Re: Legit owners here can not re-claim his own account!!

I think I may have provided too much info in the account balance input. The balance I provided was within 1btc. The instructions about using the same email address again are not clear. Does it mean if I re open my claim, will it be automaticly rejected? There is a hint about providing more detail in the last balance input, but this can not be redone once previously submitted. I understand not letting anyone see submitted info, but they could at least allow you to delete and redo.

Re: Bitcoin might be getting some profile by The Economist

I just read an abridged version of the 'Bits and bob' article in the digital version (on iPad) of June 18th-24th 2001 edition of The Economist. This represents what is in the print edition. It is much shorter than online version http://www.economist.com/blogs/babbage/2011/06/virtual-currency, cutting out all the technical details. It tells the reader to learn more about how Bitcoin works, visit www.economist.com/blogs/babbage.
So, while not front page, it is under the 'Finance and economics' section and not the 'Science and technology' section.
They end the print version of the article with: "Bitcoin is technically sophisticated. As a monetary system, it looks primitive."

I setup @BitList https://bit-list.appspot.com with this in mind.

The login uses your twitter account, so that can be an anon as you want it, in addition you disguise your twitter account with a nickname of your choosing.

It lets you create Message Drops on the map. The idea is you enter some hashtags in the description, such as #bitcoin, #bitcoin-trader, #bitcoin-seller or #bitcoin-buyer.

people can find message drops around them, filtering by any tag. so someone would Search for 'bitcoin' and only message drops with #bitcoin in the description would show on the map. With the messages, you can work out an inperson exchange.

Opening a Drop anyone can add a public message to it as well as a private message to it's owner. I need some way to add more virality to it, but it is a little difficult with it's focus on anonymity.

There is also the ubitex.org project.

I believe the enforced fee for lower amounts is to prevent spamming the system with large amounts of tiny transactions. The next version of the client will allow the minimum fee to be 0.0005.

I like this:

The Constitution of the Universe
Preamble
The purpose of human life is to live happily.

The function of government is to guarantee those conditions that allow individuals to fulfill their purpose. Those conditions can be guaranteed through a constitution that forbids the use of initiatory force, fraud, or coercion by any person or group against any individual:

* * *
Article 1
No person, group of persons, or government may initiate force, threat of force, or fraud against any individual's self or property.

Article 2
Force may be morally and legally used only in self-defense against those who violate Article 1.

Article 3
No exceptions shall exist for Articles 1 and 2.

The Constitution of the Universe rests on six axioms:
1. Values exist only relative to life.

2. Whatever benefits a living organism is a value to that organism. Whatever harms a living organism is a disvalue to that organism.

3. The basic value against which all values are measured is the conscious individual.

4. Morals relate only to conscious individuals.

5. Immoral actions arise from individuals choosing to harm others through force, fraud, deception, coercion -- or from individuals choosing to usurp, attack, or destroy values earned by others.

6. Moral actions arise from individuals choosing to benefit others by competitively producing values for them.

Re: Using the "same" bitcoin on multiple computers
by

I was wondering the same thing. Re: if anything happened to me, I want my wife to be able to load my wallet on to her computer. She also has a wallet with some coins on her computer because I had her install the client and sent her some. So I was thinking on the client should be able to manage multiple wallets and have a procedure to import a wallet from something like a flash drive. It would give instructions on proper handling of the wallet on the original computer(u must delete it now and not try to use it).

When you say you can lose your bitcoins if used from two different computers, does that mean just running the client or actually sending the same bitcoin?

What happens if someone steals your computer with your wallet and you have a backup?
When you go to send all your backed up bitcoins to a new address before the thief can, what will happen?

A strict post threshold is a little ham-fisted, but it is a quick solution. Maybe there is a better formula that could be used for lifting restrictions. Such as days-as-a-member + posts.

I have spent more of my time interacting on irc and mostly just reading threads here for the last month and a half. I want to be thoughtful and helpful when replying to posts, but I guess this is prodding me to be more active here. I'll just have to be a little less thoughtful.   Smiley

so many of us would have liked to take the bitcoins off the hands of the panic sellers today at this great discount, but have been waiting most of the week for money to get into the system.

watch yourBitcoins Google spreadsheet template
by

I made a Google Spreadsheet that will import the latest Mt. Gox trade value and your Mt. Gox Balance at the click of a button. then it calculates the two to show you their current market value. I has been very fun to watch the numbers grow recently. I feel like a gerbal in an experiment because I click the 'update mtgox Last Sell Price' so often.   Smiley
Since it is a spreadsheet you can add your own numbers and calculations

I made a version as a public Template for everyone to use. if you go to Google Docs, File -> New -> From template...
Then search for 'yourBitcoins'

enjoy!

Re: bit-list: privately find local bitcoin traders

Maybe one of them will be succeed and that will be good for bitcoin. I encourage people to try them all out.
We are enthusiastic to see bitcoin be used by more people and see helping people close to each other trade in them as valuable. Avoiding having to send cash or a wiretransfer to someone far away is a good thing.
I know there are sites that identify people on the map who use bitcoin, but they expose the persons' personal information. Who knows if some government decides they don't want their citizens using bitcoin at sometime in the future. Do you really want to give them a way to easily lookup users' name and location?

bit-list: privately find local bitcoin traders
by
extracool
on 08/05/2011, 08:40:22 UTC
Hey, so I had a take on the whole finding and communicating with people around you that are interested in the same thing, in this case bitcoin trading, while maintaining your privacy. Maybe you don't want to publicly identify yourself as a bitcoin buyer or seller. http://bit-list.appspot.com, uses your twitter account to authenticate, but you can even keep that private from others on the site, by setting your nickname. To further protect yourself, once you are done with a conversation, you can delete the whole thing.
I just finished implementing private messaging and thought that was a good time to announce the site here.

There is a mailbox like thing you can create at any point on the map, I call these Drops. Anyone can leave a public message in the Drop. You and the sender are the only ones who can see a private message added to a Drop you created. You can permanently delete/burn your Drop at anytime. In the message of a Drop you create, enter in #hashtags to enable searching out by the hashtag. Bitcoin buyers enter #bitcoin-buyer. Bitcoin sellers enter #bitcoin-seller.

I would appreciate feedback, thanks.
