Why not start off mining some alt coins? The barrier to entry is much, much lower. You could probably get a few people to donate some old cards or even 1 BTC would be enough for an ultra budget mining rig (maybe a couple of 7850s plus mobo/CPU/RAM/PSU). In the mean time, you could get some donations for using BTC or whatever alt coin in your community.

New 11/14/2013 - Conference call with devs of curecoin and Stanford university on Tues 19th of Nov

Good job, I hope this goes well!
If you can get them to handle the folder rewards, it will make the project that much more robust by removing one potential point of failure. Couldn't be much better, since the folding has to be centralized anyway.
Do not surrender the ability to add other projects into Curecoin though, as this is where decentralization will come from Smiley Btw I would suggest World Community Grid as another set of projects. They cover diseases (cancer, AIDS...) and environmental issues (energy, water...). You can pick which projects to support.
Current projects:
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/research/viewAllProjects.do
Past projects:
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/research/viewAllProjects.do?proj=comp

Have a look at gridcoin. You can mine gridcoin right now while having your CPU do work for world community grid or any other BOINC projects such as rosetta, SETI, etc.

Don't do it, investing in any cryptocurrency right now with borrowed money is just asking for trouble.

I'd say it would be better to invest in a cheap 1 or 2 gpu mining rig (single R9 280x or dual 7950 if you can find them) and mine the currency of your choice. Even if BTC goes to 0, you could still part it out or use it as a gaming machine  Smiley

Re: Is Mining Viable Anymore?

If you want into bitcoin, just buy the damn things. You just missed a solid opportunity, though.  Grin

If you want to mine, like really mine, go with altcoins. Many are profitable right now, so much so that you can't buy a 280x or higher GPU for $200+ over launch price. It's always possible to trade and add to the BTC stash with altcoins, a lot easier than buying with fiat.

And the hardware you buy will depreciate at a much much slower rate, especially if alts keep climbing relative to BTC. The supply chain has been hit hard lately, if these trends continue and the hardware supply stays the same scrypt difficulty can't possibly grow as fast as BTC. You'd be doing good to have GPU hardware around in that case.
