I have an old Hive wallet on a MacBook and when I try open it using my password the application just shuts down.  I was able to access it 2 weeks ago.
I have the bitcoinkit.wallet file and the password

Nearly 120,000 bitcoins stolen. Stuff like this happening does not instill confidence in bitcoin. I worry about the future of bitcoin. Seriously thinking of selling mine.

99.21875% will be mined in 20 years time. If electricity isn't very cheap by then and/or if bitcoin isn't worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, it's hard to imagine anybody wanting to mine then. How will transactions then be verified?

I'm never selling my bitcoins.  I will start spending them in 5 years though when I retire aged 48 in my Tuscan bolthole with my lover.

Not entirely parsimonious. I did sell 300 bitcoins back in September 2013 to help buy my house. If I had waited  another couple of months I would have been able to buy a few houses outright. So, that is why I'm exercising some patience now.

You shouldn't be comparing it to USD but to CNY.  The real psychological barrier is 2000 CNY as most of the bitcoin action is now in China.  Beginning of the end of the US empire perhaps.
