I think this is very sensible. Does anyone care to defend the current situation ?

Sure I'll try.  All players know about the "abrupt" changes in reward.  Therefore there should not be a large unpredicted response from the market during this change.  The existence of the change is already factored into the price so theoretically the market is just as likely to jump significantly on any other day.  It is the unexpected that really freaks out the market.    Further, more frequent changes are more difficult to manage.

Well Established Bookstore - Now accepting bitcoins!
by

on 16/06/2011, 15:11:11 UTC

Greetings -

I have put online the first implementation of accepting bitcoins for oan inventory of thousands of used and out of print books.
We are using mybitcoin for now to accept payments for books:

www.pleasantstbooks.com

If anybody is interested, please take a look let me know if this is a reasonable way to do business, or if this is too basic an implementation for anyone to use.  Or, pick up some books from your mining profits.  The books are also listed on the American Book Exchange, and through there on Amazon.

Cheers and happy bitcoining -

You can look at the market depth data from mt gox e.g. at bitcoincharts.  Informative, but they also have dark pools so you won't know the whole story.

Re: Do Bitcoins have Serial Numbers (effectively)
by

Caveat: I'm not an expert.

Yes you're right, each fraction of coin can be traced back to where it came from: a block with generated BTCs at some point in the past.

Not true for dollars, the serial number only tells you where that particular piece of paper was minted - nothing about where the value really came from before it was spit out of your ATM.

I've seen tons of blatantly false information in the media about this.. claiming that bitcoins are "less traceable than dollars".  As I understand it, they truth is that they are more traceable than dollars.

The techno-crypto stuff, how miners work, etc, is definitely not something I would discuss with the masses.  But what makes it hard to "make a sale" of the whole bitcoin system, is the technical knowledge required to do even the simplest transaction.

Lets say that I want to open up a bank account and deposit 100$ in it.  I go to the bank, they make me sign a few papers, I hand over the 100$, they give me an ATM card, and I'm all set to do transactions.

I assume you mean debit card because the ATM is only going to be able to give you your $100 back (in the best case).  You also will need to present various papers when you go to the bank.

With Bitcoins, I have to install the bitcoin wallet myself, then transfer some money using obscure methods to MtGox or some other exchange, then buy BTC using an interface similar to buying stocks, then wait a bit for the BTC to show up on my wallet, then finally I am ready to do a transaction.  Currently most stores don't accept it, so if I want to use my BTC in the real-world, I have to jump through the same hoops.  And while BTC transactions themselves don't have, a lot of the ways to cash out do have fees, whereas many of those that don't have "real" fees will not give you fair rates for your BTC.

So for the typical user who doesn't buy online normally, it's not a very convenient currency yet.

True, not so convenient yet especially for the places that don't accept it.  Smiley  But suppose you want to send money overseas to your friends or accept money online as a business?  There are still hoops to jump through but it shows the promise of being more convenient than anything else out there.

Greetings-
I am mostly a lurker here for the last few months.
Been trading a small amount of BTCs.
I recently set up an antiquarian bookstore to use bitcoins and I was going to post a link here.
So, if you can whitelist me it would be much appreciated.
 Best Regards -

why would the managers of a currency design it to fail?  if it were me i'd rather keep it going and rake in a bit of profit on it in the meantime.

I hear a lot of talk about this but I'm not sure I get it.

Aren't USD used to do everything illicit and illegal under the sun including pay for assassinations, war, and environmental destruction?
Aren't USD just as easy or easier to hide from the tax man's thugs than bitcoins?  The IRS has no hidden camera in my mattress.
Don't most  "C&TO"  use USD to do business?
