bringing it to any media outlets to get more exposure?
There actually were some articles around the web, also Adil had some speaking, check jayk306's post on first page, he summarized some. But as far as I know it wasn't (and still not) pushed very hard, firstly the product should be great to use, then promote it.

No, it's not, all depends on how active user you will be able to invite with that invite

Hello KAMO287!

Just a question.

Why do you sometimes speak using "us" and other times using "them" referring to development?

Could you make it clear if you are part of the team? Or are you just a fan/hodler?

Thank you.
Speaking "us" was quote from FAQ, but, I am also not member of core team and I like to use term "us" as Merit community, whole project is community targeted, so join "us" and feel free to speaking as "us" Wink

I have few question regarding this project:

They have only centrally control wallet and market, how it will add to other exchanger or services?
How it will grow, if other 3rd party services can not use it without invitation?
How exactly invitation created?

Small addition to awesome KAMO response about centralized wallets - actually there is also full node wallet, not only centralized. You can run full node for yourself. https://www.merit.me/technology/#get-core-client

Is the plan for this project to be invite-only forever?  Or just for a limited period of time?

I think we are all familiar with famous growth stories based on an invite-only model.  (Facebook, GMail, Pinterest, Spotify)

But, I think in all of the above cases, the product eventually CAME OUT of this invite-only stage and became publicly available.

I'm not saying this is needed for Merit to be successful, but I'd like to understand if there is some plan for this.
No, it's not in plan. Here invites are not to restrict access to project, exactly the opposite, it's supposed to make it grow. Algorithm for generating invites are dynamic so there won't be out of stock - if more invites are used, more invites will be distributed.

The scam exchange that posted on here earlier made me wonder -- will MRT ever be listed on a real exchange?

How can an invite-only crypto become listed on an exchange like Binance or BitMex, where the wallet itself is hosted?  Will the user need 1 invite-token to have a regular wallet and then another invite-token to trade on an exchange?

It definitely will, from FAQ:

We have not talked to any third-party exchanges yet, but we plan to reach out to them soon.  We followed this strategy for many reasons.

The short version is that Merit has been successful so far in onboarding many new users who have never used crypto before.  We are extraordinarily proud of this.
And most exchanges are "Expert Mode" with 100s of currency pairs and very complex "daytrader" interfaces.

We wanted to be sure that we provided a remarkably simple and easy way for new users to Merit (and crypto in general) to get their hands on Merit.

Additionally, because Merit is invite only, exchanges will have to do a little extra work in order to list MRT.  We have several ways to facilitate this process, but in the short term we will continue to support the Market.

Oops -- my mistake.  You are right.  I didn't realize there was a dashboard that lets you visualize the network.  Is this an official Merit project?  I didn't see it in the ANN.
Yes, https://dashboard.merit.me/ and everything on it (including the star chart) is part of the official Merit project. It's inspired by the block stats explorer project developed my disifi (https://merit.disifi.com/).
Then this should totally be in the ANN -- it looks really good, and helps make the project feel more legitimate.
Well that dashboard was not supposed to be publicly announced yet, there are some things to be done and dev team wants to make things to some proper state before publishing (as you can see with announcing whole project). But too late I think Cheesy

Quite interesting -- is there some simple explanation for how the community growth score (CGS) is calculated?  If not, can someone point me to the section in the BluePaper about it?
It's on page 10, part 4.5, really complex thing.

In short, it's as I posted earlier:
- get as much Merits as possible and hold (it matures, 50% after 7 days, fully after 30 days)
- invite as much people as you can with as much Merits as possible
- teach them to do those two things above, so your network will be growing

Is there an easy explanation for how the "Growth Lottery" happens?  Is it based on global activity?  Or just what a user does in the last block?  (Which would only be in the last minute??)  Or something else?
Lottery is based on two types of "community growth scores" equally CGS and subCGS (5 MRT and 5 MRT each block). It's combination of your balance with your activity in inviting new people, growing your network. To make your scores bigger, easiest explanation would be:
- get as much Merits as possible
- invite as much people as you can with as much Merits as possible
- teach them to do those two things above, so your network will be growing

Thank you!

This is a very thorough answer to my question, and was what I was looking for.  This is actually a lot more interesting than I thought.  It seems like the invitation distribution has some intelligence to it.  And, if I understand it correctly, this is actually built into Merit Core?  In other words, this is actually part of the consensus mechanism.

Quite interesting.

How does the system prevent people with the highest CGS from effectively getting all the invite tokens?
Yes it's built into blockchain, part of consensus.

People with higher CGS usually use most of the invite tokens, so it's fair to distribute it to them based on that key. Anyway, algorithm for generating invites are dynamic so there won't be situation when no invites will be left, if more invites are spent, more are distributed. It can be hard in short-time when many invites are used, but next days also many invites will be airdropped.

Interesting concept.  I have a LOT of questions.  I am going to start with the most pressing ones.

Where do the invite tokens actually come from? It seems like I need an invite token to actually activate my wallet.  Though it seems like the key generation was actually done before receiving the token -- at least I got my seed already.  Are these tokens coming from the Merit foundation?  If so, isn't that a tad centralized?

How long has this project been in development? The roadmap says that the first release was December 2017, but I see 30k commits on Github.  When did you actually BEGIN development?

To clarify responses of others. Invite distribution is decentralized and how algorithm decides who will get one is lottery. Invites are distributed:

- 1 of 10 blocks for PoG miners
- from the rest:
      - 50% awarded based on your CGS (community growth score).
      - 40% awarded to new addresses (Max 1 per address).
      - 10% awarded to random addresses.
- Minimum of 144 invites airdropped per day. Grows as needed.
- Number Airdropped based on overall growth, more growth means more invites generated.

About a development, as someone mentioned it's from fall of 2017 as far as I know, those 30k commits are not all from dev team, there's accounted also commits from project it was based on. They are super fast but not as much Smiley I guess it's around 2k commits since then.

Forgive me if I'm missing something, but how could you list an invite-only cryptocurrency just minutes after it was announced?

Something seems weird about this.

Can you explain a little bit more about how a user would buy MRT from your exchange, in DETAIL?

May be you do not see there Blockchain source code https://github.com/meritlabs/merit
They have option of invite-only/escrow/cancel only on web wallet but not in main blockchian, its basically not invite-only/escrow cryptocurrency, this feature only on there webwallet not in main blockchain.

It's in main blockchain, wallet needs to be beaconed before use, otherwise it's not possible to transfer Merits there.
