OK, so what happened in June 2011?
mtGox was hacked and some 500k BTC stolen.
don't think it will ever happen again, & if it does i doubt the price will drop like that again coz everyone will buy like mad, keeping price up

ATM current production from coinbase is about 7200 BTC so that is 6*7200 USD that needs to be pumped in daily to keep the price at current levels.

That is, we assume that all the mined coins are sold off on the exchanges etc. and not hoarded.

FPGAs are not good for people like me with low electricity.

They are best for people paying like 0.3 USD / kilowatt hour etc.

ATM, I think I will stick to Radeons, thank you very much !

If BTC dies then who will be buying your useless PCBs ?

The important thing is to use FPGA, all electricity prices will go up since it's a free market. So it doesn't matter if you live in a country with lots of hydro like me (Sweden has 50% hydro) our corporations will just sell to Germans for a lot of money when peak oil hits.

Well, rest assured we are fine till "peak oil hits" !

FPGA is a long way off being as good in terms of $/mhash compared to GPUs.

This just shows that we need to make a thin BTC client or at least make the whole thing more scalable :

-too big to download 1.2 GB over internet for some
-too big to store 1.2 GB and growing on HDD

There is a thin bitcoin client that doesn't download the blockchain. https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Electrum

Also StrongCoin httpa://www.strongcoin.com (I'm the founder) is a javascript based client which also doesn't require you to download the blockchain.

How are the private keys stored ?
