What type of wallet are you using? mostly and almost all use wallet that is ERC-20 format where as most of the coins produced are in the said format. It is true that keeping your coin in an exchange site risks it and you should transfer it fast. For safe keeping, use wallets which are popular like MyEtherWallet. As of my experience, even the new coins this year is in the same format which MEW can access.

If you want to hold on for a long time, then I suggest you invest in several ICO projects, so long-term holding could have a surprising return. I recommend you to join these ICO.

My country took a wait-and-see attitude. In principle, nothing is prohibited, but there is no permissive base. Our politicians try to structure and legalize mining and trade, introduce taxes for local exchanges. However, draft laws are only being developed.

it depends on what you have in mind when you say "need"!

altcoins are supposed to be alternative projects to bitcoin that try and do things that bitcoin can not do. for example bitcoins algorithm is Poof of Work. you can't just change that, so you create a new project and start developing different technologies. PoS comes in. then Proof of Space, and a couple of the Poof of ... that i do not recall right now. then you get technologies that are different, sometimes better, sometimes worse.

so do we need them? yes we need them to create new things. possibly even something better than bitcoin someday. hopefully.

but if we consider the current state of altcoins, the answer is no. we do not need 90% of them. because they just copy paste each other without any improvement or anything.

as a trader's perspective, yeah we need them. the more the merrier. we get more pump and dumps and lots more profit.

If you want to start trading, there are some basic things you need to know and consider before you venture into it. This is necessary so as not to end up loosing your investments. Telling you the processes one after the other here might not be that feasible. You can browse it out or check some threads that have addressed such issue or you can start by investing in a very little way in order to learn and so as not to loose all that you have.
The sane thing is applicable to investing into ICO.

ETH first, then Ripple, and then Dash.  Eth just has so much going for it in the sense of practical business value.  Just look at all of the ICOs that run on ETH and you can see the unique ecosystem that makes ETH so durable going forward.  I don't know why ETH values still fluctuate so much in tandem with bitcoin but my opinion is that this is simply a maturity and psychological reflection.  Eventually, this will stop and ETH will be recognized as independent and wholly separate from bitcoin. 

Dash just has too much pressure from other masternode coins.  Dash is still the lord of the flies in masternode land but there are many other contenders that are gaining market share.

Ripple... well, it's just printed but it's printed with a purpose and the threat of mass adoption in the banking industry puts this just ahead of Dash but clearly behind ETH, bitcoin... and probably many others.

I bet most of the people actually don't the whitepaper, sometimes I don't too. They might just put "best ICO to invest in 2018"  keyword on google and invest on it.
But I agree with @whirlcoin, if you really want your investment to be worth it then read the whitepaper, it doesn't guarantee the project would be successful if you read it though. But at least you'll be at ease because you put your hard-earned money in a project you learned already. But I believe 'luck' play a part too in here.

Even there are rumors of facebook acquiring coinbase. There seems to be real talks and they might be just waiting for proper regulations to jump into the technology of future.
Facebook is competing with tech conglomerates of google and amazon and being the first to get involved directly in crypto would be profitable.

t is risky to invest existing coin which is not in the top 100 because you cant be sure whether they can still increase in price, however if you want to risk then invest to and ICO and buy during pre-sale so that you'll get a lot of bonus, but beware of ICO there are  alot of scams ICO out there.
