somewhat lower luck and btc price dynamics this month brought me into the minus territory.
what's the kano miners overall situation, if i may ask?

Same here, although only slightly negative. As I mentioned before on here I'm treating this as an investment so I'm not too terribly concerned about it as long as it doesn't go too negative.

However, there is anothing thing with the big network difficulty increase and the dropping BTC price on the exchanges to consider. it is at the point where I would get the same amount of BTC if I shut down my miners and spent the money I would have spent on electricity to just buy BTC on an exchange. My electricity costs are on the high end of what is practical so others probably have more room still. For now, I'm still mining and counting on the BTC price to start rising again soon.

Hi all,

Today i finished most of the work on my new mini-farm.
I thought i'd share it here, in order to bring other people on good ideas.
I just took the effort to transfer th pictures to my email, put in a folder, upload, adjust size, and upload to forum. Its quite a task, and now the pics are turned 90 degree, so please rotate your head or monitor please  Grin Grin

Very nice work. I'm working on something similar, but I never thought about using an old fridge. What size is the air inlet and outlet for your box? I think that's what I'm struggling the most with right now. I can't get more than 3 841's and 1 741 running in mine without things overheating.

about 2000 cnd on the positive side.

5 months, huge electrical bill, and only 1.138 bitcoin.  This value at 11000 cnd (for the BTC) is included with the profit of 2000 cnd after if I sell it.
for most of the miners I paid the Pre Dec 19 price of 1530 USD plus PSU and shipping.  So when all i said and done, my 2 to 2.5 month break even point was long lost since I am over 5 months now.

...

So I know I will get flak about this post, and thats ok, I know people will say that its a long term investment for mining.  I agree, but it is too long, at least for me.  What do you think is a reasonable amount of time?

We all have to make the decisions that we think is best for our particular situation. Not everyone got into mining to build a business around it. There are plenty of people who have been happy just being a small home miner or hobby miner. Up until the last year or so that was still feasible. With the rapid increase in the network difficulty over the last year it doesn't make sense now for most people and it's going to make less and less sense as the difficulty continues it's upward climb.

I faced this same decision myself early this year. Been mining here since I started in Feb 2017 with 3 Bitmain R4's. As the price of BTC dropped and the network difficulty rose these things are less and less profitable. I was looking at probably going negative returns by summer on them. I decided that I enjoy doing this and being a small part of the mining community, so I'm staying. I bought 3 841's in April which I absolutely love. The quality of these things compared to the Bitmain machines is huge. I don't understand why they aren't more popular. I just sold my 3 R4's on eBay for about $1,000 each and used the proceeds of that to buy 3 more 841's which will be here on Monday.  That at least should keep me above water for a good while.  I'm a bit shocked that I could sell those R4's for as much as someone can buy 3 841's.

For me, I treat mining as an investment that also gives me enjoyment and satisfaction and expect a payoff in the future. But it is a very risky investment for sure so it isn't going to fit into everyone's portfolio.

Guys I'm looking at the pools stats and this is crazy. We have 40% more hashing power than 6-7 months ago, and yet we are expected to only find 1/2 as many blocks. That's crazy!
Coz diff increased.

First block 1-May-2017 464270 Diff = 521,974,519,553
Current blocks Diff = 4,022,059,196,165

So Diff increased ... 7.7 times since then.

So you'd expect to find, with the same hash rate, only 1/7.7 as many blocks per day compared to a year ago.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't this also mean that each one of our miners is expected to generate only 1/7.7 = 12% the amount of BTC it was expected to generate a year ago? With the diff increasing this fast it can't be much longer before the current generation of miners are no longer profitable without a serious jump in BTC value.

I've been mining on here since Feb 2017 (a little over a year) with 3 R4's that I bought off of ebay. I have been very happy here between the mostly friendly community and Kano's openness and willingness to so patiently answer the same questions over and over again. I can't imagine mining anywhere else.

I finally bit the bullet and decided to expand my little mine. I added 2 Avalon 741's about a week and a half ago and just got in 3 brand new Avalon 841's from Blockforge today and got those up and running and pointed here. After seeing my hash rate around 25TH for the last year it is really exciting to see about 80TH on the front page. Still one of the little guys but enjoying every minute of it. Let's get some blocks!!

As a miner in a pool that shares transaction fees, is anyone else missing the days (not that long ago) of the 14+ BTC block rewards? Although as a user of BTC the low fees are great and probably better for the currency in the long run.

What do you guys think of the antminer r4? Thinking about buying two from usa (im uk) and running them on kano pool

Is it worth the investment?
I know s9 will have a better watt/th ratio but these will be run at home were i have to pay electric
My other miners i run at work were i dont pay
Also do u guys know any reputable company's that stock the r4 and ship uk?
My biggest problem is the import tax Sad
I would stay away from the R4. I have two of them and both lost 1 board. One after a few hours and one after 6 months. If you read the R4 thread, https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1597639.0 its full of similar stories.

Unless you just want a space heater, or they are super cheap, I would buy something else.

I can only speak from my experience, but I've had 3 R4's running here in the basement for about a year with no problems. I chose them for my situation because they are not too noisy. Been mining here on kano with them the whole time and have about 2.5BTC to show for it. Not a huge sum, but I think at least as much as one would expect from 25TH. I have been quite happy with them.

It was directed to rifleman who seems adamant that this isn’t the right pool for me and I should mine elsewhere...that tone towards potential miners is certainly detrimental to the growth of this pool.

Learn from my mistake and just do what I did not long ago. Just click on the "ignore" under his name and this will become a much nicer place for you. There are some people on every forum you just have to ignore.

Time? Nope - the first block ever found on the pool was pretty slow coz the pool was tiny.
It was also lucky (less than 100%)

However, Diff% is what matters for rewards, and this one is 542% at the moment.

The 2 largest are there on the Web site Blocks page at the end of October - the largest being 928.788%

Now for that CDF related number Smiley
0.99557285335217  542.000%  1 in 225.9
i.e. we expect to average, over time, 1 in 225.9 blocks to be over 542%

Out of curiosity what is the actual number of blocks over 542% since the beginning of the pool? Including the block we're on now we have 4 out of the last 88 listed on the blocks page (or 1 in 22).
I only have the stats from when I first joined. But since block 141, we have had 10 blocks 500% or greater. That number doesn't include orphan blocks.

Thanks. That's pretty incredible. That's 10 out of about 2063 or 1 in 206.3. According to the tables Kano has posted before the CDF tells us that we should expect 1 in 148 over 500%. So at least going back to the pool's 141st block we are quite a bit better than that.

subtract the last block we found from the last block found on the website.   Pretty easy to do.

2834 blocks as of right now.

I think the days of home mining and small mining pools are coming to an end. If you cannot add hashing power to match difficulty you are just spinning your wheels. The mining manufacturers need to produce a 20THs miner at 1500w that is affordable for us to buy. This latest round from Ant and Canaan is just a money grab taking advantage of people looking for an answer. If things keep going at the rate they are now my 55THs operation will not be profitable after June 2018. If BTC goes back to $20K it will give me a few more months. If China bans mining the overpriced S9 will be worthless on the resale market. We went from 72 blocks in June to 8 in January you do the math.

Everyone with free electricity mine on! I am searching for answers if anyone has a plan.

I have been thinking about this same thing for the last couple of months as well. I'm in an even worse place that you with my 27TH hashpower and really not able to add more without a decent investment. With the difficulty increasing as fast as it is and the BTC value leveling off a bit I'll be done mining in the next few months. The question I'm wrestling with now is whether to stop now and sell my miners at a good price on eBay or wait until later this spring to do it and take a chance that I can't get as much for the miners. Either way, I'm a bit sad about it since I've only been mining for about a year and have enjoyed it a lot. I just don't see this being profitable for a small time miner for much longer. I'm wonder what others in our situation are thinking.

Look at the ebay prices. Brand new ones are now selling under 3k. If you have been mining for a year with yours I am not sure how much you think you will make but I doubt it will be a "good price" as you say. Prices are dropping fast from the 6k price point.

well, since I paid <$1500 each for them a good price in my eyes would simply at least recoup that cost. For the time being the 3 of them are netting me >$1,000 per month, so I'm just keeping a close eye on things. I'm not looking for a $3k price point. I was merely responding to the original poster and agreeing that the days of the home miner are numbered and probably coming to an end in 2018.

Yes.. it doesnt appear to be a responsive table, the date is never displayed regardless of browser width afaik. Ive been fighting the same issue. The i18n regionality of the timestamp format is not the issue being raised, its that the year is missing, so the year must be assumed in any application consuming this data. In excel using INT() operations against this column, it will assume the current year, which is why folks are hitting this issue now given the new year.

It doesn't matter to me what i18n format you put the timestamp in, but please add the year so this data is precise enough to be consumed in outside applications.

Thanks!

Yes, thank you for saying it better than I was. Adding the year will fix the issue.

Quick question for you Kano. On the rewards page the date format is strange (e.g. 31/Dec 04:29). It didn't used to be like that. The last time I copy and pasted, back in August I think, it was like 8/25/2017 8:22:00. The new format is difficult to get into a spreadsheet. Is it something on my end doing that or was it changed in the last few months in one of your updates? Would it be possible to go back to a more standard format?

Also, is the rewards data available through the API?
The web site never used the messed up american date format in any of the tables Smiley

The display format is based on space available, so often year isn't included.

There's no API for rewards (yet)

The biggest problem is the lack of a year. I stretch my browser out to full screen width and still no year. It's a minor thing and your time is better spent on more important things. I'll figure out how to work around it.

Block? CKPool app just said we found block 500096 was found by koelby.s93. Normally someone posts here quick but it has been a few minutes with no post about finding the block. Is the app right? Did we find a block?

We found that block 59 hours ago. CKPool app is always way behind and reporting blocks found days after they were found. I stopped using it for that reason.

I have about 25th here now.

Hey Phil, with 25T what is your avg payout per block?

really low

and I am not at 5n.  but I guess 0.004 a block

I've been mining here since February with about 25TH. Per block payout right now is ranging from about 0.0045 to 0.0055 depending on the size of the block. It's not a ton but a nice little supplement that doesn't really require any work.

Sorry if this is explained somewhere else, but I saw the latest block was only like 90kb while most others hover around 990kb (and have ~1.5 btc more in transaction fees).

Why are some blocks like this?
Because when Kano takes his 0.9% (making for 1 transaction), it's not an empty block.  Tongue

Sorry, but I don't understand what you said. I had the same question when I saw the "Block Reward" for the latest block was 12.6 something. Since finding a block  is 12.5 BTC right now (I think) does it mean that there were no transaction fees in this block? Sorry if this is obvious to others, but I'm only a month into being a miner. Still trying to figure out how it all works.
Our block came only 6 seconds after the previous block. There likely weren't very many transactions out there to put into our block.

Aha! Thank you. I missed that detail. That makes perfect sense then.
