EDIT2: Yes, if you've transferred funds to the wallet then you have to wait for it to finish syncing. If there's no funds in it then I'd suggest switching to a lightweight client instead, you can always run a full node later if you want to help network security.

Yeah I transferred about 5 bitcoins to this wallet so I guess I have to wait for it to sync Sad

If you really want to use those coins, you may upload your wallet to some online service, pay using those bitcoins, wait for your local copy of the blockchain to complete, regenerate a new wallet and send those coins back to your local wallet.

You can't get your coins back if they were sent to an address, it's decentralised currency, there's no authority to control transactions or refund those coins. If they were sent to an exchange, you can contact them in order to get some information about the account that was used in the deposit.

Yeah, mind you, Linux is open source so maybe I should take a proper look at it, it doesn't seem to be used for gaming very much though, unless there's a whole ton of Linux based games I don't know about of course.

I think you'll be surprised of how many games are currently being developed for Linux too, Steam has some pretty cool Linux games.

I use Mac OS X for my laptop. Ubuntu on VPS servers I currently deploy, and Gentoo on older servers.

I'm pretty sure even if your scenario happens, there will always be talented people wishing to change things, or at least hack them.

Re: Do we want to work with money regulators, or keep Bitcoin unregulated?
by

Regulation of bitcoin in some sense is inevitable and probably desirable, but it's important to recognize that the only sense in which bitcoin can be realistically regulated has to do with the ways that bitcoin interfaces with the traditional financial system.  So, exchanges, like MtGox, can be compelled to behave in certain ways by the financial regulations of their jurisdictions.  They can be held to standards of accounting and reporting, say, and face fines or interference for not complying.

A unique aspect of bitcoin is that transacting only in the bitcoin ecosystem, away from points of contact with the traditional financial system, is to transact in a system that is pretty strongly resistant to typical top-down regulation from entities like states.  Users can more easily choose whether they operate in the regulated space or the unregulated space.

In a discussion on regulation, I think it's important to make this distinction.  If somebody, like some members of the Foundation, are pro-regulation, it doesn't necessarily mean they believe that bitcoin itself should or will be regulated - it probably just can't be regulated in a practical way.  What they are likely talking about are regulations to do with certain ways that bitcoin comes in contact with traditional financial systems where states already enforce regulations.
Nope nope nope.

Re: With Gold & Silver tumbling, will investors seek out Bitcoin as a hedge?
by

It would be fucked up to seriously invest in bitcoins

why? sure it has no guarantee and many obstacles to overcome if it wants longevity and adoption by more users (and governments) but nothing has a guarantee, as gold/silver is proving right now. I bought silver at $40/ounce three years ago when it was "the sure bet" and now I have less than half of my wealth. And I did that as a way to find a safe haven for a 12k investment that was salvaged from a failing IRA that had an original investment of 14k...

The majority of BTC investors bought BTC below its current price, and of all the options on the table, its appreciation since its inception and or any time prior to 6 months ago has outpaced all other options...

Well if gold and silver investment can fail despite all predictions, imagine what can happen to Bitcoin...

Gold and Silver are being suppressed artificially, by the bankers. Rothschilds set the rate daily, in London.
Bitcoins are not manipulated like this.

Neither would be the safest investment. But both are worthy investment gambles as anything else.

What is the reason for the bankers to suppress gold and silver?

Re: Found BTCs?

So I just got into NameCoins b/c my mining pool is now also issuing those.  I went to register at a namecoin exchange and got an error that my email was already in use.  Weird, i thought, but I guess I could have set up an account without remembering it.  I went to retrieve my password and logged into the account without problem (it was a password reset so I have no idea if it's one of my typical passwords or not).  Funny thing is that once I logged in, there were BTC there and NMC and all sorts of other currency there that I have no recollection of putting there.  We're talking a pretty big amount, even if it was from a decade ago when I dabbled in BTC and then forgot about it, there is no way I had that many.  We're off by a few orders of magnitude.

I figured that they were accidentally transmitted to a wrong address or something, but since BTC is untraceable, how do I return this money?

There is one more possibility, which is someone used my email address to signup for an account.  The email I use for this account is something very generic, like bob@yahoo.com (not actually it, but as an example).  Could this actually be an active account that someone is using with a fake email address?

What do I do here?

1. BTC isn't untraceable, you can ask the exchange for the TXIDs that were generated when the specified address got the deposits ( most exchanges if not all, generate custom addresses for each user ). You can also check your deposit address on the blockchain to see from where the inputs came.

2. The idea that somebody actually sent BTC to a wrong address is almost as plausible as choosing a random number out of a pool of billions of different numbers and guess it.

3. Everything about this post sounds fishy.

But in the blockchain, there are hidden secret messages

From the illuminati, isn't it?

its the secret illuminati communication network

And the hashing power is used to power the alien brainwashing machines.
