Thought Experiment: Deeper dive on a gov dedicated to shutting down Bitcoin

What if there were a terror attack like 9/11 financed with cryptocurrency or the US government decided that the risks to financial surveillance and tax collection posed by cryptocurrency was so high that it decided to launch a war against cryptocurrency like its war against drugs or radical Islam and was willing to spend upwards of a trillion dollars over the next several years to combat it? Couldn’t they just mount 51% attacks on every current and future cryptocurrency and freeze all transactions?

For example, ballpark figures to duplicate current Bitcoin network hashrate would be $600 million equipment cost and $5 million per day electricity cost.

Might a response be to create niche, private, “underground” non open source, restricted access cryptocurrencies? Could these gather enough network effect to have any utility without being vulnerable to attack?

Bitfinex should negotiate with hacker. Offer $10 million to return the stolen bitcoins and drop investigation.

Yeah, this could be done. However I think hackers will not accept the offer, because they prefer to earn much money instead of having to return all funds they have get and given only a small portion of the money to them. But it also depends on how bitfinex the hacker in the negotiation to seduce, hopefully this issue was quickly completed and running as before

Reasons hacker might agree to negotiate:

1) The advantage of not being investigated might outweigh the difference in lifestyle between having $10 million and $60 million.

2) If he keeps a portion of his settlement in BTC, the price will rise after she agrees to settle.

3) If he takes a long position in bitcoin before agreeing to settle, he will profit.

4) He will be seen as a hero by many instead of a theif and will be sought after for security advice.

5) He will be able to convert his BTC to USD easily.

Update - As it stands, we are continuing to investigate the hack and cooperating with authorities and the top blockchain analytic companies in the space to track the stolen bitcoins. In the meantime, we have been working on getting the platform up and running on a secure instance so that users can log in and see if their accounts have been affected as well as the state of their positions and orders. We hope to have an update with more substance later today UTC time.

Guys I've found some slack group they are preparing some kind of petition, you can find them here - bitpetition.herokuapp.com

Quote
We, the undersigned customers as the main creditors of the cryptocurrency trading platform bitfinex.com, demand to immediately provide all the information about the state of affairs on the exchange.
Also, we strongly expect bitfinex.com to present the confirmation of the damage, and the conditions and timetable for the return of customer funds. We require that this process and all the actions of the platform were open and transparent.
We are willing to contribute in any possible way to recover the funds and hope for the best resolution for all parties. However, in case of failure to meet these demands, we will file a class action lawsuit against bitfinex.com.

Sounds reasonable to me
that's your right to get your money back so this action definitely needed

Sounds like denial, anger and bargaining all rolled into one.

You can file lawsuits but once a company enters bankruptcy lawsuits are usually discharged and everybody gets in line together. That's the whole purpose of bankruptcy protection.

Ps- It is often the threat of lawsuits that forces a company into bankruptcy.

Regarding #2, whitepaper compares rationality of miners in Bitcoin to rationality of gold custodians. That rationality is not analogous.  If the gold custodians steal all the gold the market price of gold does not go to zero.

This is more like an audited version of Mt. Gox. If the custodians hold the gold, it's their gold just like an exchange that holds your keys.

Read whitepaper but still do not understand.

1) Why can't this be shut down just like E-Gold was?
2) Once the Proof of asset and proof of audit takes place why can't the gold bars be suddenly removed or stolen?

Censorship is enabled by technical factors but motivated by political sentiment.
All other things being equal, increased user adoption decreases technical vulnerability (more users means more nodes and a higher bitcoin price which means more miners) and improves political standing.

Decentralization is not an important goal in and of itself.  The end goal is censorship resistance.
User adoption contributes to censorship resistance. Therefore to the extent a block size limit restricts user adoption, it also diminishes censorship resistance.
